I have been gray since I was in my 30’s but have been coloring it all this time. I do my roots every few weeks with semi-permanent hair color ( over the counter) but I hate the washed out burnt reddish color! I want to transition to gray with low-lights. My hair is very dry and naturally curly and has gotten thinner on the top and temple area. I want healthier hair, want to stop doing roots every few weeks. My husband also would like to see what I look like with gray hair as he has only seen it colored. My hair is almost to my shoulders in a layered bob style cut. I don’t mind going a little shorter but not too short! Every time I see gray roots I panic and rush to get more color!

Hi Juliet. I like the way you did that. I have a sort of shag with dreadlocks but the roots are dark ashy brown and silver. I have used henna for 20 years and now with the dreads, it is hart to do. Thinking of going natural but afraid to cut the hair .How long is yours?

Your story is a good example of daring and learning and getting a great new face that is more in balance with yourself en with your age.
Why is grey hair so upsetting for women? I always find them so beautiful when the proces of greying is completed.
Grey hair does not mean that you are a grey mouse. When you dress with the colours that suit you in the proportions that are suited for your body and with a little out of your comfortzone daring, then you are a vibrant 40 + or 50+ or 60+ or whatever woman who everybody wants to see and meet!

I felt gronde, neither grey nor blonde. So after a few months, I dyed it dark brown, I needed a break from three different colors. I’m going to try again when I have more grey.

I colored my long-ish hair with the ‘washes out in 8 weeks’ variety for a couple of years. Then I got it cut shorter and simply let it wash out. Never had the tell-tale root line.

As a newly minted 60 year old I figured if not now, when? Fortunately for me I’m only about 20% gray so the tranistion hasn’t been hard at all. I’m not sure what prompted my decision but in part I have a few friends that are 100% gray and the time and expense they have with upkeep is daunting. I figured it would be easiest to ease into it now and fortunately for me I’m able to do that. I find it interesting what color of gray we end up with. I was a light brown in my youth and now I’m that with gray just on my left sided part and hardly non if parted on the right or elsewhere on my head. Thinning hair is much more a concern for me than color.

And I wonder whether I will ever do so. My mother is 88 and still doesn’t let it go grey haha. It doesn’t suit my lifestyle (yet?). I am I high maintenance woman. Always have been and feeling good with that. But, I can totally appreciate women who do take the leap and turn silver grey. Usually it suits them fine. Are the handsome ones go for this easier?

So far I’m two months into the process and have about an inch and a half of virgin growth. It’s quite a liberating feeling! I plan to have my stylist do platinum streaks in the front to ease the visual transition. My hair is quite long ( it falls to my lower back) so this transition will take a long time, but at 48 years old I feel like it’s the perfect time to make the leap!

It looks great on my naturally dishwater blonde hair. I still wear shoulder length hair and only have to color twice annually. We laugh about whether new growth is dishwater or gray. Looks great!

I also changed my hairstyle, going from the ‘bob’ I had worn for years to a shorter layered style.
I didn’t enjoy the growing out process, and it took me a while to mange my new hairstyle, but I’ve no regrets – it turns out I had a head of lovely silver hair hiding under those multi-coloured foils!
One of my friends gave me an apron emblazoned with the words “Silver is the new Blonde”! I wear it with pride.

I stopped fighting with hair dye, my hairdresser stopped fighting with hair dye – my hair just wasn’t taking it so well. So I grew it a little (I had it short-ish already), got the colour chopped out and suddenly I have emerged from mousy brown and messy (very fine wavy hair) to quite smart, palest silver-white. My hair has never been in such good condition, it sits nicely and peoples attitudes have really changed (in a good way), simply down to the hair. It has been fascinating and I am so glad I did this

However, at 72, I am still very unsure about the step. I have shoulder length dark reddish-brown hair, which has been colored since first grey appeared during my mid-twenties. Getting the white (not grey!) to blend as it grows out seems like a nightmare, and I fear it will cause me to look older

Any comments? Thanks.
