My salon provides a roots pack for £15 that includes the 2 mixes, brush, gloves, shoulder covering and apron. This is a lockdown pack only and my other half has got pretty good at applying.

Since COVID I have been ordering Demi-Permanent hair color from E-Salon (no peroxide if I you over the Demi-Permanent). They advised me that it wouldn’t fully cover my grey and would only last a limited # of shampoos (9?), but I wash my hair 2-3 times per week, and after 6 weeks, the only issue is the roots. It blends perfectly, and I never have a problem with a transition from newly colored roots to hair. Also if I accidentally get color someplace it’s generally easier to remove. It is more work than salon color, but I can color my hair at my leisure, and don’t have to worry about coordinating with a hair cut 🙂

It’s easy. I start with the obvious grey around my face and then work on other parts, making sure not to forget the back. Keeping in mind what color my hair was as a child helps in picking a color as I have had the tendency to think my hair is darker than it is. My first attempts I went way too dark and it was not good. In the dead of winter I’m probably a straight brown, *maybe* an ash brown, but I prefer the golden shades and have gone to red tones on occasion because I have a redheaded child and used to get red and copper highlights in the summer. Currently I’m using a light carmel brown after my last medium chestnut brown. My hair has always been dry so I don’t wash my hair often but always condition and sometimes only use conditioner. I always use a leave-in conditioner. Occassionally I’ll use some oil between washes.

Try to only cover roots. Coloring over all hair with 20 or 30 volume developer over and over will cause too much damage. When the ends need a refresh, use either a temporary color (with no developer) or a demi color with only 10 volume developer.

You can order hair color from Sally’s online. Try their Ion or Wella permanent colors with a 20 volume developer. These are much easier on your hair than drug store brands. They are closer to professional brands. Also, if you want extra protection for your hair, you can buy ION Absolute Perfection — you add this to your color + developer and it conditions/protects hair while you color. Some people are calling it an Olaplex dupe at much less cost.

Should I use a 30 developer, I forgot to ask what strength to use? Thanks

My color is very difficult to match (a deep, cool burgundy); but with the 6-week Covid-19 lockdown of salons, I will probably have to give one of the semi-permanent hair dye products mentioned a try. I bought a MAC eyeshadow to try until I can’t take it any longer. I am still going to the office for work. so I need to be presentable.

I use L’Oreal Couleur Experte Express color and highlights. I get many compliments even from my hairdresser. It is getting harder to find this product so I think L’Oreal might be phasing it out. I was glad to read this article and find some potential options for continuing to color my hair myself.

I used to have my hair dyed RED when it was popular to do so in the 1990’s. My hairdresser worked in the film industry and would go out of town for 3-4 months at a time so she showed me how to do my roots. I wound up with too much product on my hair making it look dull and burned (like a close friend of mine who insists on doing it herself). I had to have it stripped out (terribly hard on hair), going from orange to yellow to white. Most at home haircolorists hair look dull and unhealthy. All that time I was coloring I had this gorgeous silver/white hair that I now enjoy. Cannot go down the street without getting stopped multiple times. Had no idea what I had or how it looked on me till I let it go. Just can’t tell you how fried, dull and dry at home color can make hair look. Yuk!

I started going grey in my mid-20’s so, yeah, I’ve been at this a while 🙁

What color system do u use when u just want to do the roots? I am in between very expensive salon visits and I don’t want to do an all over color but I don’t want to ruin my highlights. I will take any info you can give me. Thank u 🙂
