Using a face roller feels good against your skin. But it can do much more than that. Face rollers have been found to improve blood flow, relieve tension and reduce puffiness. But which one should you use to suit your skin and take your skincare routine to the next level? Let’s look at face roller benefits and the best face rollers for your face…

What is a face roller?

You’ve probably seen them all over social media but let’s address the obvious first. What exactly is a facial roller? Facial rollers have their origins in ancient Chinese beauty routines when the elite used them to keep their skin beautiful. Apparently, if you roll on the right side first, it brings prosperity!

They’re little facial sized rollers that you roll on your skin to work in the same way a facial massage would.

Face roller benefits

So, now you know what they are, why should you use one? What are the benefits?

  1. Face rollers increase blood circulation. A study in 2018 found they increase blood circulation to the face while other research into facial massage has found benefits including reducing stress and tightening skin;
  2. Face rollers improve lymphatic flow and drainage;
  3. Theyimprove blood flow;
  4. reduce puffiness;
  5. reduce inflammation;
  6. cool and soothe the skin;
  7. provide relaxation, reduce stress;
  8. and help to distribute your skincare products more evenly.

Overall, I think the jury is still out on exactly how effective face rollers are. But, I think they’re definitely worth a try to see if you notice a difference. Many women who have tried them say they have improved the look of their skin. I’ll take you through some of the best reviewed choices below.

Best face rollers

Now that you’re thinking about which face roller might be best for your skin, let’s look at some of the best you could choose…

Types of face roller to choose

How to use a face roller?

Face roller benefits and the best face rollers to use in your daily routine | 40plusstyle.com

Have you chosen your favorite facial roller? The one you would like to add to your facial routine? Then what is the most effective way to use it?

  1. Apply a face oil, serum or moisturizer that will enable the roller to glide over your skin. I think using a facial oil would be a good choice. You’ll find some of the most recommended options in this article on the best face oils.
  2. Start from your neck and roll up. Always roll upwards – you don’t want to be helping gravity down.
  3. Roll from your jawline up to each ear.
  4. Roll from your eyebrows up over your forehead.
  5. For your eye area, you might want to switch to a smaller roller, if you have one. Roll outwards for a draining effect.
  6. If you’ve used your facial oil, you can finish off your routine by using your moisturizer.
  7. Wipe your facial roller. If you’re using a derma roller, you’ll want to sterilize it.

Are you already using a face roller? What is your favorite and best face roller to use?

Do you use a face oil? It may seem counterintuitive to use a face oil – because why would you want to put oil on your skin? But modern face oils actually have a raft of anti aging benefits to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and make your skin look dewy. Below you’ll find our recommendation for the best face oil for glowing skin to keep your skin youthful & healthy for longer.

Face oil benefits

Best facial oils for glowing skin - Face oil benefits | 40plusstyle.com

First, let’s look at some of the benefits of face oil, before looking at the most recommended face oils for women over 40.

1. They can reduce the appearance of wrinkles

Many face oils contain lots of anti-oxidant and active ingredients that can help to reduce the appearance of fine lines. Because they are so hydrating, they can also help to make your skin look plumper and less dry, so your wrinkles aren’t as noticeable.

2. They’re great for dry skin

Your skin can easily get dry because of sun, wind, adverse weather conditions, air conditioning, heating, genetics, and because skin naturally gets drier as we age. Adding a face oil for glowing skin to your skin care regime can help you with more effective moisturizing.

3. they’re also fantastic for oily skin

It may seem counterintuitive to use an oil for oily skin. But, using a face oil can actually make your skin less oily as it can help to replenish your skin’s natural oils, which can leave your oil levels more balance.

4. They protect your skin

Face oil essential creates a barrier, penetrating into your skin and trapping in moisture while keeping toxins and dirt out. If you live in a city where you are worried about pollutants, adding a facial oil to your day-to-day skincare can be a great way to protect your skin.

5. They can work as a make-up primer

A face oil can be effective at balancing areas of dryness so that your make-up will go on more evenly and won’t look patchy.

6. They can make your pores look smaller

As oils can grab any dirt and residue from your pores, they can help to make your pores look smaller.

7. They can calm down skin irritation

If your skin is easily irritated or you sometimes suffer from breakouts, choosing a facial oil can help to calm down your skin.

History of face oil

There’s a long history of use of facial oils. The Ancient Egyptians were said to have used a variety of plant-based oils on their face. And, if it’s good enough for Cleopatra…

Have you heard of LED face masks? Perhaps you have seen red glowed masked women coming by on Instagram or other social media? That’s certainly how I first got introduced to a red light LED face mask.

I was intrigued but not yet enough to do more research into it or acquire an LED face mask for myself. That all changed when I got approached by Currentbody who asked if I was interested to try out their LED face mask.

That led me to do some research on the topic. I’m certainly always interested in non-invasive treatments that help keep my skin healthier for longer. I’m not a big fan of a lot of makeup, so keeping my skin in top condition (so that I don’t need much) is one of my top priorities.

What is an LED face mask?

You may be familiar with a regular mask that’s either a cream that you apply to your face or a liquid sheet that you put on top of your face.

This mask is quite different.

Rather than something to cover your face, it’s a device that you put on your face. The purpose is the same: to get more radiant and even skin.

With an LED mask you do that though the benefits of red light (633Mm) and Near Infra-Red Light (830nm).

Infrared helps skin to heal quicker and stimulates the creation of new healthy skin cells | 40plusstyle.com

What is the benefit of red light to your skin?

In short, red light therapy can rejuvenate the skin. It improves complexion and creates a more glowing and healthier looking skin.

Red Light stimulates the production of new collagen, calms redness and creates an even skin tone.

What is the benefit of infrared light to the skin?

Infrared helps skin to heal quicker and stimulates the creation of new healthy skin cells.

Both red light and infrared together work below the skin’s surface to stimulate the natural rejuvenation process, creating a complexion that is visibly glowing and noticeably healthier looking.

How exactly does the technology of an LED face mask work?

Here is how Currentbody explains the science behind the LED face mask:

“As we age, our skin gets blocked and red LED light feeds your skin and ‘unblocks the pipes’.

“Infra-red, the other technology in the device works by stimulating the ‘wound healing cells’ in the skin – causing new, fresh skin to form.”

“Together, they work in harmony to stimulate the natural processes in the body, creating newer, fresher-looking skin.”

Unpacking the Currentbody Led Face mask

The mask is delivered in a beautiful black and white box.

It comes with a storage bag, charger and several converters for different regions.

As I was very unfamiliar with this kind of mask I liked how soft it feels to the touch. The mask is very flexible, so you can just wrap it around your face.

CurrentBody Skin LED Light Therapy Mask | 40plusstyle.com

First, you need to charge it for a few hours.

After that is done, you can just wrap it around your face and tighten it with the strap on the back.

You still carry part of the charger with you but it’s not very cumbersome, so you can just walk around with the mask and go about your usual activities.

LED Light Therapy Mask Review | 40plusstyle.com

How I’ve used the Currentbody Face mask

Although many women use the mask while doing other things, I prefer to use it as a relaxing opportunity and keep my eyes closed.

Once the mask is charged, you can use it multiple times, and I keep it on my bed side table. Whenever, I like to have a break or when I feel like it in the morning I can put on the mask.

I put the mask on my face, close my eyes, and either meditate for a bit or listen to an Audio book.

The mask is automatically set to 10 min and it automatically switches off after that time, which ensures that it’s never left on too long.

What does it feel like to have the mask on?

The mask feels like a warm glow on your face. The light doesn’t get hot, so I find it very relaxing and soothing. It has easily become part of my weekly routine.

