I talked to you before about pursuing your best year ever

But how can you do that? What does it involve?

Not such an easy question to answer. Perhaps one month in Rome is a good start.

The idea I came up with is that I’d like to have a year (perhaps multiple?) of experiences. I’d like to meet new interesting people, experience new (and old favourite) places. I’d like to explore as much as possible but at a low speed.

One month in Rome - the river Tiber in Rome and one of the many roman bridges | 40plusstyle.com

Although I’ve really enjoyed the many road trips I’ve been doing in the past, the speed at which you travel is usually high. We hardly ever stay at one place more than a few days.

That’s great if you’re just interested in seeing the major tourist destinations but you also miss out on the all the special, more intimate details, that a new place has to offer.

One month in rome – Travelling slowly

When I visited New York for a whole month (and then again another time) I saw a whole new side of New York. I joined the locals for yoga class. I watched the people go by in Washington Park. I walked for hours like a New Yorker and visited local concerts. I truly got to experience what it was like to live like a new-worker. By the end of my stay I wanted to live there!

Walking beside the Tiber in Rome | 40plusstyle.com

I repeated this experience again for London where I had a similar experience. I got to discover all the hidden streets and the small special boutiques. I was able to wonder around the beautiful parks.

That’s the kind of magic that happens when you travel slow.

Video: what I packed for Rome

Is one month slow enough? I’m not sure. I remember reading the 4 hour workweek when it was first published in 2009. Tim Ferriss would travel and stay 3 months at one place. During that time, he would usually master one skill like dancing the tango in Buenos Aires or kickboxing in Thailand.

So perhaps 1 month is not enough and some places deserve even more time. Something I may consider for future trips. Inspired by that same book, I created an online business (the site you’re reading now!) that I can basically run from anywhere with only a few hours each week. The world is literally my oyster.

I’ve now also set up my home as an air B&B, so my travels can be partially funded through renting out my own house as well.

As for my outfit I went for casual chic on the day. At this time in Rome, you need to dress in layers as it can be all kinds of weather in one day. This day it was quite sunny, so I opted for a blouse with a lighter shirt jacket and jeans. As I was going to a park, I opted for my most comfortable walking shoes. Not the most stylish option perhaps, but certainly the most comfortable and safest (considering my fall 4 months ago).

will travelling and getting those experiences lead to your best year ever?

I’ve come to enjoy the little village of Luz in Portugal which is now my base. I mentioned to my husband that I will miss it. He suggested that he wouldn’t so much as he knows that he’ll return.

But I had just made a few friends, found a great yoga practise and even started a hip-hop class recently. And setting up new activities in a new town does take time. By the time, you’ve figured everything out, you need to leave again.

So we’ll see how it goes.

one month in rome – (Re)discovering Rome

At the moment, I’m definitely looking forward to discovering Rome. It’s a city I’ve visited a few times before as a tourist, but I’ve never stayed longer than one week. Since then I read a lot about Roman history (I highly recommend Colleen McCollough’s series: Masters of Rome) and am so much more knowledgeable of all the events that occurred here in the past, that I’d love to revisit all these places.

I’d like to experience what’s it’s like to sit on the Spanish steps regularly, to live like a Roman and to eat pasta on an almost daily basis.

Admiring Italian style

I want to experience the Italian style again. I remember from my time in Bologna, some 30 years ago that I was so impressed with Italian style. In Bologna at the time, all the shops used to be closed on a Sunday but the shopping streets would be busier than ever.

The whole town came out to enjoy a REALLY slow stroll along these streets in their best clothes. The purpose was to see and be seen. It was a feast to eyes, and soon we would join the crowds as well. It’s called the Passeggiata and according to this article, this still happens.

Times have changed for sure and shops may now be open on Sunday. But I’m sure I’ll still experience lots of typical Italian style.

Will I fall in with Italy all over again? Or is Rome too different from Bologna?

I’ll do my best to record some of the style I spot here and report back to you. I’ll also show you what I packed in an upcoming article.

I hope to keep a record of both the good and the bad and want to record a few more videos on Instagram. Easier said than done as I usually prefer to just BE in the moment and recording a video for others takes you out of that.

