Think pumpkin, spicy browns, rich greens, and mustard shades. Take a look and see if you find a new favorite.

Whether you want to cover dark circles under your eyes, or you have ‘imperfections’ like age spots or broken capillaries, the concealer that you used when you were younger may not work so well for you now. You’ll want a concealer that is moisturizing and creamy, and that glides on well without sinking into fine lines. In this article, you will find the best concealer for mature skin.

The concealer you use will depend on what you want to cover, your skin type, and how much coverage you want. For example, you will want a thinner concealer that won’t cake around your eyes. If you are covering spots or broken veins on your chin or cheeks where your skin is less crepey, you can use something a little thicker.

The best concealer for mature skin – options

Let’s take a look at some of the best, most recommended concealers for mature skin, and why they could work for you.

Nars

The good thing about concealers is that, even if you choose a more expensive option, a little goes a long way. NARS’ creamy concealer is a perennial bestseller for a reason. It has a light-diffusing formula, and promises 16 hours of coverage. Reviewers say it goes on easily and doesn’t smudge or crease, making it one of the best under eye concealers for mature skin options as it won’t sink into fine lines.

How to apply eyeliner after 40

Let’s start with how to apply your eyeliner to get the best results before we move onto recommendations for the best eyeliner for older women.

Eyeliner Preparation

1. Prime

Prepare your eyes with an eye primer. This will create a more even and smooth base for your eye makeup and make sure your eye liner stays put. The Urban Decay eye primer (below) comes with a sponge applicator that makes it easy to put on. Reviewers say it makes your eye make-up last all day.

2. Eyeshadow

Choosing an Eyeliner

Let’s move onto the best eyeliner to choose before we start on the next steps. When you’re older, you want to ensure you choose an eyeliner that doesn’t settle into wrinkles or that doesn’t smudge if your eyes are becoming more hooded as you get older. Below, you’ll find some of the best choices if you’re looking for the best eyeliner for older women.

1. Type

When choosing the best eyeliner for women over 40, choose an eyeliner with a thin, soft point. A very thin line will define your eyes without making you look too heavily made up. You can always build a fine line up if you want a more dramatic look. Pencil eyeliners are popular, but tend to smudge and smear. If a pencil is your go-to eyeliner, opt for one that is long-lasting or smudge-proof.

Another alternative is to look for gel-based liners that will glide on smoothly and resist smudging.

2. Colour

Use soft colours to give your eyes depth and enhance your natural eye colour. Deep plum, grey and dark brown will define your eyes beautifully, in addition to shades of blacks, blues and greens. More on what color eyeliner to choose to go with your eye color later.

Drawing out your eyes

Have you chosen your favorite eyeliner from this list of recommendations for the best eyeliner for women? Let’s move onto how to apply it.

Step 1

Begin at the outer corner of your eye and move inward with a smooth, gliding motion. Do not go all the way to the inner corner, where the tear duct is located. Stop the line when your natural lashes stop, or just before.

Hint: Don’t extend the line beyond the outer corner. If you do, it can potentially draw attention to crow’s feet or make your eyes look droopy.

Step 2

If you feel the eyeliner is too strong, simply wipe gently across the line with the tip of your finger or cotton bud (Q-tip), or a clean eye shadow brush, to slightly smudge and soften the line.

Step 3: Bottom lashes

Starting again from the outer corner, line your bottom eyelids only halfway to place just a little colour along the lash line. Bottom eyeliner tends to smear more, so a little colour goes a long way. Hint: Finishing touch – Once you’ve lined your eye along the top and bottom, brush or smudge a little bit of eyeshadow over the lines. This touch of powder will help the liner stay in place. Eyeliner Fun If you want to be more adventurous, you can create a cat-like eyeliner by applying eye shadow to the outer corner of the eyes rather than using eyeliner. This creates a modern look with a soft effect.

Have you already tried a CC Cream? Lighter than a foundation, they’re more like a tinted moisturizer. They often include sun protection and anti-aging properties, making them particularly suitable for mature skin. In this article you’ll find out why you might want to use a CC Cream and discover the best cc cream for mature skin.

What is CC cream?

First, what exactly is a CC Cream? The ‘CC’ is CC Cream stands for Color Corrector. It’s used to even out discoloration or blemishes in the skin.

What’s the difference between CC cream and BB cream?

A BB Cream gives you light coverage and is more used for dry skin. It hydrates the skin while at the same time provide some coverage for blemishes. They often combine a primer, moisturizer, sun protecter and foundation in one cream. This good for women that don’t need (or want) a lot of coverage.

A CC Cream specializes in color correction. CC cream is the better choice when you have some acne, discolorations or more blemishes to cover. They often contain special ingredients that correct skin tone.

How are CC creams different from tinted moisturizers?

A tinted moisturizer is what the name says: a moisturizer with a bit of a tint. Although it may provide the skin with a light glow, it doesn’t cover any blemishes. CC creams are thicker and designed to cover spots and discolorations.

What’s the difference between a CC cream and foundation?

Foundation has the highest amount of coverage and often the biggest choice in colors. Some of them have skincare properties as well but most don’t. Many CC creams provide coverage but also include anti-aging ingredients in the cream. If you prefer to use just one cream rather than an a moisturizer plus foundation, a CC cream is a good choice.

Which cream offers the best coverage: foundation, BB or CC?

When it comes to coverage foundation offers the best coverage.

CC has medium coverage while BB offers the lightest coverage.

Why you might want a CC cream

There are 2 good reasons to wear a CC cream.

1. Make your skin look more flawless wth just one product

If you want your skin to look more flawless, but you don’t necessarily want to wear a foundation, then a CC Cream could be answer.

2. Provide the perfect base for your foundation

If you want your skin to look very smooth and don’t mind more makeup, you can add the CC cream as a first layer before applying your foundation. (You can check some of recommendations of foundation for mature skin here.)

how do i choose the best cc cream for mature skin?