Currentbody recommends using the mask for 3-5 times per week for 10 minutes a day on clean skin.

LED Light Therapy Mask Review | 40plusstyle.com

What kind of results can you expect from the Currentbody LED face mask?

Currentbody mentions that you can expect a more nourished, healthy skin that is visibly glowing and is clinically proven to reduce wrinkles by 35% in just 4 weeks.

I can’t confirm if that is true, as I haven’t used the mask for long enough. I’m also using it together with other facial products so it would be hard to isolate results.

So should you start using an LED mask?

From my research and my own experience there seem to be few if any downsides using it. And most articles and research seem to agree that there are clear benefits.

According to Currentbody, A-Listers like Carey Muligan, Kaley Cuoco, Kristin Davis and Renée Zellweger have already started using it. You definitely see Currentbody face masks come by regularly on Instagram.

I’ve certainly felt that my skin looks more radiant and I’m interested to see the long-term effects of using this mask.

Since it’s so easy and quick to use (it can become your excuse to relax or meditate for at least for 10 minutes per day!) I see only upsides from using this mask.

In my opinion, healthy and radiant skin is a great attribute as you get older and should be a priority for self care. Of course, good skincare is essential as is protecting your skin from the sun. If red and infrared can help stimulate collagen and even out skin tone in addition to that, I’m all for it.

This is an FDA approved device that you can use long-term and can be a good investment for your skin.

Want to try it at a discount?

Currentbody has been kind enough to extend a discount code to 40+style readers. Just use the code CB40PLUS and get 15% off ALL LED Devices. This is the mask I’m wearing. You may also want to consider the mask AND neck kit. The neck is often overlooked but it’s an area where age can show up the most.

What do you think? Have you used an LED mask? Would you consider it?

While you may religiously massage cream into your face morning and night and use the best foundation for mature skin, do you look after your neck in the same way? Along with other parts of your body like your hands and your knees, the skin on your neck can make you look older, even if your face is relatively youthful. Take a look at the best neck creams below for a firmer looking neck.

Why does the skin on your neck seem to age so quickly?

As the skin on your neck is thinner and more delicate than on other parts of your face and body, it can show signs of aging more rapidly. Plus it tends to be drier so it can develop a ‘crepe-y’ texture and can easily get sunburned, causing more signs of aging. Making sure you are moisturizing your neck as well as your face can help.

Why do you need a specific neck cream?

Anything you put on your face will work well for your neck too. But, as your neck has fewer oil glands, it may benefit from a specific, extra moisturizing cream designed for the skin on your neck.

What defines a fragrance that women aged 40+ feel comfortable wearing? Well, read on for the 10 best summer perfumes as chosen by perfume enthusiast and blogger Claire Vukcevic, as well as some of the newest summer fragrances you may want to try this year.

While it’s true that women can (and should) feel free to wear any perfume they want at any age, perhaps it is fair to say that, at my age, I am looking for something a little bit more sophisticated and complex than the perfumes I wore in my twenties.

My 10 favorite summer perfumes

The perfumes I like to wear all have something to say about the woman I have become – sophisticated, complex, mature, and confident in my own taste. I am not afraid to wear bold, abstract florals such as Joy de Patou or Chanel No. 5 – I feel I inhabit their skin as comfortably as my own.

But for summer, lighter, fresher fragrances. Citruses, herbs, figs, green leaves, and gentle musks  work really well to cut through the heat and leave me feeling elegant and clean.

Here are my recommendations for the all-time best summer perfumes for 40+ women. They provide the summer freshness we are craving, but not at the cost of the sophistication I think we’ve earned.

I’ve divided these summer fragrances up into classics, florals, citruses, and some newer options for you.

bestclassicperfumes | 40plusstyle.com

1. Chanel No. 5 Eau Premiere

A beautifully sheer, crisp take on the enduring classic that is CHANEL N°5 Eeu Première Spray is perfect for anyone who adores the original but who finds it too rich and too bombastic for use in the summer heat.  Actually, to be perfectly honest, I love Eau Premiere even more than the original. To me, it smells like a glass of lemony champagne poured over powdered rose, jasmine, and sandalwood.

If the original N°5 is a luxurious cashmere, Eau Premiere is a gossamer-thin silk. Just the ticket for a lunch out with girlfriends on a hot day.

2. Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue

Light Blue by Dolce & Gabbana consistently comes in at the top of the bestseller lists in the United States – and with very good reason: it is hard to beat in the summer refresher stakes. Featuring a sparkling green apple note and a translucent amber base, Light Blue is a pleasure to wear in the heat. Its fruit notes are sheer rather than syrupy, so the overall effect is crisp and bright – like biting into an ice-cold Granny Smith.

Best of all, Light Blue never overpowers with its sillage, but gently wafts a cloud of scent wherever you walk.

3. Chanel No. 19 Poudré

N°19 Poudré is a phenomenally successful update on that most classic of green florals, N°19. Although women have adored N°19 for generations, it can be rather harsh and strong in the heat. N°19 Poudré is entirely a softer, more delicate affair and a popular choice for women who want that ethereal green crispness of N°19 without the bitter galbanum and leather of the original.

I love the cold, powdery softness of N°19 Poudré at any time of the year, but I admit that it comes into its own in the summer when I need a shot of talc-like freshness after my night-time shower. It knocks even Prada’s Infusion d’Iris off its perch, it’s that good.

4. Acqua Universalis Forte by Maison Francis Kurkdijan

A pricey but beautiful citrus-white floral cologne that lasts all day long and feels as elegant on the skin as a Hermes silk scarf. Acqua Universalis Forte pairs sparkling citrus top notes with a heart of creamy white florals and a base of powdery white musk.

This is the more concentrated version of the original Acqua Universalis, so it lasts a respectable six hours rather than just three. I love this fragrance because it smells like your-skin-but-better and people close to you will think you just smell amazing without even realizing that you’re wearing perfume. Uplifting, clean, and radiant – it’s everything I want in a summer perfume and then some.

5. Dior Diorella

Reformulation has lightened Diorella, so it is no longer the original creation of its famous creator, Edmond Roudnitska. But having said that, it’s still pretty fantastic, and comes into its own on a hot day out with the family.

Diorella is essentially a light, green floral chypre with a touch of overripe peach or melon to provide sensuality, and an interesting note of basil leaf (which smells almost like mint) to supply that bitter, herbaceous element that makes it a chypre. A famous perfume critic, Chandler Burr, described Diorella as smelling like “fur rubbed with toothpaste”, which strikes me as an apt description – there is something flesh-like and alive underneath the freshness.

It’s in the same citrus-fruit-moss family as Eau Sauvage (which is more strictly masculine) and Chanel’s Cristalle (which is colder), so if you like those, do give Diorella a try. It has that certain French je-ne-sais-quoi about it that would make it an excellent choice for the chic, but Bohemian woman.

6. Chanel Misia

Released in May 2015, this is the newest addition to Chanel’s ultra exclusive line only available in Chanel stores (“Les Exclusifs de Chanel”), and it has been a roaring success with women into slightly retro florals. With its soft, sugary violets, powdery iris, and subtle rose, Misia smells exactly like a very expensive Chanel lipstick. I never guessed that that would be my thing, but I’ve fallen for it, and hard.

If you love florals and don’t want to stop wearing them in summer, then this is a great choice because it is soft, but not insubstantial. It has a luxurious texture halfway between powder and creamy wax. One or two spritzes in the heat will have you smelling amazing without suffocating others.