But I’d also like a record for my own pleasure so I can remember what it feels like to embark on this new adventure and to capture these moments. If you’d like to follow along, follow me on Instagram.

I’ll keep your posted.

Shop my look

Here are some more choices, inspired by my travel look above. If you want to see some of my other outfits and what I brought to Rome, check out my article how to pack for Rome in November.

Jeans

Paige is my favorite jeans. Excellent quality, soft, flexible and long-lasting.

Tops

Stella Carakasi is my go-to for asymmetrical shirts and tops. This Stella Carakasi shirt is timeless and it’s now back in stock. Other tops I own and love are the New Mood top and the One to Watch sweater (I have it in the grey white version).

Walking shoes

If you’ll be walking a lot, I recommend bringing some dedicated walking shoes that can handle anything. I’m loving my Lowa walking boots.

Shirt Jackets

Shirtjackets are THE trend this season and they are ideal for transitional weather and packing for a holiday. I’ve brought several on my trip. I’ve got mine at Zara, but here are a few good ones I found at Nordstrom.

Have you visited Rome? What places would you like to visit? How do you envision your best year ever?

Last week I told you about a big life change that I’ve made and our plans for moving to Portugal.

I moved away from Singapore where I had lived 15+ years. It’s the place where I conceived the idea of 40plusstyle.com and turned it into one of the biggest websites on style for women over 40.

Moving to Portugal

It was always the plan to move away from Singapore eventually and now that my husband quit his job, the world was our oyster.

We decided that we would consider Portugal first. To that end we traveled the whole country looking for a place to settle part of the year. We still plan to be away half of the year, when we want to explore other places as soon as the world opens up again for travel.

Stumbling upon Luz

By accident I stumbled upon Luz. A small village close to the city of Lagos in the south of Portugal.

Moving to Portugal - Praia da Luz, Algarve, Portugal | 40plusstyle.com

As I mentioned in my previous article, we were traveling through Portugal and I just needed a break. We sometimes travel too fast and don’t take enough time to just relax and do nothing. Neither of us are very good at that.

So when we couldn’t find anything suitable in Lagos, we ended up in nearby Praia da Luz or simply Luz.

Luz means light in Portuguese. Luca is light in Italian and the name of our son. Coincidence? Maybe. But it’s beautiful nonetheless. Perhaps we were meant to end up here…

The village is named Luz because of the light that turns the ‘black rock’ into bright orange in the evenings.

Moving to Portugal - the village of Praia da Luz, Algarve | 40plusstyle.com

It’s a pretty town that is quiet in winter but buzzing in summer when thousands of tourists come to soak up the sun at the gorgeous beach.

We rented a small apartment that had a balcony with a view over the town and the sea. One morning I sat on that balcony and I just felt so peaceful and relaxed, looking over the sea. “Wouldn’t it be nice to have this kind of view all the time?” I wondered.

Until that time, we had always considered moving to one of the bigger cities. We didn’t really think that the south was for us. But for me, that all changed on that day.

Moving to a small town instead of a city

An idea had entered my mind, that we could possibly live here part of the year. Perhaps a small apartment here and another one in Lisbon? We decided to view a few houses in Luz and arranged some visits with a real estate agent.

We explored other little towns in the area too, but decided to focus on just Luz after a while. We were getting more used to the idea of living in a smaller town. But not THAT small…

People enjoying Praia da Luz beach | 40plusstyle.com

We went back to Lisbon and spent a whole month there. Just soaking in the city and working and really getting a feel for the city. We wanted to know what it was like to live there. We wanted to make sure that we really didn’t want to live in a city anymore.

Although we enjoyed living in Lisbon, we didn’t love it and the idea of living close to the sea was becoming ever more appealing.

We explored other sea towns in the Lisbon area, like Cascais, Costa da Caparica and Sesismbra. But now we compared those places to Luz and it just didn’t feel the same.

Luz throughout the year

We wanted to know more about Luz and what it was like to live there. End August we headed back to Luz and stayed for a couple of months. You could find me regularly on the main boulevard, sipping fresh mint tea!

We wanted to know what it was like in the different seasons.