CC Creams are designed to minimize imperfections by using colors at the opposite end of the color spectrum. Therefore, you will want to choose a CC Cream based on your skin tone and what you would like to disguise.

CC Creams can help to disguise imperfections caused by age, such as rosacea, broken veins, and brown age spots.

They can also help with preventing the signs of aging. Some of the CC creams for mature skin contain anti-aging properties such as retinol and hyaluronic acid.

Which CC cream is best for my skin tone?

If you have purple under-eye circles, look out for a peachy color.

If you have redness, look out for a CC Cream with green undertones.

Choose the right foundation, and it can make you look younger and fresher. However, foundation can also settle into fine lines and wrinkles and make you look older than you really are. That’s why it’s important to choose the best foundation for mature skin.

There are now entire foundation ranges designed for women over 40, 50, 60 and beyond. Make-up brands are constantly using groundbreaking technology to develop make up formulas which flatter older women and reduce the signs of aging.

What the best foundation for aging skin can do for you

These high-tech, age-friendly products are designed to fill in fine lines, moisturize, and give a flawless complexion by hiding imperfections and (best of all) to give the face the look of an instant lift.

If you have events or parties to attend this season, or you just want to look good on Zoom calls, you’ll definitely want a foundation which does all of that as well as staying put all night.

Foundation: A word of warning

Before giving you a rundown of the best foundations we’ve found for mature skin, here’s why it’s vital to find the right one.

As we age, there’s no getting around the fact that our skin is less smooth, and develops more texture.

A foundation which does not work with your skin tone can actually create a mask-like appearance which can make it very obvious that you are wearing makeup.

This can mean you end up looking older than you really area as your foundation will settle into lines, wrinkles and pores.

In this article, you will find recommendations for the best foundation to work well on mature skin, including the best drugstore foundations for aging skin.

Not only that, but we take a look at whether you need a different foundation in your 40s, 50s, and 60s and beyond.

Best foundations for mature skin

Out with glittery eye shadow, and in with skin smoothing makeup primers and eye serums.

Is there a difference between the foundation you need in your 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond?

At 40+ Style, you’ll find style tips which work no matter what age you are.

But, when it comes to makeup, there are certain considerations you need to bear in mind as you age.

And, what worked for you at 40 may not work for you at 50, 60, or 70.

Here is what to consider at each decade when choosing a foundation:

Best foundation for mature skin over 40

Our 40s tend to be when we really start to notice fine lines appearing.

That’s because the natural life cycle of our skin starts to slow down, and we produce less collagen.

If you haven’t already changed the foundation you used in your 20s and 30s, now will be the time.

A foundation which also features SPF will be a good day-to-day option to slow down your skin’s aging process.

Lancôme Absolue Replenishing Radiant Makeup comes with an SPF of 18 as well as rave reviews from women who say it covers up spider veins and sun damage without looking “cakey”.

Best foundation for aging skin over 50

In your 50s, the aging process which started for your skin in your 40s will continue.

But, you may find that the menopause also causes changes for your skin.

A decline in estrogen levels can make your skin feel dryer, so choose a foundation especially designed for dry skin.

A gel texture foundation like this one from Chantecaille will glide on rather than becoming clogged around dry areas of your face.

Best foundation for mature skin over 60

As you enter your 60s, 70s and beyond, you will notice the most noticeable difference is that your skin loses volume and becomes much thinner.

You will want to choose a foundation which moisturizes and which is specially designed for mature skin.

Best drugstore foundations

The foundations recommended above are all from some of the world’s most renowned beauty brands, and they come with fantastic reviews from women with mature skin.

While there’s no doubt they can be expensive, I also find that a little does go a long way.

However, many times, you may want to pick up a new foundation while you are doing the rest of your shopping.

Or you might want to make sure that you can choose a foundation with good coverage which is a wallet-friendly price.

1. No7 Lift & Luminate Triple Action Serum Foundation

I love the No7 brand from British beauty and pharmacy store Boots, and it’s fantastic to see it’s now more widely available.

Best foundation for large pores

As you age, the pores on your face can start to look bigger, so many women search for a foundation for large pores.

The problem is that some foundations can actually settle into your pores and draw attention to them rather than having the opposite effect.

It’s often best to use a primer under your foundation to give you a smooth base upon which to apply the rest of your makeup.

Revlon

Dori says: “I’ve used many foundations over the years, and perhaps oddly, settled on what is probably the least expensive product I tried, Revlon Colorstay normal/dry. I’ve used it over the past 10 years or so, in Buff. I am very fair and have rosacea. It hides the redness, and the big plus, no one ever thinks I wear foundation. —I should add, I am in my 60’s.”

One of my favorite places in the world is a nail salon! Yes, it sounds odd. But I absolutely love the array of nail polish bottles that greet you neatly lined up in a rainbow myriad. It truly takes you back to the days of opening a box of 64 crayons…However, with so many shades to choose from, it can be bewildering. This article features nail color ideas and the best nail colors to flatter your hands.

If you are over 40 you will have noticed the change in the variety of nail polish colors. Now nail fashion in itself is its own industry created by women of all ages being drawn to wearing the latest fashionable manicure.

Every woman should indulge in this inexpensive treat and enjoy the selection process especially since there are now glittery, shimmery, metallic even jewel-encrusted versions of your favorite color polish.

Nail trends are constantly changing and you don’t paint your nails just to match an outfit; they have become the fashion accessory of the ensemble. Wearers no longer have to stick within the boundaries of seasons; nail polish now is worn to enhance the tone of your skin as well as your beauty and nothing more.

What nail colors to use and trends to follow over 40

When it comes to caring and having fun with your nails, age sets no boundaries.

However, there are some important things to remember.

  • Pay attention to nailcare. You may like to consult this previous article on how to care for your nails.
  • Also consider carefully the color you choose. Think of it this way; choosing a nail color is like choosing a lipstick.
  • I recommend keeping your nails short and in a squarish oval shape – “squoval” – in order to keep your hands looking youthful.
  • I have to mention this, even though I have been known to do this, but wearing false acrylic nails with an old-fashion manicure really can make you look more outdated and older than you think or feel. It is classic but it is almost like having an old 1950’s VW in a society that only drives Audi’s.