7. Annick Goutal Ninfeo Mio

Wearing Annick Goutal’s Ninfeo Mio is like taking a walk through an Italian garden when everything is in bloom. First, your nose is hit by an explosion of lemons and green leaves, which feel like a hundred different shades of green have been shoe-horned into the opening notes. Tomato leaf is in there somewhere too, reminding me of snapping ripe tomatoes off the vine at my grandmother’s place, and later smelling the poisonous, dark green stems on my hands – an utterly thrilling and evocative smell.

Later, it relaxes into a green, woody fig, with that warm milk aspect that fig sap is known for. But it never loses that green, woody freshness of a snapped tomato stem. If natural green, lemony figs sound good to you, then run, don’t walk to get yourself a bottle. You won’t regret it.

9. Diptyque Philosykos

Philosykos was my first serious fragrance ever, bought in a tiny perfume shop in Rome, and I think my hands trembled a bit when I handed over my credit card (that was back in the days when I wouldn’t have dreamed of spending more than $40 on a single bottle of perfume).

But from first sniff, Philosykos was the joy of summer in a bottle for me – the vivid, green fig leaf, paired with the milky sap of the fruit itself just made me feel instantly happy. It still does. In fact, I sometimes spray it on in winter, to bring a little bit of summer back into my cold, dark house. But Philosykos truly comes alive under the heat of a summer sun, because the heat of the sun, combined with the heat of your skin, bring out all the warm, coconutty, milky, figgy, sappy, green, salty, and woody aspects of this wonderful scent.

I always think of Philosykos as being a casual sort of scent – the kind of laid-back, feel-good fragrance you wear with jeans and sneakers you could happily wear on a day out to the beach with your family, or to a cook-out with your closest friends. It has that sort of affability about it.

8. Creed Jardin d’Amalfi

The best and most popular summer fragrances for 40+ women | 40plusstyle.com

Eye-wateringly expensive, but if you can afford it, one of the best summer fragrances ever made. The top notes of mandarin oranges and lemons are so juicy and natural that they make your mouth water. But here you smell the whole citrus grove, not just the fruit, meaning you smell the woodiness of the tree, the bitter rind of the fruit, the pulp inside the fruit, and the green neroli. Enchanting!

With Jardin d’Amalfi, the perfumer was trying to create the feeling of a morning walk through a citrus grove on the Amalfi coast, but this perfume is actually far more refined and complex than that would suggest. A shy, watery pink rose soon peeps out from behind the citrus, and it is a beautiful note that is closer to green apple peel than to the lush, winey roses of dark rose scents. The vivid top and heart notes are supported by a salty, fresh white musk in the dry down. It’s truly a pleasure from top to bottom.

10. L’Eau d’Hiver by Les Editions de Parfums Frederic Malle

Pay no attention to the name – L’Eau d’Hiver may mean Winter Water, but it’s a scent that is actually perfect for summer. Designed by the great Jean-Claude Ellena, who is known for his transparent, naturalistic style, L’Eau d’Hiver is a delicate white musk wrapped around the baby-breath floral note of heliotrope, neroli, and a dry, powdery iris. The heliotrope, in particular, is beautiful, adding as it does a soft note of blanched almonds. There is a drop of honey later on to sweeten things, but the perfume never loses its translucence.

Some say it’s an homage to the great Apres L’Ondee by Guerlain, and I’d agree there’s a similarity in feel – both perfumes give you a feeling of walking through a field at dawn, surrounded by the smell of chilly morning air, the dew on the grass, and the just-opening flowers. Personally, I prefer L’Eau d’Hiver because it feels slightly more stream-lined and modern. Soft, dreamy, ethereal….wear L’Eau d’Hiver and fancy yourself a modern-day Ophelia.

more summer perfumes to choose from

You’ve taken a look at Claire’s top 10 picks. Now, here are a few bonus summer fragrances for you, which have all been released fairly recently…

1. YSL blouse

The word “blouse” can be thought of as a bit of an old fashioned way to refer to your top or shirt. However, the scent of YSL’s blouse is definitely modern. It’s fresh and floral, but with a bit of pepperiness to give it depth. Plus, it is really long-lasting, so you only need to use a small amount.

2. chloé Atelier des Fleurs Lavanda

You can use this one on it’s own, or with some of the other Chloe Atelier des Fleurs scents to create your own unique fragrance. Lavanda was inspired by perfumer Quentin Bisch’s memories of his mother walking from the heat of the garden into the shade of the house with a spray of lavender in her arms.

The lavender isn’t overpowering in this fragrance. Instead, you get a fresh, green, soapy kind of smell which is perfect for summer.

3. Replica beach walk

Who doesn’t love a walk on the beach? Even if you’re not able to get there in person, you can still evoke memories of days at the seaside with Maison Margiela’s Replica Beach Walk.

It has top notes of bergamot, pink pepper and neroli oil, with a middle note of coconut mile (providing a nod to the scent of sunscreen) and base notes of musk, cedarwood and benzoin for depty. This definitely seems to be one that is a bit like Marmite however. Reviewers either absolutely love it or say it didn’t word with their body chemistry at all.

4. Queens and Monsters

I love the fact that actress Michelle Pfeiffer, who is now into her seventh decade, has released her own fragrance line. She has previously spoken about wearing different fragrances to get into the mindset of her characters. But her perfume line Henry Rose is definitely very personal to her.

Queens & Monsters features floral tones but also sandalwood and vanilla. It’s a sensual scent that reviewers say they always get complimented on when they wear it.

5. Philosophy Pure Grace Summer Moments

I’d be interested in knowing which perfumes you turn to in summer, and which, if any, of the perfumes on my list you’re not familiar with but are intrigued enough about to get a sample.

I’m sure you’re washing your hands more than ever right now. But, ironically, washing hands more can actually make them drier as you strip the protective layer of oils from your skin. In this article you will find the best handcream to use no matter how dry or chapped your hands are.

The hands are often one of the first places to start to show age, as they’re always exposed to the elements. So, finding a great hand cream, and using it regularly, is important.

In this article, you’ll find the best handcream to use, whether you have dry or chapped hands, or you are simply looking for an easily-absorbed hand cream to use each time your wash.

If you find that your hands aren’t just dry, but they are very chapped and cracked, you will need to heal them rather than simply moisurizing.

This salve from Gehwol is one of the best handcream choices for really sore hands, and for feet if you also suffer from cracked heels.

6. Best dry hands lotion for easy absorption

When you are washing your hands a lot, and then applying a hand cream, you usually want to get back to what you were doing straight away, which can be tricky if your hand cream takes ages to soak in.

Fresh’s Seaberry Nourishing Cream soaks in really easily for me, without oiliness.

9. Best hand balm from a cult brand

Have your tried Burt’s Bees yet? It’s one of my favorite beauty brands. Plus there’s a very romantic story behind the brand!

One day, Burt pulled over in his yellow pick-up when he saw his future love Roxanne hitchhiking. She started making candles with the leftover bees wax from his hives, before realizing it could be put to good use in beauty and care products.

The rest is history. Burt’s Bees handwax is one of its most iconic products. As you can imagine, it features beeswax among the ingredients. A good size to keep in your handbag for moisturizing on-the-go.

If there was ever a time when we all need a little self care, this is it! If you can’t get to the spa right now, you can still take a little “me time,” even if it’s just for a few minutes. Below you will find 14 ideas to pamper yourself at home which should give your mood a boost.

You can take one of these ideas, or create a little spa package for yourself and do several at once. For instance, you could definitely do #13 at the same time as #7.

What are you doing to make sure you take care of yourself in mind and body right now? Let me know in the comments at the end.

1. Before you start to pamper yourself – Set the mood

First things first. You can’t possibly feel relaxed if the mood isn’t right. Turn a little corner of your home into your own spa by playing some calming music and creating a relaxing scent with a scented candle or essential oils.