In August and September, it’s still very busy with tourists. People tell us that ‘normally’ there would be many more of course. I enjoyed 3 weekly yoga sessions by the beach.

Autumn in Luz is lovely. The weather is still fabulous and it’s just beautiful to walk on the many tracks around the sea cliffs or to visit a nearby village.

It only starts to get colder in December when you can also expect a bit more rain. Still, there are many sunny days to enjoy and the climate is certainly a lot better than in northern Europe during that time. Yoga on the beach was still ON.

Good indoor heating in winter is important though, so we made a note that our future house needed to have sufficient heating.

By this time, we knew that we wanted to make Luz our home in Portugal and we visited many houses and apartments.

An apartment in Luz

We finally found a beautiful 2 bedroom apartment with the most gorgeous sea view in the centre of town and decided to buy it.

We moved in in January and got to know Luz even better. January and February are the coldest months here. Still, it’s very pleasant most days and I enjoyed my daily walks.

Unfortunately lockdown was in place for the first months of 2021 so it was nice to be in a beautiful town where you could spend a lot of time outdoors. My husband loves getting out on his mountain bike on the many tracks nearby and I joined him one weekend too.

March and April are gorgeous months in Luz. Really sunny and there are flowers everywhere.

In May more and more people start to enjoy the beach. My husband loves to have a dip into the ocean every single day even though the water is icy cold.

A house in Luz

Feeling more confident about Luz, we invested even more . We bought a bigger 4 bedroom town house with a gorgeous sea view and a big shared swimming pool.

Moving to Portugal - 4 bedroom house in Luz, Portugal | 40plusstyle.com

Since we plan to stay in Luz only half the year we will rent out both houses part of the year. If you’re interested, check out our brand new Air B&B Listing for our 2 bedroom apartment.

Our 4 bedroom house is not available for rent yet but will soon be added too.

Changing houses

We also listed both properties on HomeExchange. We love to travel to new places for longer periods of time and home sharing could be an affordable way to do that. You may like to try it too. You could mention me as your sponsor when you sign up by entering the code sylvia-a8ae4 and we will both get extra GP points. You’ll get 100 GP when you create a home and 150 GP when you activate membership. These GP points can be used towards your first exchange. You can view my house here and my apartment here.

HomeExchange can help you exchange your homes | 40plusstyle.com

Our plans moving forward

We still enjoy cities and we plan to make regular month-long city trips. Cities we hope to spend more time in include: New York, London, Paris, Seville, Vienna, Rome, Boston, San Francisco, Vancouver, Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland etc. If you have a central place in these cities and like to share, let me know through HomeExchange.

Moving to another country isn’t easy. There’s lots of paperwork, lots of soul searching and quite a lot of adjustment to make. But I love experiencing life in different places. This is already the 9th country I have lived in. (I earlier lived in The Netherlands, England, South Africa, Italy, Japan, Australia, Singapore, China).

I’m looking forward to explore more countries with month-long stays which I think will be made easier and affordable with HomeExchange.

Sofar our experiences have been good. I feel that we have made the right decisions. Only time will tell of course, but making our decisions a success is largely up to us.

In the end, life is what you make it. Even in a year when everything was out of the ordinary we still got a lot done. We set ourselves up for the next decade of exploration, adventure and hopefully meeting many new friends.

And of course, if you’re curious about Luz, you are very welcome to stay in one of my properties either through Air B&B or HomeExchange. If I happen to be there, let’s have some coffee (or tea, which I prefer).

Moving to Portugal - Praia da Luz | 40plusstyle.com

Next week, I will take you through our exploration of the northern part of Portugal and share my travel capsule for the trip. Although we weren’t looking for a place to live anymore, we still wanted to discover everything that Portugal has to offer (which is a lot).

I thought I would check in with a more personal article today. Quite a few changes have been happening this year and I know some of you are curious about it. Come journey with me as I show you how I’ve been traveling through Portugal to find my new home.

Although this site is about improving your style, ultimately it’s about improving your life and your experience of it. If you’re anything like me, you’re always trying to lead your best life according to your values.

For me, freedom has always been one of my strongest values.

The freedom to work when I want.

Where I want.

And how much I want.