Here are my top tips to following the latest nail trends

1. A youthful shade of red

How to choose the right nail color and avoid "Old Lady" hands | 40plusstyle.com

The right type of red is a youthful shade you can pick. Pay attention to the following:

  • Bright orange-red nails draw attention to your manicure rather than to your hands.
  • Burgundy, plum and even browns are versatile for day-night combinations.
  • Go for shades that are more orange based, rather than blue based. I can hear you saying – but how do I tell which is blue based and which is orange based? Put the two bottles together – you will see it immediately.

Irena (above) opts for a flattering orange-red and keeps her nails short.

2. Beware of the blues when choosing the best nail color

As you get older, your skin is more likely to be showing your bluish veins. I suggest avoiding pale or cool tones such as blues and greens or blue-based reds and plums. These will emphasize any veins that are visible.

3. Nude nail color: reliable neutrals

A nude polish has anti-aging power and every woman should have a go-to nude polish. Nudes, baby pinks and light whites will make stubby fingers elongated. My best advice for picking your staple colour is to pair it with your foundation colour.

If you have light skin, choose shades of white, champagne, nude or sand. If you have darker toned skin, choose shades of cocoa, cappuccino, taupe or coffee. Chocolate and shades of grayish-brown are youthful and trendy, but be wary of dark browns as they can be very harsh and unforgiving.

4. Good nail colors: Beware of the dark

As we age, brown spots appear on our fingers due to exposure to the sun’s UV rays, so it’s no wonder your hands are extra susceptible. Fall and winter season trends bring deep and dark browns, blacks and purples.

They look fabulous on short nails but they can emphasize brown undertones and your spots. Try a cranberry or burnt creamy plums, deep ambers or blood reds.

If you still have youthful looking hands I personally love Navy, or moody blues and greens. They are bold and will illuminate your skin in a beautiful way without the harshness of black.

5. Pink nail polish colors

There’s a pink for every outfit and occasion. If your hands are not your favorite feature, pick bright pinks. They will draw attention to your nail rather than your finger. For longer or slimmer fingers, I recommend light and soft shades of pink (especially baby pink).

6. Nail color ideas: shimmer shades

Like lipstick or eyeshadow shopping, it pays to avoid chunky glitter nail polish. However, that doesn’t mean you miss out on all the fun.

Try a touch of metallic or shimmer. I absolutely love the way metallic shades catch the light – it adds intrigue. If you are anything like me, where your work outfit consists of dark colors or a monotone palette, a little metallic nail polish will add a feminine touch to your structured look.

7. Nail polish colors to avoid

Yellow nail polish can make your hands look swallow and sickly and bring out the dryness and detail of your hands. If you still have youthful hands, you can wear bright yellow; otherwise I suggest you stick to glamorous gold.

Best nail varnish brands when choosing your nail colors

Now that you are thinking about the best nail varnish shades for you, how about the brands to choose? You don’t want to go to the trouble of painting your nails, only for the polish to chip or flake the next day. The brands below are recommended for their longevity.

1. butter LONDON

With shock-resistant polymer technology as well as bamboo extract to keep your nails in good condition, butter LONDON has great reviews from women who say the color doesn’t chip, fade or peel.

Make up is a tricky thing! It can take years off you, and make you look like a better version of yourself. Or, it can age you and make you look older. If you’re looking to revamp your make up bag, below you will find the best make up for older women to make you look great every day.

Do I need to wear make-up?

Of course not. I often go makeup less day-to-day. There will be days when you want to pop to the shop make-up free, and there will be days when you prefer to add some make up for a little more polish.

Why make up for older women is a balancing act

While make-up can make you look younger, it can also do the opposite. For instance, make-up can collect in fine lines and make them look more obvious. Powder can dry out your skin. Or, if you’ve had the same make-up for decades, the techniques and colors you use can age you.

See more things that can date you or make you look older.

What make up to choose

In order to ensure you get the effect you want – probably to look younger and healthier – make up choices must be made carefully when looking for the best make up for older women.

Below are the best options for more mature skin. Let me know in the comments at the bottom if I have missed any of your own make up essentials.

Mel (above) wears lovely, fresh pink shades which look perfect with her hair color.

1. Primer for your face

While you may think of foundation as, well, the foundation for your make-up, the key to a great, long-lasting, line-reducing look is actually primer.

A good primer is a little like taking a photo with a filter. It helps to fill fine lines and enlarged pores as well as improving the texture of your skin before you add your foundation.

2. Don’t forget primer for your eyes

As you age, skin becomes thinner, particularly the skin around your eyes. As eyelids become thinner, they can also develop an uneven color.

Adding a primer can disguise fine lines, even out color and make your eye shadow appear more vibrant as well as lasting longer throughout the day. It’s best to use a specially formulated eye primer which isn’t too heavy for this delicate area.

3. Eyebrow kit or gel

Many women have over plucked their eyebrows over the years, particularly because eyebrow trends come and go – and thinner eyebrows were in style in decades gone by.

Now, thicker brows are definitely on-trend, and can help to make you look younger. However, a combination of over plucking and eyebrows naturally becoming sparser as we age can make them thinner than you would ideally like.

Using an eyebrow gel can help to make your brows appear fuller, fill in gaps and frame your face. Choose a shade closest to your natural color so it doesn’t look too harsh against your skin coloring.

4. Foundation

As your skin becomes more mature, you will want to look for a foundation which provides a dewy, plumping effect without settling into fine lines.

5. Concealer

Next, concealer. As you get older, your skin becomes thinner, which means the darker blood vessels under your skin become more obvious, leading to dark circles under your eyes.

Look out for a concealer which covers circles and hydrates.