Use a scent that holds good memories for you, or which you associate with a trip to a spa. For me, the smell of lemongrass transports me back to spa visits on vacation in Bali and Cambodia.

I really like the look of this aromatherapy and diffuser set (below) which comes with a range of essential oils, so you can choose one to suit your mood.

2. Dress the part for self-pampering

When you go to a spa, you are usually given a nice robe to wear, so pop on your best robe or dressing gown before you start your home spa treatment!

3. Deep condition your hair with a hair mask

I’m sure you probably use at least the odd face mask, but how about a hair mask? How many times do you give your hair a treat?

Just like skin, our hair goes through changes as we age and can get naturally more dry and brittle, so a good hair mask can make a huge difference to your hair’s texture.

4. Face mask

There’s just something very soothing about lying down with a face mask on and letting it infuse moisture into your skin as a way to pamper yourself.

As we are unable to travel right now, I really like the idea of this face mask from Bella & Bear, with tropical scents of mango and pineapple. You could always close your eyes and dream of a tropical island.

5. Give yourself a manicure (or a pedicure)

Do you usually go to a nail spa to have your nails done, or do you do them yourself at home? Either way, you’ll be looking at keeping your nails neat yourself right now.

If you don’t already have a decent one, a manicure set with everything you need to trim your nails, push your cuticles back and buff would be handy.

Then, you can paint your own nails with your favorite color varnish.

6. Hand mask

With all of us being much more aware of our hand hygiene, I’m sure there are plenty of you with hands that need a little tender care after so much washing or use of alcohol-based sanitizer.

These collagen-infused hand masks (below) are easy to use. You just pop your hands in the gloves for 20 minutes and wait until your hands are beautifully moisturized.

7. Give yourself smooth feet

Your feet are likely to be getting a bit of a break at the moment as we aren’t wearing heels to the office or to head out to dinner.

So, it could be the perfect time to give this oft-neglected part of your body a pamper. This treatment from Patchology (below) smooths calluses and removes rough skin.

The kit comes with special socks that you squeeze the treatment into, before wearing for 60-90 minutes, so you can always do #13 or #14 while you’re waiting.

8. Soak in a bubble bath

Are you a bath or shower kind of gal usually? Even if you usually take a shower, a bath can be incredibly relaxing. Light a candle, listen to some music and pour in some soothing bubbles.

The scent of the Lalicious Sugar Coconut bubble bath (below) is gorgeous, and it leaves your skin beautifully soft.

9. Exfoliate

Exfoliating removes the layer of dead skin cells, leaving healthier, fresher looking skin below. But how many of us usually find the time for regular exfoliation?

This Himalayan salt scrub (below) features lychee oil which gives it a delicate scent, as well as collagen, which is renowned for repairing tired skin. Great for both face and body.

10. Soothing eye treatment

Many of us suffer from puffy eyes and dark circles, particularly as we get older, or if we are feeling stressed and having trouble sleeping.

Regular face masks are generally not suitable for the delicate skin under your eyes, but you can still give your eyes a treat by choosing a mask especially designed for this area.

For an extra refreshing feel, pop them in the fridge before you use them.

11. A new pair of pajamas

12. Curl up with a good book (or listen to an audiobook)

How do you like to relax? If you love getting lost in a great book, you could combine your spa treatment with your reading time.

We can’t stop the aging process but we can use products that keep our skin looking great for longer.

I have been using Retinol for quite a while (in combination with other products).

Today let’s answer the question: what is retinol and how can it help your skin. I will also be rounding up the best retinol cream for your skin.

Then we’ll take a look at what the difference is between retinol and AHAs, and which could be best for you.

Using both AHAs and then retinol in your skincare regime may be the best way forward for better looking skin that stay younger for longer. Read on to find out why.

What is retinol?

Firstly, exactly what is retinol?

I’m assuming you’ve heard of it, your friends may have recommended it to you and you’ve probably heard it mentioned on skincare adverts.

But are you sure about what retinol is and what it does?

Patti, pictured above, is a big fan. You can read her beauty interview here.

Over the counter retinol

Retinol is just an alternative name for Vitamin A. It is a retinoid. Retinoids are available commercially in two forms, namely:

(a) powerful, prescription-grade formulas based on Tretinoin (a more powerful form of Vitamin A than Retinol) sold under such names as Retin-A, Tretinoin, Avage, Differin, Tazorac, Retin-A Micro, and Renova, and;

(b) over-the-counter formulas called Retinol that you can buy at the drugstore without a prescription.

Originally developed to fight acne, remove dead skin cells, and clear out pores, scientists soon realized that retinoids were extremely effective at fighting the signs of ageing.

Retinol products: Advantages and disadvantages

Pros

  • Retinoids such as Retinol are super effective at reducing lines, smoothing out skin texture, and regularizing skin tone.
  • RX-Retinoids (i.e., prescription grade retinoids) have had FDA approval for 40 years now, which means that clinical studies have been carried out that prove that they do reduce wrinkles (no other skincare ingredient can claim this).
  • Retinol is a skin-communicating ingredient, i.e., it “tells” skin to make younger, healthier skin cells.
  • Retinols fade brown sun and age spots.

Cons

  • You need a doctor’s prescription to get a hold of the most powerful forms of retinoids, such as Retin-A, Trentinoin, Tazorac, Retin-A Micro, and Renova.
  • Initial use and over-use (more than a pea-sized amount at first) can result in red, itching, flaking skin.
  • Retinoids such as Retinol are not suitable for people with sensitive skin or rosacea.
  • Retinols must be used in conjunction with sunscreen protection because prolonged retinol use results in a lower UV barrier.

Retinol benefits: How can Retinol help your skin?

Retinol works by promoting rapid skin cell turnover and revealing new skin beneath.

They also thicken the skin over long periods of use and slow the breakdown of collagen in our skin, the protein in our skin responsible for elasticity (and the first thing to break down when ageing).

Thick, unwrinkled skin equals younger-looking skin. The great news is that it’s never too late to start a Retinol regime!

As Dr. Ranella Hirsch, M.D., said in an interview, “We have beautiful, profound data that shows if you use [retinoids] for 20 years, you’re going to look a lot better than someone who doesn’t.”

Retinol for skin

Keep in mind the following:

  • Prescription-grade retinoids (Tretinoin) are 100 times more powerful than drugstore Retinol creams – but you need a doctor’s prescription to get them.
  • It takes 6-8 weeks to see a difference in your skin using RX-retinoids, and 6-8 months using over-the-counter Retinols – but over time, they have the same effect.
  • Seek out the most powerful and pure form of Retinol you can find in your drugstore products (rather than the far less powerful derivatives known as pro-retinols – these may be called retinyl palmitate, retinyl acetate, and retinyl linoleate on the back of the box).
  • Build up your tolerance to retinoids gradually and work through any initial flaking or redness – a Retinol regime is a long-term commitment rather than a short-term fix.
  • Use sunscreen and SPF creams (minimum 25 SPF) while using Retinols or retinoids.

The benefit of using a serum is that serums tend to contain a higher concentration of active ingredients because they don’t contain the heavier ingredients of a face cream. It’s best to use a face serum first and then a regular moisturizer.

Using retinol with AHAs

Of course, retinol doesn’t have to be all that you use to counter the signs of ageing and sun damage.

Here is a rundown on what AHAs and BHAs are, where they fit into your retinol regime, and when to use them.

The difference between retinol and AHAs

Now that I’ve looked at retinol and the advantages for your skin, I’m going to turn the attention to AHAs.

What exactly is the difference between retinol and AHAs?