This strong crave for freedom is one of the biggest reasons I started 40+style. If you’re interested in learning more about how that’s possible with a site like 40+style, you may find this article interesting.

40+style is now almost 10 years old!

I know… I can’t believe it either.

Starting the site is one of the best decisions I ever made. Making the site a success is one of my biggest achievements. Not only because it gave me the freedom I craved, but I also got to help many thousands of women feel better about themselves and their style and continue to do so.

I got to meet many inspiring women too. Both off and online.

A gatering with members of the 40+style community | 40plusstyle.com

It’s been both rewarding and fulfilling.

To date more than 30 million people have visited the site.

I may reflect more on 10 years of 40+style a little later in September.

a lifestyle change

Last year my husband resigned from his job. Our son went off to university in Australia, where he was born. As new empty nesters and no ‘jobs’ to go to, we could now move anywhere.

Of course that was a bit harder when the coronavirus hit when it was suddenly difficult to travel.

Still, last May we left Singapore for Portugal from an almost empty Changi Airport.

An empty Changi Airport in May 2020 | 40plusstyle.com

We craved going back to Europe and Portugal appealed to us for several reasons. We arrived with a few small suitcases as tourists ready to explore.

We had no idea where we would want to ‘settle’ as I only had been to Portugal twice for 2 fleeting visits.

Exploring and traveling through Portugal

We started our exploration in Lisbon. We have always been city people and this seemed like the natural place to start.

We walked through the many beautiful small streets of Lisbon.

Traveling through Portugal - streets in Lisbon Portugal | 40plusstyle.com

We came across this cute store solely dedicated to rubber duckies. “How can there be a market for this? “we thought. Apparently there is a big market for it. It’s a chain store! (we saw more of these stores afterwards).

Rubber Duckie Store is Lisbon | 40plusstyle.com

We visited nearby Sintra with its many historic buildings and palaces. Especially beautiful were the gardens of the Quinta da Regaleira palace where you can find the very special Knights of Templar initiation well.

We also visited coastal town Cascais and further north beach town Ericeira where we got a bit adventurous with mountain bikes.

Another touristic highlight was the small town of Obidos where you get taken back to the past.

A pleasure of traveling through Portugal at the end of Spring is that you come across MANY stork nests.

We later traveled South to Evora, a beautiful town in the province of Alentejo, one of the driest areas of Portugal.

The city centre is beautiful with many old streets and small restaurants.

Dining in Evora, Portugal | 40plusstyle.com

Evora has lots of histroric (Roman) monuments too.

You’ll also come across lots of cork trees. The beauty about these trees is that they are very sustainable. After the cork has been taken off, it grows right back!

Another highlight from this region is the Almendres Cromlech. It is thought to be the oldest stone circle in Europe, even older than Stonehenge.

Portugal has more than 150 forts and castles and you can see them literally everywhere. I especially liked the castles in Marvao and Castelo de Vide.

Through several other villages we arrived in southern Portugal, in the Algarve. This is the place where normally thousands of tourists descend in July and August to soak up the sunshine.

Faro was our next accommodation stop. It’s the capital of the Algarve and the place where most tourists arrive. It’s a beautiful town which was very quiet when we visited.

Next stop was Lagos. We had marked this as a potential spot for us to live. It’s a town that attracts quite a lot of tourists but also digital nomads. These are people that run online businesses (like me) and it’s always great to meet with others that understand the work I do.

It has incredible beaches and coastlines too.

Traveling through Portugal - The Algarve Coast | 40plusstyle.com

It’s a lovely town for sure but it was also very quiet when we were there so it was difficult to get an idea of the ‘real’ vibe. I was also getting a bit tired from travelling from town to town, so I wanted a break.

I told my husband that I wanted to go to a resort with a pool and a lazy chair. My husband wanted a nice beach. We couldn’t find anything suitable in Lagos and we ended up in a smaller town just 10 minutes away from Lagos called Luz where I had a few glorious days on the beach on a lazy chair.

Wearing a green dress in Luz, Portugal

Little did I know that this ‘need’ for a bit of rest and relaxation would change the course for the year and our life moving forward.

But I will tell you more about that next week.