6. Cream blush

Using a powder blush can create dryness and make lines more obvious. For a more youthful look, opt for a cream blush which will give a more dewy finish.

7. Thickening mascara

Don’t necessarily go for black as this can be aging. A natural brown shade may be a better option depending on the natural color of your eyelashes. Also take a look at the best mascaras in stores now.

8. Natural eye shadow

Bright eye shadow can also be aging because of the connotations of 1980s blue eyeshadow, but also because it can obviously settle into creases. A safer, softer option is to choose flattering natural shades.

Eileen (above) chooses natural browns which make her eye color pop.

9. Lip liner

This is one to be careful with. A really obvious lip liner can be aging as this is a look which was on trend in the 80s.

However, the right lipliner can prevent your lipstick from bleeding into the fine lines around your lips. Choose a lipliner in the exact shade of your lipstick, or a colorless lipliner.

10. Creme lipstick

A very shiny lipstick can have an aging effect, and a matte lipstick can dry out your lips and settle into lines. So what’s the answer? A great option is a creme effect lipstick which will be flattering, long-lasting and moisturizing.

CHANEL ROGUE COCO Ultra Hydrating Lip Colour | 40plusstyle.com

11. Gel eyeliner

As we age, applying eyeliner can be trickier because an eye pencil can drag across your skin, while a liquid eyeliner can settle into creases. A gel eyeliner can give a smoother finish.

13. A great set of make-up brushes

You need the right tools to do a great job, so it’s definitely worth investing in a good set of make-up brushes and looking after them.

14. A make-up mirror

To ensure you apply your make up properly, a good mirror is vital.

15. Setting spray

While you will have used primer at the start of your make-up regime, if you want it to last a full day, it can be a good idea to spray on a fixing spray as your final step.

Where to keep your make-up

Just as with the clothes in your closet, you’ll want to make sure your make up is properly organized so you can easily find everything you need.

Make-up bag

One option is to choose a make-up bag large enough to fit all of your make-up brushes and tools in.

Another choice could be a small set of draws to fit on top of your dressing table.

I got such an amazing response and some wonderful tips on my article on pretty nails for women over 40, that I wanted to share some of the best suggestions on how to care for your own nails and do a manicure at home so you can give yourself a great, professional-looking manicure at home…

How important is looking after your nails and doing a manicure at home?

Are you someone who doesn’t mind what your nails look like? Or do you only feel well-groomed if your nails are at least neat and tidy, if not painted?

Overall, most 40+ women who discussed this in the comments and in the 40+ Style Facebook community felt that grooming gets more important as you get older.

Suzanne says: “I truly believe that the older you get, the more ‘well groomed’ you need to be to look your best,” while Heather adds: “I never use to care, but now that I’m older, all the little details are so important.”

I tend to agree.

So how should you look after your nails and do a manicure at home?

Not dressed as lamb | 40plusstyle.com

It’s all about taking care of your nails with proper care. I like to share some of my own tips and some wonderful suggestions from 40+ Style readers on how to do your own manicure at home.

The always superbly groomed Catherine from Not Dressed As Lamb feels that the secret to good nails, is to keep the cuticles healthy. Many of the tips below were shared by her.

How to strengthen nails before giving yourself a manicure at home

Before I get onto your manicure routine, if you feel you need to strengthen your nails, there are many things you can do to improve their condition.

Diet is super important, and getting plenty of varied nutrients can improve your nail health. To give them a helping hand along the way, you can also choose a nail cream especially designed to strengthen your nails. Use it regularly and your nails will be in the perfect condition for your manicure.

Manicure steps

Now that you have made sure your nails are strong, below are the steps to follow to give yourself a home manicure:

1. Rub in hand cream every time you wash your hands

Washing your hands regularly can dry out your skin. And, as we’re all washing our hands much more than usual given the current situation, I’m sure your hands may be feeling dryer than usual.

Keep a bottle of hand cream in your bathroom along with your handwash and be sure to rub in your hand lotion every time after you wash your hands.

If you get a lotion that you love and which smells lovely, then hand washing won’t seem like such a chore.

2. Nail treatment: Apply a good cuticle remover

Don’t cut your cuticles because this can leave your nails vulnerable to bacterial infection. Instead, apply a good cuticle remover – either liquid or paste, whichever is your preference.

3. How to do a manicure at home: Push your cuticles back

After you’ve applied cuticle remover, push them gently back with a wooden or plastic cuticle stick. Don’t use metal as you could damage your skin or your nail.

4. Tips for nails: Buff your nails with a 3-sided buffer

Now give your nails a good polish with a 3-sided buffer. That way you create a wonderfully smooth surface for your polish. Or, you can just leave them au naturel as this step will give them a natural shine.

I like Onsen’s Japanese nail buffer, which is simple to use and has instructions on the side! Simply file with the silver side, smooth with the colored side and then shine with the white side.

5. Nail care products: Rub in plenty of cuticle cream

Combining moisturizing benefits along with anti-fungal properties, cuticle cream is an essential for protecting your nail health.

6. How to get healthy nails: File your nails

Use a glass file to file your nails. File regularly rather than cutting with scissors or clippers. Give it a try! When you stop cutting your nails, you should see that their condition will improve enormously.

7. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS use a good base coat

Never paint your nails without applying a good base coat first. A base coat will create a barrier between your nails and the nail polish, protecting them and preventing your nails from peeling and becoming stained. This is particularly important if you like to wear a darker polish.

8. How to do a manicure: Mind the gap!

Time to choose your favorite color. When painting, don’t allow the polish to touch or seep into the cuticles. A tiny gap between the polish and your cuticles will look neater and will allow your nails to breathe.

Anna Sui Shimmery Nail Color | 40plusstyle.com

9. DIY manicure: Hold your breath

Giving your nails a perfectly neat finish is simply down to painting them on a flat surface, holding your breath (briefly) and lots of practice!

10. The best nail polish? If in doubt, go for neutrals

If you don’t have a lot of time, or a very steady hand, then forget about French manicures (too fiddly!) and choose a really neutral, almost skin-like color.