Which one is best suited to you? Or, is it best to use both?

Retinol comes from Vitamin A and was originally used to treat acne, but when patients started reporting it also improved the appearance of fine lines and skin tone, it started to be used as a skin cream too. It promotes cell turnover and boosts collagen.

AHAs on the other hand are Alpha Hydroxic Acids and can be either natural or synthetic. Many include glycolic acid, which comes from sugar cane, or lactic acid, which is milk related.

They provide a chemical exfoliation, allowing the removal of dead skin cells and revealing smoother skin.

If you have sensitive skin, begin with a low concentration. As with retinol, make sure you use sunscreen when you are using AHAs.

What exactly are AHAs and BHAs?

AHAs and BHAs are two forms of the active compounds known as Hydroxy Acids which basically act to dissolve the “glue” that holds together your old skin cells and thus forcing them to turn over more rapidly.

They are highly effective at brightening the skin, improving acne, reducing discoloration, and reducing the look of fine lines and wrinkles.

AHAs and BHAs are both forms of chemical exfoliation (as opposed to scrubbing, which is manual exfoliation). Using AHAs and BHAs clears the way for your other anti-ageing creams to be more effective, because they slough away the old skin cells.

AHAs, or alpha hydroxy acids, are derived from plant, milk, and fruit sugars. You may sometimes see them called one of the following: glycolic, lactic, citric, or mandelic acids. They operate at the top skin cell level.

BHAs, or beta hydroxy acids, are man-made acids. They may also be called any one of the following: salicylic acid, benzoic acid or buteric acid. They operate at below skin level and can penetrate grease and oil.

Poly-hydroxy acids (less common) combine some man-made and some naturally-derived AHAs and BHAs in one product, so you get a host of treatment benefits at once.

Which do I need – an AHA or a BHA?

Use AHAs if:

  • You have dry skin (AHAs are humectants – they attract moisture to the skin)
  • Your main concern is sun damaged skin, sun spots, fine lines, or general dullness of tone
  • You don’t have particularly sensitive skin, or rosacea

Use BHAs if:

  • You have oily, acne-prone skin
  • You need to get gunk out of your pores
  • You have sensitive skin or rosacea

Of course, you can always combine AHAs and BHAs (or opt for a poly-hydroxy acid) if you have a combination of skincare needs to address – just be sure to introduce one at a time and to vary the doses to see how much your skin can take.

Since both AHAs and BHAs expose new skin cells, remember to wear sunscreen when using them!

Where do they fit in my skincare regime?

Acid toning should be done directly after cleansing your face thoroughly.

AHAs and BHAs usually come in the form of a liquid, or pads that are already infused with the liquid, so swipe it gently over all areas of your face and neck.

Follow up with a spritz of moisturizing facial toner to get the PH level of your skin back to normal levels, and then your face treatment if using one (such as a Retinol), a serum, and finally finish by applying a day or night cream (or oil).

You can also buy AHAs and BHAs in the form of moisturizing creams and serums, providing a sort of two-in-one benefit (exfoliation and treatment/moisturizing), and these can be used in the place of your regular serum, or day or night cream.

Gentle forms of acid toners can be used twice a day, but stronger forms should be used twice or three times a week at max (check the bottle to be sure).

What should I use? A retinol cream or cream with AHAs?

Although they are similar, they also have separate benefits.

Both promote rapid skin cell turnover and revealing new skin beneath. An aha acts more like a chemical peel, while a retinol encourages your skin to create new cells and boosts collagen production

Opinions vary whether you need both but if you want to try and use both, dermatologists generally recommend starting gradually when using either as, while they do complement each other, they can lead to irritation, particularly if you have sensitive skin.

Start with one and after a few weeks, add the other one to your skincare regime.

I would choose a retinol cream you can use daily and complement this with an AHA that you either use daily, but at the opposite end of the day, or as a weekly exfoliant.

A good way to use both is to use Retinol one night, then a AHA product the next night.

I’m combining my retinol cream with a vitamin C product

For my skin I feel that the retinol already provides enough regeneration. Instead I have opted to add a vitamin C product in the morning: CE Ferulic.

Ferulic acid provides protection from UV rays and prevents damage to the skin and premature aging. It also helps to build collagen and replenish lipids to keep your skin firm, smooth and youthful-looking.

If you want to know more check out my review of CE Ferulic.

As 50+ woman, it’s important to me to protect my skin and avoid rapid aging. One of the tools I use to accomplish that is the use of the serum Skinceuticals CE Ferulic.  Here is my CE Ferulic review.

What is Skinceuticals CE Ferulic?

CE Ferulic is the anti-aging serum from the Skinceuticals skincare range.

Skinceuticals C E Ferulic is an anti-aging serum with an antioxidant combination that (according to the brand) provides 8 times the skin’s natural photoaging protection.

C E Ferulic contains ferulic acid, that neutralizes free radicals, builds collagen, and provides improved antioxidant protection.

Packiging and application

It comes in a small 15 or 30 ml container with a drop dispenser on top. Skinceuticals advises to use 5 drops per application which I find to be on the small side as I don’t feel 5 drops fully cover all areas of my face and neck.

The serum is easy to apply. You get one drop from the dispenser and apply directly to face. I have felt no irritation and the serum is easily absorbed by the skin.

Use and results

I have used CE Ferulic every day for 2 months now. I apply it to the skin of my face and neck each morning directly followed by Skinceuticals Ultimate UV Defense (I use SPF 30 for every day use and use the sport 50 SPF version for outdoor activities like tennis).

I must say I am very pleased with the results.

My skin feels soft, nourished and hydrated. The combination of using a serum (for preventing skin damaging and its anti-aging effects) and a sun blocker (to prevent further damage) has proven to work very well for my skin. Both the serum and suncblocker and serum are not oily at all and leaves my skin hydrated and fully protected.

I used an anti-aging cream from Clinique before but that really felt too heavy for my skin. This combination of 2 products seems light, yet provides enough hydration for my skin and is very effective in protecting it.

I have now also started to use retinol. Check out what retinol is and how it can help your skin.

Conclusion

I like the combination of using a serum and a sunblock.

Living in a sunny climate I feel that skin protection is essential and these 2 products together seem to do the job effectively.

The only thing I did not like about the serum is its smell. Fortunately, this is compensated by the Ultimate UV defense which has a very neutral smell.

Overall, the effects of CE Ferulic and Ultimate UV Defense has been spectacular. My skin is smoother than ever, almost entirely free of blemishes, and well hydrated.

If you live in the northern hemisphere, summertime is almost here.

Time to be active outdoors and enjoy the longer, sunny days. And since you’ll be spending more time in the sun, it’s also time to think about how to select the best face sunscreen for mature skin.

Sunscreen can help the skin in a variety of ways, especially:

  1. It decreases the development of skin cancer.
  2. It helps prevent facial spots and skin discolorations.
  3. It helps to reduce the appearance of facial veins and blotchiness.
  4. It slows down the development of wrinkled or premature aging skin.

There’s so much information (and misinformation about sunscreen), we thought we’d put together a list of answers to many questions people have about sunscreen. These tips will help you select the right sunscreen for mature skin.

the best sunscreen for women over 40, how to select the one that's right for you | 40plussstyle.com

1. Make sunscreen a daily habit

Sunscreen protects your skin from photoaging. That’s all those wrinkles, mottled texture, and sun spots caused by sun exposure. And most importantly, sunscreen protects your skin from skin cancer.

So protect your face every day because sun exposure is cumulative. Five minutes here, ten minutes there takes a toll on your skin. Make daily sunscreen a habit, like brushing your teeth.