For now tell me, would you want to move to another country? And if yes, what country would you go?

This website has always been about feeling confident.

When I set out to create 40+style I really wanted to convey to women that there is no ‘used by’ date for beauty and style and confidence.

That, in fact, our confidence increases as we age.

How a pretty picture helps with feeling confident

The majority of the articles here on 40+style still focus on outward confidence, but more and more I’ve come to realize that true confidence comes from the inside out.

I recorded this podcast about it: how to get confident with your appearance.

It’s easier to feel confident about ourself if the outward picture is cute to look at. When you look good, it feels easier to feel good.

That’s why I feel there’s nothing wrong by dressing ourself in such a way, that the things we love about ourself are highlighted while other parts are downplayed. Who doesn’t want to feel better about the themselves?

How to cultivate true self confidence | 40plusstyle.com

A pretty picture is not a requirement for feeling confident

But a pretty outward appearance shouldn’t be a requirement. Women certainly shouldn’t feel like they ‘have to’ put makeup on before they step outside.

it worries me a bit when I hear women say, that they don’t dare to step outside without makeup on. Why not? Why can’t we just be fully ourselves and not feel fully confident?

I feel that it’s partly because we have been conditioned that as women we need to look the part. That we need to look pretty to be accepted.

Our society as a whole still has a strong preference for the young and beautiful and we are often made to believe that we need to look younger and prettier to function well or be taken seriously by our bosses.

So many of these ‘rules’ have become so ingrained in society and our brains that we actually start to believe them.

In fact you’re beautiful and amazing just as you are!

True beauty, strength and the ability to function well doesn’t come from outward appearance.

It comes from within us.

It comes from a belief in yourself and a deep knowing that you are beautiful. It comes from true self confidence.

How is it possible that so many women over 40 feel happier with their body in their 40s and 50s than they were in their teens even though they are bigger with more lumps and bumps?

That’s because they have come to accept themselves as they are. It’s because their thoughts about their body has changed. It has nothing to do with the shape or size of their body.

They have come to realize that the shape or size of our body doesn’t mean anything about us deep inside or our self worth. That a body size doesn’t define beauty or confidence.

Confident from the inside out | 40plusstyle.com

Why do so many women still believe otherwise?

Unfortunately there are still so many women who continue to struggle with poor body image or other confidence issues.

That needs to stop.

Because low self esteem and a lack of confidence in yourself, either caused by poor body image or other issues, is hurting your happiness and opportunities in every other part of your life too.

Low self confidence keeps you stuck

I have found that low self confidence is the main reason so many women get stuck in life.

When you don’t feel confident, you’re not showing up in the best way you can.

You don’t feel confident enough to pursue your goals.

You don’t feel that you can become a stylish woman.

You don’t feel like you can change career, pursue a new relationship, start a new hobby or even start a business.

And rather than solving some of the underlying issues, you find yourself buffering with food or alcohol just to feel better.

The truth is: self confidence is something you can actively work on

I’ve made it my mission to help women cultivate confidence from the inside out.

Self confidence is not something you were born with and it’s not something that you either have or don’t have. It’s something you can actively work on.

It’s not a character trait either and being introverted or extraverted has nothing to do with how confident you can become.

My 21 steps course already covers everything you need to know to feel confident from the outside. My new program will teach you how to cultivate true confidence from the inside.

I’ve studied this topic in depth over the last few years and have become a certified life coach.

Through my study and experience in working with women on their confidence, I’ve identified that there are 4 key steps that will lead to true self confidence.

Feeling confident inside and out | 40plusstyle.com

The ABLE self confidence formula

The Self Confidence Formula is my unique process for cultivating true self confidence.

Once you master these 4 steps, you will be able to cultivate self confidence on a continuous basis.

You’ll be able to accept yourself just as you are and will not let anything get in the way from leading your best life.

Cultivating confidence is a practice

Of course, you’ll not be able to build true self confidence overnight, and that’s why I’m using the word CULTIVATE. The confidence formula is a process you repeat frequently to build this confidence for yourself.

And once you have true self confidence, you know that you can go after whatever it is that you want to do.