This will hide a multitude of sins and look very modern. Revlon’s Elegant is a perfect shade.

11. Fix your nails

The last thing you want is to touch anything with your nails before they are properly dry – as you’ll ruin all of your hard work.

You can use a nail polish spray to dry them more quickly. Or, another good tip is to plunge them into a bowl of very cold water.

Demert Nail Enamel Dryer | 40plusstyle.com

12. Use a cotton bud

If you do make any mistakes, you can simply use a cotton bud dipped in nail polish remover to remove excess polish. Or better still, a small, round, flat artist’s brush perfects the edges beautifully (Sam likes to use a nail polish remover pen, which is like a thick felt tip pen you can use around the edges of your nails to tidy things up a bit once your polish has dried. But, Catherine feels that the pens get too loaded with polish too quickly).

13. Apply a clear top coat

Apply your top coat to finish. And then another coat every other day to keep your polish from chipping.

14. And finally, remove

Remove the nail polish after 4-5 days maximum, and let the nails breathe at least overnight before painting again.

Buff them straight after removing the polish and apply the hand and cuticle cream again. Even if you don’t paint them a color, I’d recommend always keeping a clear base/strengthening coat on them to protect the nail from general bashes. This will stop them from splitting too!

If you’re already pretty confident about doing your own home manicure, and you would like a really professional finish, you could think about giving yourself a gel manicure at home.

You will need a special lamp to properly dry the gel onto your nails. I like the look of this starter kit although I have no experience using it. Plus, make sure you have an acetone-based remover at home when you do want to take the gel off.

Done well, your gel manicure should remain chip free for up to two weeks.

Unfortunately, as we age, it’s natural for our eyelashes to lose volume and pigment. That’s because, just like our hair, our eyelashes can become thinner and go gray.

But, don’t despair; a good mascara can work wonders.

If you’re looking for the best mascara for women over 40, you’ll find it here, including the best drugstore mascara, just in case you don’t want to invest too much in trying a new makeup product.

The benefits of a good mascara

Of course, you don’t have to wear makeup every day, but I do find that mascara is one of those transformative products that can make a huge difference.

Just a couple of swipes of mascara and a slick of lip balm or gloss can instantly help you to look more put together and give you a feeling of confidence as Amaris is showing in the image above.

What to consider when choosing a mascara – whether opting for a designer brand or the best drugstore mascara

Do you need more volume?

As we age, our eyelashes change. You can lose some eyelashes as well as color, so the mascara which was a favorite in your 30s may no longer work in the same way.

Sensitive or waterproof?

You may find that your eyes become more sensitive or that they water more as you get older, so a sensitive or waterproof mascara may suit you best.

Quick drying

Another good tip is to make sure that your mascara dries quickly so that you don’t end up blinking your mascara onto your eyelids.

The best drugstore mascara – top 10

While you may have a favorite mascara that you’ve been using for years, if you do want to try a new mascara, you might like to experiment with some of the drugstore mascaras here that are super affordable.

Here are some of the most recommended drugstore mascara choices for you.

1. The best drugstore mascara as defined by top ratings

L’oreal’s Voluminous mascara is consistently well-rated, with reviewers praising the formula for adding volume as well as being long-lasting.

Many women recommend that you use a primer under this one for maximum effect.

2. Best drugstore mascara for length and volume

As an all-rounder when considering the best drugstore mascara, I love the No7 brand. It adds a natural curl with the curved brush and had good staying power.

This has more of a natural effect than some other options, but you can always add one coat for during the day, then layer up for evening.

3. Best drugstore mascara for short lashes

If you do have short lashes, you may find that you get a more dramatic effect by using a primer underneath your mascara.

This option from L’oreal features a primer at one end and a mascara at the other, so you only have to purchase one product.

4. Long lash mascara

Are you looking for a mascara to add extra length? Have you discovered the Tetyana Naturals brand yet? It has very good reviews on Amazon, with women praising it for adding volume without looking clumpy.

5. Best mascara for long lashes

Another option to try if you have shorter lashes and want a natural formula is Ilia’s Limitless mascara which contains beeswax to condition.

6. Best maybelline mascara

Surely everyone has tried or has at least one Mabelline product in their make-up bag.

The Colossal mascara is a good choice for a night out as it’s designed to add nine times more volume than your natural lashes.

Let it dry if you want to add an extra coat so that it doesn’t clump.

7. Voluminous mascara

If you prefer to achieve a fanned out look with your mascara, this option from L’oreal could be a good option to try.

However, some reviewers say the formula can be drying, so you may wish to pair this one with a lash conditioner.

8. Great lash mascara

Maybelline’s Great Lash mascara is one of those iconic drugstore options that many of you will have tried.

If you want to enhance your lashes without adding color for a natural everyday look, you could try a clear mascara.

9. Best covergirl mascara

Another iconic brand that most women have tried at one time or another when searching for the best drugstore mascara is Covergirl.

If you haven’t given it a try since you were younger, you may want to give the new mascara formulas another shot.

The Super Sizer is a good option for adding impact for an evening make-up look. The brush is smaller than some other mascara wands, so you can get to smaller lashes.

10. Conditioning mascara

Most mascaras feature conditioning elements as well as adding color. If you are concerned about thinning lashes, you may want to give Rimmel’s Lash Accelerator a try.

It features a Propacil formula, which is usually used in shampoos for hair loss prevention.

Other Mascara recommendations

If you have a bit more to spend you can look at some of the top brands for mascara. Here are our recommendations for the top mascaras for women over 40.

1. Best lengthening mascara

An iconic mascara that is a favorite in my make-up bag. Goes on smoothly, separates lashes well for a natural look, and stays put all day.

A good choice if you have short lashes.

2. Best mascara for volume

Chanel’s volume mascara is another product which has won legions of fans. The formula expands so your lashes look thicker.

It doesn’t clump so you can also build up layers until you get the look you want.