One of the easiest ways to get daily sunscreen coverage is in your makeup. Look for a makeup or tinted moisturizer that has an SPF of 15 or higher. It’s an easy way to make sure you’re always protected.

I swear by It Cosmetics Your Skin but Better tinted CC cream. It has an SPF of 50, but still looks and feels light and sheer.

It Cosmetics Your Skin but Better tinted CC cream | 40plusstyle.com

2. Even if you work indoors, you still need it.

Think you don’t need sunscreen because you’re working indoors? Think again.

Because although you’re indoors now, you probably walk outside to catch your bus, run errands, get the mail, or get in the car. Those few minutes add up to sun damage as the years tick by.

3. Windows don’t protect you from all damaging sun rays

I was shocked to learn that glass only blocks UVB rays, but UVA rays penetrate right through windows. And did you know that only the front windshields of cars are treated for UVA protection? The side windows and rear windows on cars aren’t treated for UVA rays.

That’s why you might notice more freckles and sun exposure on the driver’s side of your face and hands.

So wear sunscreen every day, and don’t forget to apply to your hands, arms, neck, and chest too, especially if you’re driving or riding in a car.

4. Learning to read the label is the key to buying the right brand of sunscreen

Look for sunscreen with these key features:

1. SPF

  • SPF 15 will keep you protected from harmful rays for 150 minutes. Suitable for when you are outdoors, walking the dog or at an outdoor café.
  • SPF 30 will keep you protected from harmful rays for 300 minutes. Suitable for when you are in the sun for longer periods of time, such as sunbathing or playing sport.
  • Please note that the SPF rating only indicates your protection from the UVB rays.

2. Broad-Spectrum

These protect against both UVA and UVB rays.

3. Check that the product label includes some of these sunscreen ingredients

  • Oxybenzone
  • Octyl Salicylate
  • Avobenzone
  • Titanium Dioxide
  • Zinc Oxide

Look for a sunscreen labeled “broad spectrum”. That  means the sunscreen blocks out both UVA and UVB rays with an SPF of 30 or higher.

5. Find one that suits your skin and that you REALLY like

That might sound simplistic, but if you don’t like the scent, texture, or something else about your sunscreen, you won’t apply it. And a sunscreen that’s left in the back of your medicine cabinet isn’t helping protect your skin. So try a few brands and types until you find one that you actually don’t mind applying.

One of my favorites is the Sunforgettable brush on sunscreen with SPF50.

Sunforgettable brush on sunscreen with SPF50 | 40plusstyle.com

I keep it in my purse and brush on my face, neck and even the back of my hands. It goes on invisible and the brush makes it easy to apply anywhere, even without a mirror.

6. Dark skinned women need sunscreen too

Yes, if you have a deeper complexion, you won’t show sun damage as quickly as someone who’s fairer complected but you are not immune to the damage and potential for skin cancer. In fact, skin cancer tends to be more deadly for darker skinned people.

7. Apply 20 minutes before sun exposure

Don’t wait until you are outdoors to apply your sunscreen, apply at least 20 minutes before heading outside.

8. If you have sensitive skin, choose a mineral sunscreen

A mineral, or physical, sunscreen uses ingredients like zinc oxide to sit on top of your skin and deflect the sun’s rays.

A mineral sunscreen tends to be more gentle and won’t cause a breakout or allergic reaction. If you get red bumps or breakout after applying sunscreen, switch to a mineral sunscreen instead, especially on your face.

Try Le Roche Posay’s Anthelios Sunscreen fluid.

Le Roche Posay's Anthelios Sunscreen | 40plusstyle.com

It goes on easily, not heavy or goopy, and the bottle comes in a convenient size that’s easy to fit in a small purse or carryon bag. (Experiment, you might need a mineral sunscreen for your face, but can use a chemical sunscreen on your body.)

9. When applying a Sunscreen, consider the following:

  • Fair-skinned and redheaded people should use at least SPF 30+ and higher.
  • Sunscreen should be applied at least 15 to 30 minutes before going outside and reapplied every two hours after.
  • For swimming, remember no sunscreen is waterproof. However, there are water-resistance sunscreens on the market, which last 40 or 80 minutes. You still need to reapply regularly.
  • Don’t forget that a cloudy day isn’t a day off for sunscreen. You can just as easily get sunburnt on a cloudy day, especially if you’re in the water.

10. Wear a sun hat

If you are going to be outdoors, one of the easiest ways to guard against sun damage is to cover up.

wear a sunhat | 40plusstyle.com

Rachel Parcell large brim sunhat

Wear a sunhat that covers your face, shoulders, and chest.

For more tips also check our guidelines on how to wear a hat.

The best way to not get sun damage is to not get any sun on your face in the first place. Choose a packable sun hat that you can fit in a purse, bag, or backpack in case you get caught outside in the sun, and stash one in the back of your car too.

It’s never too late to take care of your skin!

To recap here are the products you will need:

  1. It Cosmetics Your Skin but Better tinted CC cream.
  2. Sunforgettable brush on sunscreen with SPF50.
  3. Le Roche Posay’s Anthelios Sunscreen fluid
  4. A sun hat

There are two main reasons why it makes sense to learn how to wear perfume discreetly.

First of all, some people experience perfumes as chemical irritants, causing them to have allergy-like symptoms such as nausea, headaches, or worse. Second of all, it is simply rude to douse yourself in perfume when you know you are going to be in close proximity with other people.

In general, as with everything else in life, it pays to be considerate of the needs of other people in your environment.

Here are some tips:

1. Wear less: Most of us learned that the correct way to wear perfume was to spray all our pulse points – both wrists, the back of the ears, and perhaps even the collar bone. For heavy perfumes, this is too much. Cut down on the amount of perfume going on by spraying once to your left wrist, gently pressing your right wrist against it, and then using your wrists to dab behind your ears. This cuts the amount of scent by 75%.

 2. Wear it in odd places: Try one spray of scent on the small of your back (if you can reach!) or behind your knees. This will allow gentle wafts of scent to reach your own nose during the day, but is unlikely to bother the noses of your co-workers or sensitive family members.

3. Walk-through method: For extremely potent fragrances, like one of my favorites, Clinique Aromatics Elixir, the trick is to spray it into the air in front of you, wait a second, and then walk through the remaining mist. This ensures that the scent is diluted and cannot then overpower you. Any other method for spraying Aromatics Elixir is a declaration of chemical warfare.

4. Wear Pure Parfums: Pure perfumes – the most concentrated forms of perfumes (containing 30% or more concentrated perfume oils) – wear very close to the skin and are the format most suited to allowing you to enjoy your own scent but not inflict it on others around you. Extraits are expensive – around 6 times more expensive than eaux de parfums. But if you really enjoy a scent, do try to track down a sample of the pure perfume form – they are luxurious and above all, discreet.

5. Choose Light, Inoffensive Perfumes: Even perfume fanatics like me recognize the importance of choosing light, inoffensive scents to wear in enclosed areas like an open plan office environment. Think ahead and choose something very light. My suggestions would be: Chanel 31 Rue Cambon, Prada Infusion D’Iris, Guerlain Apres L’Ondee, Bulgari Omnia Crystalline, Donna Karan Cashmere Mist, or Kenzo Parfum d’Ete.

6. Go Solid: Perfume solids are a very discreet way to wear fragrance – far lighter than applying sprays of liquid, because you control exactly how much goes on. Try Diptyque or Lush – these brands make wonderful solid perfumes and won’t break the bank either.

 7. Don’t Wear It: Don’t even think of wearing perfume in small, enclosed spaces like planes, trains, and automobiles – be considerate of your fellow passengers. You might be enjoying that heavy application of Angel you just put on in the duty free, but people four rows down from you might be suffering in silence. It’s a big no no.