That is what I want for you and all the women who read my articles. We need more truly confident women, who own their beauty and power and who can enrich the world with all the gifts they have to give.

On a scale from 1 to 10, how confident are you?

My Mission this year is that I want to help at least 1000 women feel more confident. On a scale from 1 to 10 I want to help you move your confidence from a 5 or below to at least an 8 or above.

Want to find out more, check out the details.

Don’t forget to tell me in a comment below where you find yourself on the confidence scale. I’d love to hear from you.

Perhaps you’ve reflected on the year that was and have started thinking about the year ahead?

Maybe you’ve started thinking about the things that you want?

In this article I’d like to explore that a bit further and discover WHY we want what we want.

I also recorded a podcast on this topic. You can listen to it here.

Why do you want what you want?

If you have been reading my article on how to feel better, you already know that the reason you want something is because of the way you think it will make you feel.

This refers to style too.

So many women in my survey just want to look better and be more stylish.

The question is why?

Ask yourself, why is style important to you?

It’s actually one of the first questions I ask in my style course.

Because the answer is important.

So try it out and ask yourself why is style important to me?

Before we buy our next item or go for a shopping spree, let’s stop for a moment and ask yourself: ‘Why do I want this new item?’.

You may answer that you need to fill in your wardrobe, as you may have learned to create a capsule wardrobe and make sure that you don’t have any orphan items in your closet.

But I’d like you to investigate a bit further.

Ask yourself Why again.

‘Why is it important for me to have clothes that I like?’

Here are some possible answers:

  • Because I’d like to look good.
  • Because I like to feel like myself.
  • Because I like to get compliments.

When you keep on questioning, you often end up with a feeling.

  • Because I like to feel confident
  • Because I like to feel beautiful.
  • Because I like to feel important (e.g. in a work situation).
Discover your why and get clear on why you want what you want

The reason you make an effort with your appearance is because you want to feel a certain way

As you’ll have learned from my article on how to feel good, it’s actually possible to feel that way also without the new clothes. So make sure to read that article if you like to know more about that.

Whatever you want in your life is because you believe that you will feel better in the having of it.

You learned, that you can already create the feeling you want to have right now.

You create the feeling with your own mind and no shiny object or accomplishment can create it for you long term.

I’m explaining that in my article on how to feel confident in your clothes.

For this article I’d like to go a bit deeper into why we want what we want in other areas of our life too.

Apart from the topic of style, what else do you want?

Women in my survey wanted:

  • To get fit and strong
  • Do more with less
  • Get a house by the see
  • Feel happy with their style
  • Start a business

Why do you want more?

Whenever you want more it’s always good to ask why that is. The simple why is the best place to start.

WHY?

  • Why do I want to do this?
  • Why do I think it creates the feeling I crave more?
  • Why is this so important to me?

The question has served me well

Overall I’ve been incredibly happy with where I’ve been going the last 10 years, but my life is always in development.

And as I start doing new things and continue to develop my skills and make new plans, it’s still the question that is most relevant.

And I keep asking myself: why?

If you want to discover more about my personal and business why, read my article on my personal site on finding your why.

How about you?

Do you need a why?

The first question to ask is why you need a why in the first place.

So often we try to find that elusive purpose. We want to know the reason we are on this earth.

We want to have a defined purpose.

But I’ve come to realize one thing.

Your purpose is just to live on the planet.

Your purpose is just to live your life, exactly the way you want to.

You don’t have to do noble things. You don’t have to make a lot of money. You don’t have to save the world. You don’t have to travel.

You can simply be who you want to be.

So why should you want more?

The simple answer is: you don’t.

You don’t have to want more unless you want to.

It’s not because you’ll be more worthy, more important, more powerful, more appreciated, more liked or any of those things.

You’re already good enough.

I believe that there is one very good reason though.

It will make your experience on the planet a lot more fun.

I could have spent lots of hours watching television. Instead I built a business, helped and met lots of amazing people and now have enough resources that allow me to travel extensively each year.

It doesn’t matter what you choose. You are still a perfect human.

But creating something that is important to you and fulfilling some of your dreams, just feels really good!

Discover your why and you purpose

How do you find your why?