3. Volume mascara

Another good option if you are searching for mascara to give you extra volume is Lancome’s Hypnose Drama formula.

The brush shape means that your brushes fan out to create a bigger impact.

4. Brown mascara

If you are particularly fair, you have blonde or gray hair, or you want a more natural look for daytime, you may want to consider wearing brown mascara during the day and then black for evening.

A good option for an everyday five-minute make-up look.

5. Best waterproof mascara

Many women choose a waterproof mascara, whether you are swimming or at the beach or not.

A waterproof mascara can have better staying power, whether you are worried about smudging, your eyes tend to water, or you have an emotional event such as a wedding to attend.

However, do bear in mind that waterproof mascaras are more likely to dry out your lashes than other types of mascara.

You could always invest in an eyelash conditioner if that is something you are concerned about.

Also, you will definitely need a decent make-up remover to make sure you remove all traces of your mascara.

6. Best mascara for sensitive eyes

Many of us find that our eyes get more sensitive as we age, or perhaps you are a contact lens wearer and want to make sure your mascara won’t cause irritation.

Clinique’s high impact mascara adds volume and length, but gives a relatively natural look that is more suited to day-to-day. It’s also safe for contact lens wearers and those of you with sensitive eyes.

7. Best smudge proof mascara

If you want to make sure that your mascara stays put all day, Estee Lauder’s double wear make-up is designed to last for 15 hours.

The formula is particularly good if you live somewhere particularly humid or you are going somewhere warm on vacation.

8. Best natural mascara

Just as we are more concerned about the ingredients in our food, many of us are delving more deeply into the ingredients in our beauty products.

If you are looking for a natural or organic formula, you could think about RMS’ volumizing mascara, which features organic plant waxes and is paraben-free.

It’s not as long-lasting as some of the other brands’ mascaras, but it does give a lovely natural look.

RMS Beauty Volumizing Mascara | 40plusstyle.com

9. Best curling mascara

Do you usually curl your lashes? You could, of course, invest in an eyelash curler. If you do curl your eyelashes, you will notice that you get a much more open-eyed look.

However, you don’t necessarily need to add a curler to your make-up kit. You could try a mascara especially designed to curl lashes while also adding color, length and volume.

If you do have lashes which are very straight, or which naturally have a downturn instead of curling upwards, Dior’s iconic Overcurl mascara is well reviewed.

Dior Diorshow Iconic Overcurl Mascara | 40plusstyle.com

10. Bottom lash mascara

Many women avoid putting mascara on their lower lashes for fear that it can transfer onto the skin under your eyes.

But, a special lower lash mascara can be easier to apply to the smaller, shorter lower lashes. Apply lower lash mascara first and then apply make-up to your upper lashes.

Clinique Bottom Lash Mascara | 40plusstyle.com

Clinique Bottom Lash Mascara

Mascara primer

Another good idea when looking to add volume to thinner lashes is to use a lash primer.

Just as you would use a primer under foundation to create a good base for the rest of your make-up, you can use a volumizing primer for your eyelashes to make them look thicker when you add your mascara.

This Lancome primer conditions as well as adding volume before you add your usual mascara over the top.

Lancôme CILS BOOSTER XL Super-Enhancing Mascara Base | 40plusstyle.com

Another good option could be YSL’s Flash Lash primer which dries clear on your lashes, ready to add your mascara.

Lash conditioner

If you want to look after your lashes in the same way as you look after your hair, have you thought about investing in a lash conditioner?

neuLASH’s serum features pumpkin seed extract and is designed to condition thinning lashes.

neuLash Lash Enhancing Serum Duo | 40plusstyle.com

Or you could try the lash conditioner from Revitalash, which reviewers say makes a difference to the look of your lashes within around two months.

False lashes

Of course, if you want to create a major impact for a party or event, you could always add false lashes rather than relying only on mascara.

Mac’s false lashes have good reviews for quality.

As the saying goes, less is more, and I definitely think that’s true as it applies to makeup. As we get older, wearing light, natural makeup applied in the right way can be much more flattering than a face full of layered, sculpted makeup.

Here’s how to create a beautiful, natural makeup look that’s fast and easy to apply. I call it my “no makeup” makeup look that’s perfect for a casual, everyday look.

Select a multipurpose makeup stick

One of my favorite ways to create this natural “no makeup” look is with a multipurpose makeup stick. As we age, our faces lose color and contrast, a makeup stick that gives you a sheer wash of color is a wonderful way to add a bit of natural color back into your complexion without looking overly made up.

A sheer wash of color recreates the warmth of younger skin.  It is a wonderful way to add a bit of natural color back into your complexion without looking overly made up.

These sticks add a soft wash of color back into your complexion without looking overly made up. And these sticks save time, money and space in your makeup bag because they can be applied to cheeks, lips, eyelids, or anywhere you want to add a bit of highlight to your face. And wow are they great for travel because a single stick can take the place of blush, bronzer, lip and eye color.

What to look for

Brands call them lots of different things so look for one of these names: “multiuse makeup stick”, “cheek and lip stain stick”, or “cheek and lip color sticks”. I like this one from Nars.

Look for a shade that’s deep enough to create a warm flush of color on your skin. Be forewarned, these sticks often look much darker in the tube than they will on your skin, so select a shade that’s deeper than you’d wear in a powder blush, I promise they won’t be too dark!

Start with sheer foundation and concealer

Apply a light base of foundation or tinted moisturizer (with an SPF so your skin is protected.) Apply concealer under your eyes, concentrating on the inner corners of your eyes to cover any darkness.

Apply concealer (with a brush) to cover any redness around your nose or chin. I use It Cosmetics tinted moisturizer with SPF 50 so I have a base of sun protection. I then use Bye Bye Undereye from IT Cosmetics. Add a light coat of mascara. I love It Cosmetics mascara. It really gets my lashes LONG!