Do continue to enjoy your perfume! Nobody is saying otherwise. Here are my recommendations for summer. But just be conscious of your environment and pay other people the same consideration you would wish for yourself. A golden rule for life in general!

Do you enjoy other people’s perfume or does it irritate you?

This is an article from Dr Christopher Ng on the Spectra VRM III Laser Treatment combined with Omnilux LED Phototherapy.

What is a Spectra VRM III Laser Treatment?

Spectra VRM III is a CE and FDA approved non-ablative laser used in the treatment of many aesthetic conditions. Its advantages of being non-ablative means that it delivers the benefits of much more aggressive procedures
  • without the discomfort and downtime
  • patients return to their normal lives immediately after treatment
  • improved patient satisfaction

When would you need the spectra laser treatment?

This treatment is recommended for people who have:
  • Inflammatory Acne
  • Enlarged Pores
  • Fine Wrinkles
  • Oily Skin
  • Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH)
  • Pigmented lesions
  • Melasma (soft laser peel + laser toning)
  • Unwanted tatoos (black, blue, brown, red, tan, purple, orange)

Advantages of Spectra VRM III Laser Treatment

  • This Spectra laser treatment avoids prolonged downtime and PIH (post inflammatory hyperpigmentation) – common with AHA / TCA chemical peels and ablative CO2 lasers.
  • It can also be used in combination with Vit C iontophoresis, LED phototherapy, microdermabrasion, RF, IPL or fractional laser therapy for better outcomes

Mode of Action

Spectra mode
  • photothermal stimulation of the epidermis and dermis
  • gently heats the microfine carbon particles in the SpectraLotion™ and exfoliates the outermost layer of the skin
Q-switched mode
  • photomechanical destruction of the microfine carbon particles in the SpectraLotion™ along with removal of outermost layer of dead skin
  • skin tone and texture are improved
  • cells associated (fibroblasts, mast cells, macrophages) with skin rejuvenation are stimulated resulting in collagen remodelling

Spectra Laser Treatment Procedure (for enlarged pores, acne scars, active acne, fine wrinkles)

  • Face is washed and cleaned
  • Topical anaesthetic  cream is applied (20mins to take effect)
  • SpectraLotion™ containing fine carbon particles is applied thinly and evenly onto  the face
  • Fine carbon particles penetrate into the pores and acne scars
  • 1st laser pass in Spectra mode penetrates deep into the dermis which has a photothermal effect, stimulates skin cell regeneration and exfoliates the outermost layer of skin (stratum corneum)
  • 2nd pass in Q-switched mode causes explosion of the fine carbon particles which has a photomechanical effect, exfoliates the outermost layer of skin (stratum corneum),  shrinks pores, reduces sebum production to reduce acne, stimulates collagen remodelling, penetrates deep into dermis fracturing melanin that causes uneven pigmentation and stimulates natural phagocytosis processes to remove the unwanted colouration. All resulting in cleaner younger looking skin.

Spectra Laser Treatment Procedure (for pigmentation and tattoo removal)

  • Face is washed and cleaned
  • Topical anaesthetic  cream is applied (20mins to take effect)
  • The laser energy is focused directly onto the pigment or tattoo
  • The pigment is fractioned and broken down into tiny particles by the laser energy without damaging the surrounding skin allowing cells in your body to naturally digest and dispose of the tiny pigment or ink particles

2) Post Treatment Omnilux LED Phototherapy

Omnilux LED phototherapy (lights-only) is an FDA approved procedure used to enhance and improve skin treatments (after Botox®, fillers, facial peels, microdermabrasion, lasers and IPL therapy).
Advantages
  • It  reduces side effects and speeds up the regeneration time.
  • Painless
  • You will have LED Revive phototherapy at 633nm (red light) for 20 minutes
  • stimulates fibroblast
  • faster and more efficient collagen synthesis
  • stimulates regeneration and wound healing

Post Treatment Skin Care

  • Use Quick Recovery Lotion to reduce redness and downtime
  • At least SPF 30 UVA + UVB Sunblock to reduce post laser pigmentation
  • Post Treatment Mask at night for added radiance and moisture
  • Facial wash, Vit C serum, Rejuvenation cream & Anti-pigment cream

Treatment Interval

  • 3 weekly
  • Complete treatment package of 5 sessions
  • Maintenance 1x session  every 3 months

Possible Complications (when energy levels are too high)

  • Temporary redness  – subsides within a few hours
  • Burns – reduced if you adhere to post treatment regime
  • Scaring (excessive dermal damage) – much less with non-ablative lasers
  • Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (temporary for 3-4 months) (avoid the sun, use sunblock, anti-pigment cream, more common in darker skin types)
  • Hypopigmentation (temporary or permanent) – more common in darker skin types
  • Blistering (excessive epidermal thermal damage) – reduce with cooling ice to protect epidermis
  • Dry skin – reduced if you adhere to post treatment regime
  • Skin allergy (occasionally in tattoo removal, reaction to fragmented tattoo pigments, topical anti-histamine cream)

Have you noticed something different about me? No? Well, look closer because a few months ago I received some brand new front teeth.

My teeth had been bothering me for a while. It’s one of the parts of my body I’m least happy with. Here is what is wrong with them:

  • There is a big gap between the upper and lower teeth
  • They are too big for my mouth
  • They are not straight
  • They are not white
  • They are very sensitive
  • On top of that my front teeth are fake due to an accident in my teens
  • The black of the crowns is clearly visible when I smile

The dentists

Over the years I have been to many dentists in 5 different countries to see if I could solve any of these issues.

The most logical option would be braces of course, but time and time again I was advised that it was not possible for my teeth as there was just not enough space in my mouth. That would need to be created by surgery.

The oral surgeon

So I ended up consulting with an oral surgeon who recommended I had surgery as eventually my teeth would start to crack; there was too much pressure on my back molars. The procedure would take a lot of time and involve 3 (!) operations. What could be the risks of these procedure, I asked. Well, you could die, he said only half in gest. I decided against it.

Whitening

Whitening my too visible portruding teeth was not an option either as I have 2 crowns for my front teeth due to a childhood accident. If I bleeched the other teeth, my front teeth would still be yellow and stand out more, which would look awful.

Invisalign

Then I found out about Invisalign through blogging. That sounded interesting. Perhaps that could solve my issues? Invisalign is a proprietary method of orthodontic treatment which uses a series of clear, removable teeth aligners used as an alternative to traditional metal dental braces. The method is less intrusive, is barely visible and required no surgery.

I consulted a local dentist, had photos taken etc, and was advised that yes, Invisalign may be able to solve some of the issues, but it would be very difficult. Since I already had sensitive teeth it may aggravate the issue even more. It would also be lengthy process (perhaps even 3 years) and final results would not be dramatic. It all seemed too much risk and effort. So I decided against that too.

The crowns

What I could do though was change my crowns. They had been in my mouth for more than 25 years and although still healthy, they really were not looking all that good. I would also be able to whiten my teeth and the crowns would be thinner which would make my front teeth stand out less. I would also get rid of the black borders that were clearly visible. Again I got mixed recommendations. Some dentists thought this would be easy to do, others saw problems and told me I needed a root canal.

So what to do? Did I really need to do it? There was really nothing wrong with the crowns per se. I would mainly be doing it for cosmetic reasons. Was it really worth all the hassle and money? In the end I decided that it was, as I had been complaining about this issue for years. I always thought that ‘it wasn’t worth all the hassle, but if you keep coming back to an issue that annoys you every day, then maybe it just is.

The procedure

In the end I ended up with a dentist that made the most sense to me. He gave me a clear cost estimate of the worst case scenario (where I needed a new pole and a root canal treatment) and a best case scenario plan, which he considered more likely.

I would first need to whiten my teeth to determine how white they would go. I used the recommended Whiter Image take-home whitening system, which was pretty straightforward to use. First, the dentist creates a mould of your teeth which you then fill up with the fluid and hold on your teeth for 45 min to an hour each day. My molar teeth did become very sensitive with this treatment, so I mainly used it for the front teeth that you could clearly see.

When I was happy with the color of my teeth (they couldn’t really get any whiter) the old crowns were removed. Fortunately everything underneath looked ok, so the best case scenario could be applied and the whole procedure was very straight forward and I got them replaced in 3 sessions. Although unpleasant (as dentist visits always are) he got the job done quickly and efficiently.

So there you go: my new teeth!

newcrowns

In the end I’m very happy I had it done. Although my teeth will never be perfect, they are looking much better now and I can smile with more confidence! Please note that I had this procedure done before my holiday so all the photos of the last few months included my new teeth.

How to find a good dentist and the right procedure for you?

My experience with dentists is that you get a different opinion from each one. I have seen quite a few over the last 10 years in various countries and they all give different advice. Often they have advised me to do something and as a result I ended up with (worse and) more sensitive teeth. My advice is to shop around when you want something major done and get various opinions. Then use your own judgement to determine what is right for you. Believe me, the specialists are not always right and no-one knows your body and sensitivities as well as you do!

How do you look after your teeth?

How about you? Have you had issues with your teeth after 40 and how do you look after them? It would be great to hear about your experiences with procedures as well.

Last week I was invited to the launch of Beaute Pacifique products in Singapore.

Beaute Pacifque is a Danish brand that specialiszes in producing advanced cosmoceuticals, i.e. cosmetics products with considerable dermatological effects.

Skin analysis

The company actually started off with the production of advanced medical electronic equipment for skin diagnostics.

This scanner allows you to see the structure of your skin from the inside. The scanner takes inside pictures of your skin, which allows you to see the overall condition of your skin.

You can see how thick your skin is, how much collegen is still left and how much sun damage you have sustained.

Have a look at the picture below:

Skin scan results

At 20 the fibers are typically intact. There is a lot of red and yellow indicating the presence of collagen.

At 30 you can see that the skin is slightly aged and degenerated.

At 40 you can see further aging and degeneration. More dark spots appear which indicate sun damage and there is less collagen.

At 50 you see that the fiber is strongly degenerated.

My skin scan

skin test - beaute pacifiqueThe scanner and one of their main physicians from Denmark was actually there, so I was keen to give it a go.

The process is very simple.

A small scanner just brushes over your skin and takes a picture that is downloaded to the computer.

Unfortunately for me the results were not so good.

My skin had already aged significantly, my skin was very thin and collagen was almost nowhere to be found. Not good!

It did not come as a big surprise as I have known for quite a while that my skin is quite thin and very prone to wrinkles.

What I don’t quite understand though, is why I’m aging so rapidly.

I eat well, sleep well, do exercise, manage my stress levels, have never smoked and am vigilant with sunscreen protection and staying out of the sun.

It may just be bad genes, but that discussion will need to wait for another time..

What can Beaute Pacifique do to help the skin?

Question for now: Is there anything that I can do about it?

According to Beaute Pacifique, quite a lot.

Creme metamorphique and creme Paradoxe can transport active ingredients to the entire depth of the skin which allows the creams to repair sun damage and restore collagen in the skin.

Those are big claims, but my information kit comes with several research studies that show significant improvements after applying the creams.

As you can imagine, I’m a bit sceptical.

I have been using good creams for the last few years and yet my skin results were this bad. But I am happy to put it all to the test.

I will use the products for the coming 3 months and will then do another scan to see if my skin has improved.

Which products are going to do the magic?

The creams I will be using are:

Vitamin A anti-wrinkle booster: this cream provides the skin with three forms of vitamin A to rebuild the collagen fibers structures, and help the skin become reinforced and rejuvenated.

According to Beaute Pacifque it is currently the most potent anti-age product currently on the consumer market. Benefits include: reduced wrinkles and prevention of the formation of pimples and scars.

Creme Paradoxe beaute pacifiqueCreme Paradoxe: this unique cream contains both Resveratrol and Preocyanidin, which have proven to protect the skin’s DNA.

It reboots your skin each morning, restores the skin’s integrity and defies aging and sun damage. The cream also provides the skin with three forms of vitamin A esters, which, when combined with the Beaute Pacifique vitamin A cream, will improve the inner structure of the skin.

Let’s put it to the test!

The people from Beaute Pacifique all seem very confident that their creams can reverse a lot of the damage done to your skin. I sure hope they are correct!

I will do the skin test again in 3 months and will let you know of the results. If it works, they will have found themselves a new brand ambassador! In the meantime you can go visit the Beautelab website  where you can currently purchase some products. Prices range from $41 to $180. Retail locations in Singapore will yet need to be confirmed.

How is your experience with anti-aging creams? Have you seen significant improvements after using a cream? Have you ever done a skin scan? And do you know this brand?

I recently bought  Lancome Renergie Lift Volumetry Volumetric Lifting And Shaping Cream SPF 15, an anti-aging cream that promises to be an advanced lifting and shaping cream. I wanted to try something new and determine if a cheaper cream (as compared to my current favorites La Prairie anti-aging night cream and Skinceuticals Age Interrupter) is just as good.

What is Lancome Renergie Lift Volumetry

This lifting and shaping cream is part of Lancome’s new GF-Volumetry range, which is a skincare range created to restore the balance of cellular communication factors (their words, not mine – not sure what that means..)  This cream aims to slim the jawline by redefining the facial oval and restore lost volume and remodel the cheeks. According to Lancome the cream transforms itself on your skin and leaves your skin light and soft silky and lifted. Those are big claims. Unfortunately, the description does not go into further explanation as to how this cream achieves all that. It is, however, exactly, what I need for my face, so I was keen to give this cream a try.

Ingredients

It would be nice if we were given some kind of description of how the ingredients in the cream accomplish the above mentioned goals. No mention is given on the ingredients in the brochure accompanying the cream, however, so I will need to look at the packaging. Only on the box, can I find the ingredients in incredibly small letters on a sparkling silver background. Is this cream not meant for the older ladies? Please note Lancome and many other skincare brands, that older ladies (like me) cannot read text this small! Below is an image where the ingredients are listed though.

Here is an alternative  list of the ingredients though. It reveals that it contains dimethicone, a kind of silicon that may be responsible for more plumpness of the face. It also reveals that this cream has several ingredients that act as a sunscreen. This surprised me as there is no mention of this on the packiging and the sales lady that sold me this cream assured me that this cream did not have SPF and I could use it both for day and night.

My review

This is a very pleasant cream, that is easily applied to the face. It feels soft, but does not immediately absorb into the skin. This makes the skin a bit shiny which I don’t like. It has quite a bit of purfume but it is not too strong and it never bothered me. It’s hard to determine whether this cream has made my skin plumper. My skin DOES look plumper but since I have combined this cream with other creams and anti-aging serums + my daily supplements, it’s hard to know who is the most responsible.

Conclusion

I think Lancome Renergie Lift Volumetry Volumetric Lifting And Shaping Cream SPF 15 is a good cream if you have dry skin and need additional moisture and volume. This cream adds volume to your skin but also tends to make the skin a tad shiny, especially if you live in a warm climate. So, I didn’t love this cream as much as some of my other anti-aging creams, although I feel it does help make the face appear fuller than it is, which in my case is quite important.