How to apply makeup over 40 | 40plusstyle.com

Apply where the sun would illuminate your skin

How to apply flattering natural looking makeup over 40 | 40plusstyle.com

Create a warm glow by applying a quick stroke of color to parts of your face where the sun would naturally hit your skin when you’re out in the sun (your forhead, chin, cheeks)

These makeup sticks are a genius shortcut to create a wonderful “no makeup” makeup look for a casual day, or if you prefer a natural look, this can be your go-to makeup look.

Apply color to the apples of your cheeks

How to find the apples of your cheeks? Smile. Those rounded parts of your cheeks are the apples. That’s where you’ll apply your color.

Creating a no makeup look | 40plusstyle.com

Apply lightly to eyelids and lips.

Apply a light slick of color to your lips. If you want a deeper color, apply one light layer then use a blot with a tissue, then apply another layer on top. That creates a deeper layer of color that will stay on longer.

Then use your fingers to apply a bit of color to your eyelids. (Make sure to apply with your fingers, the warmth of your skin will help to soften the makeup stick so the color will be light and natural.)

And that’s it, an easy way to create a “no makeup” makeup look.

Here’s what I looked like before wearing just concealer, mascara, and tinted moisturizer and after using the multi makeup stick.

Mascara, applied correctly, can be an over 40 girls best friend. Mascara makes you look more well-rested and awake, doesn’t cost too much, and can give you an instant eye lift.

But as we age, applying mascara become more difficult for several reasons. Often, our near sight is diminished so it’s harder to apply, and any bags or loose skin around the eyes can get smudged with mascara.

Here are some tricks on how to apply mascara without smudging

Use a handheld magnification mirror

If you wear reading glasses, seeing well enough to put on mascara without your glasses gets really difficult. Buy a magnifying mirror for your bathroom or makeup vanity if you don’t already have one, and buy a smaller version that can go in your purse or makeup bag when you travel.

Apply under eye coverup last

In case you get any smudges below your eye, you can cover with your undereye concealer.

If you have oilier skin, a waterproof formula is less likely to create smudges if it gets in contact with oily skin

If you wear contacts or have sensitive eyes, waterproof mascara may irritate your eyes. (If you experience burning or itching, it’s a sign the mascara is irritating your eyes.) Choose a brand that says it’s ophthalmologist tested.

Don’t pump the wand of the mascara

That will dry out the mascara and make it clumpy and harder to apply.

Use a business card.

And, if your mascara is more than 6 months old, THROW IT OUT

Bacteria builds up in mascara, so play it safe and toss it. Tip: write the date you bought the mascara on the bottom of the tube with a sharpie. That way you’ll know it’s when it’s time to throw it away and buy a new tube.

Here are a few mascara brands that give you long lashes and don’t clump, plus some magnification mirrors we recommend.

Do you have any tips to prevent mascara smudges?

So we all know what BB Creams are, but what are CC and DD Creams?

Are they all the same? Do I need all three?

Let’s find out!

BB Creams

Revisiting BB Creams, short for “Blemish Balm” or “Beauty Balm”, these creams contain a mixture of moisturiser, foundation, sunblock and primer. They have the ability to make your skin appear smoother, even out your skin tone, improve the look of your skin and prevent your skin from ageing.

For women over 40, who are blessed with good skin or those who loathe makeup or heavy foundations, BB Creams are for you. The most concerning thing about BB Creams is whether it has an adequate amount of sun protection. Make sure you check when purchasing your BB Cream.

CC Creams

CC Cream is short for “Colour Correcting”. This type of cream addresses issues like redness and sallowness.

There is a subtle difference between a BB and a CC cream and it pays to be diligent in checking the ingredients and benefits to suit your needs. Most women feel that a BB Cream is more like a tinted foundation, creamy and moisturising. A CC Cream feels lightweight and fast absorbing.

Advanced formulations within CC Creams will contain pharmaceuticals for anti-ageing or pigmentations to provide a longer-term result.

For women over 40, who encounter redness, discolouration, pigmentation or scarring, CC creams are perfect. They include advanced formulations like light diffusing particles to instantly correct skin tone, as well as plenty of antioxidants. Make sure you check when purchasing your CC Cream that the ingredients suit your purpose, as well as its sun protection.

DD Creams

DD Cream stands for “Dynamic Do-All” or “Daily Defense” Cream. DD Creams have the same texture as a BB Cream but offer more SPF protection as well as a barrier to prevent moisture loss. It also includes the Colour Correcting particles from the CC Cream.

DD Creams are most suitable for mature women. They provide a medium coverage with a lightweight feel as well as giving you all your skincare needs. 2 creams I recommend are DERMADOCTOR’s DD Cream which has an SPF30 or  JULEP DD Cream with an SPF25.

At the moment DD Creams are still new and most companies have yet to release their creams, but stay tuned.

Some brands are even going an extra step to create ranges which allow the customer to customise their needs. For example, Make Up For Ever’s Step 1 Skin Equaliser System provides 10 formulas to combat every texture and tone that is of concern. With customisation come multiple tubes of products, a bulky makeup bag and longer routine though. This may suit some women but definitely not all.

What do you think?

CC Cream – Corrects the model’s skin tone and makes her look brighter or fairer.

BB Cream – Gives a nice warmth to the model’s skin tone.

Model’s Choice: Prefers the BB Cream feel and look but neither cover the pigmentation or dark circles well enough.

So my only advice when purchasing any skincare or makeup product is to ask yourself “What does my skin need?” and “What do I need from this product?” Take your time and look around and I’m sure you will find a product that’s perfect for you and your skin!

Have you experimented with any BB, CC or DD creams? What is your preference?

Have you heard of BB Creams? Want to know what it is and what all the hype is about?

The “BB” in BB Cream is short for “Blemish Balm” or “Beauty Balm.”

The formulation of a BB Cream contains a mixture of moisturizer, foundation, sunblock and primer. It has the ability to make your aging skin appear smoother, even out your skin tone, improve the look of your skin and prevent your skin from aging.

The hype around BB Creams comes from convenience. In this fast-paced world, using a single product rather than layering on multiple products makes it perfect for those on the go. For some women, BB Creams have completely replaced their regular foundation and, with the latest research technologies, some brands have added anti-aging, whitening or shimmer compounds to improve their products.

With BB Creams, a higher price-tag doesn’t always equate to the product being “better”. The key to applying BB cream is sparingly. Try a small amount dotted on the forehead, nose, chin, under-eyes and cheeks, and then blend.

When purchasing a BB Cream, you may be swamped by the range and diversity available. So it’s good to know what it is you want to achieve with your BB Cream and how to read the label.

For example, Asian brands that have BB Creams available tend to have more skincare ingredients and sun protection then its competitors. However, they will also contain whiteners or bleaching ingredients for dark spots or pigmentations and generally have a limited colour range.

These days there are many brands that offer everything you need, it’s just a matter of determining what is important for you and your skin!

My Top Recommendations

All skin types

ESTEE LAUDER Double Wear All Day Glow BB Moisture Makeup Broad Spectrum SPF 30

This is a fantastic long-wear BB Cream which feels almost like a light-weight foundation. Highly moisturizing and suitable for all skin types except very oily skin. It will give you a sheer coverage with the SPF protection you need.

POND’S Luminous Finish BB+ Cream

Providing you with a moderate, matte coverage for Normal to Combination skin types. It is also suitable for Sensitive and Acne prone skin. However, it only has SPF 15+.

3LAB Perfect BB Cream

3Lab BB Cream has used stem-cell technology in its formulation to firm, lift and rejuvenate the skin. This cream feels like a tinted moisturizer with all the added benefits but it comes with a price tag.

Kiehl’s Since 1851 Actively Correcting & Beautifying BB Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 50

With one of the highest SPF’s available, this cream provides all-day wear for all skin types. It especially corrects uneven skin tone and reduces the appearance of pores and fine lines.

STILA stay all day 10-in-1 HD Beauty Balm

This is the latest style of BB Cream – provides all natural ingredients, oil-free and can “reduce wrinkle depth up to 84%”. Catch is there is no SPF protection.

Personally, I feel this is more ideal as a Primer.

Oily Skin

‘BB Cream’ All-in-One Skin-Perfecting Beauty Balm Broad Spectrum SPF 21

For Oily, Sensitive or Combination skin, especially those with dark spots. The whitening ingredients will reduce visibility of your dark spots and is combined with the high sun protection.

Maybelline New York Dream Fresh BB Cream

Apart from the attractive price, this BB Cream is best for Oily skin. It evens blurs imperfections and enhances your skin, whilst giving you SPF30 and being available in a range of tones.

Dry Skin

L’Oreal Youth Code BB Cream Illuminator

This is best for Dry skin and those with wrinkles. It only comes in 2 shades and with SPF15.

Iman BB Cream

This BB Cream is fantastic for Dry skin and the best is that it has a large range of tones, even for tanned or dark toned women.

Revlon Photoready BB Cream

An overall cheap and good quality BB Cream for Normal to Dry skin types with SPF30.

Good luck finding the perfect BB cream for you. Let me know how you go and what your experience is!

Note from Sylvia: for a review of some BB creams that I have used check this article.

If you have a big concert or a fancy gala to attend, creating a Smokey eye can add a bit of sophisticated drama to your look. Perfecting the Smokey eye is not limited to make-up fiends and artists alike, but to anyone with the correct tools and a little know-how.

These easy sultry eye steps will show you how to create a smokey eye after 40. They can take you from day to evening in no time!

Creating a smokey eye day look

Start with a fresh and flawless base, making sure you have already concealed the eye area for best results.

How to create smokey eyes | 40plusstyle.com

1. Sweep an Opaque or Bone coloured Eyeshadow all over the entire lid. (Mac eyeshadow in Arena)

2. Apply a medium tone Eyeshadow to three quarters of the lid like MAKE UP FOR EVER Eyeshadow in #127 from the MIDNIGHT GLOW Palette

3. Using the same Eyeshadow, layer the colour by concentrating the colour in the crease area for more affect.

4. Line both your top and bottom lashes with an Eye Pencil, getting as close to the lash line. MAC Kohl Pencil in SMOULDER

5. Soften the look by adding a Darker Eyeshadow and smudging with a brush or Cotton bud/Q-tip. MAKE UP FOR EVER Eyeshadow in #04 from the MIDNIGHT GLOW Palette

6. Continue to do this until you have your desired Smokey look.

Creating a smokey eye evening Look

7. Apply a thick coat of mascara after curling your eyelashes and some eyeliner.

8. Add some natural false lashes.

9. Dab a white Eyeshadow, in matte or shimmer, into the corner of your eyes and under the brow bone.

10. Finally touch up your under eye concealer for a perfectly smooth and flawless look.

Bonus Tips

1. You can always play with colours for a Smokey look – try a plum purple, olive green, navy blues…

Palettes

2. You can even add a dash of shimmer to colours of your eyes in a variety of colours to create a variation.

3. To avoid having panda eyes, conceal with a full coverage concealer.

4. To avoid your Eyeshadow colour fading, use an eye primer before the first step. This will help the staying power of your Eyeshadow in the heat.

Summer has started and you are feeling the heat. Have you checked if you’re wearing enough SPF protection? Do you know if you have enough protection with just your foundation?

We all know about wearing sunscreen, but do we have enough in our daily makeup to combat those harmful UV rays?

Also check our update article on the best foundation for women with mature skin.

The most important thing to look out for when choosing a foundation is whether the foundation contains SPF protection. Most foundations do include SPF protection, although it may be very limited.

However, that doesn’t mean you will have to apply sunscreen on top or change your foundation. It just means that you need to apply an SPF Primer before applying your foundation.

When purchasing foundations with SPF and SPF Primers, you are better off investing in a trusted product, rather than wearing cheaper versions. It’s your skin after all!

Here are some of the best makeup products with SPF.