If you accept that you are already good enough and that you don’t have to do anything to make your life more meaningful, you can then ask yourself why.

  • Why do I want more?
  • Why do I want what I want?
  • Why do I want to run this business?
  • Why do I need more money
  • Why do I want a new challenge

Why a big why is important

Here is why a big why is so important.

No matter what you’re going to choose to do, it will not be easy.

If you’re going to choose to do something different or new, you’ll run into a lot of resistance.

Your brain will start shouting at you to go back to the sofa, watch Netflix and get comfortable.

Your brain likes to do what it has always done.

If your why is not big enough, you will give into all the distractions and the chatter of the brain.

However, if your why is big enough, you will not give in. Because the discomfort of not reaching your big why, your goal, will be more painful than the temporary discomfort you’re experiencing right now.

Focus on the why

When you start thinking about your why, your brain will want to do something else.

It will want to how the HOW and the WHAT.

It will immediately start to throw all kinds of objections at you:

  • Who do you think you are?
  • You’re not qualified to do that?
  • You’ve never written a word in your life. How could you possibly write a book?
  • You don’t have any time to do that
  • You have a family to support
  • You don’t have the money to go traveling
  • There are already so many other people doing what you want
  • etc.

It’s very important NOT to pay any attention to your chatting brain. Remember, your brain just wants to go back to being comfortable.

At this stage you just want to know your big why.

Let’s leave all the hows and whats for later.

How do you know that your why is big enough?

Here are some signs that your why is big enough.

  • You get excited
  • You feel energized
  • You will do something even if you don’t feel like it.
  • you’ll immediately want to start with your plans
  • You’re taking action
  • You’re getting results
  • You’re doing whatever it takes.

Want to discover your why?

The reinvention guide and bucket list I created for you will get clearer on what you want.

Let’s create your best year ever!

I would love to help you get your most amazing year, or even decade ever.

Yes it really is possible to travel light by packing all the outfits you will need for a 10-day trip in carry on luggage!

Just imagine the feeling of freedom when you waltz out of the airport without having to wait for your suitcases! It just takes a bit of planning.

Here are some top tips for traveling light

#1 Don’t think about packing individual items.

Think about packing a capsule travel wardrobe and how it will all go together. Stick to a color palette so that everything you pack will go with everything else.

#2 The bulkiest items in your luggage are likely to be your shoes.

Take a couple of pairs at most.

Wherever you’re going in the world, you can usually get away with a pair of sandals and a pair of sneakers, as you’re likely to be doing a lot of walking!

#3 Wear your bulkiest items to travel in.

If you need to bring a pair of boots, then wear them.

The same goes for pants and any layers like wraps, cardigans or scarves. Wear your hat too, otherwise it will get squashed in your luggage!

#4 Use compression sacks.

Once all your clothing is inside, you simply roll them to squeeze the excess air out.

For tips on how to do this check our article on how to pack with packing cubes.

Plus, you can use them to organize your outfits in different bags, so you can find everything much more easily.

#5 Plan your outfits

If you already have your itinerary planned out, then think about what you will be doing each day and what you will need to wear to do it in.

#6 Use your beach bag as your handbag on the plane

It will give you a nice big bag for those extra items!

#7 Choose hard-working pieces that have multiple uses

Things like beach cover-ups you can wear as tops.

While 10 days worth of outfits can sound like a challenge, it’s definitely doable.

Packing essentials

By getting yourself organized, it’s much easier to pack, and to see exactly how much you are taking with you. Make sure you have the right size case for the cabin. Check with your airline’s guidelines. Treat yourself to a passport holder and some useful tools such as packing cubes, shoe bags and clear cosmetics bags.

To wear on the plane

To pack in your suitcase

Think about your pieces as outfits rather than separate pieces. Roll your pants to fit them in, and pack more tops than bottoms!

Here, I’ve assumed you’re heading on a trip which incorporates some beach time with some sight-seeing, but the same principles hold true wherever you’re going.

This capsule features neutrals, but then adds in some blues, reds and yellows. Plus, don’t forget, you have the clothes you traveled in. With 2 dresses and 8 tops, that definitely gives you 10 outfits.

There is a reversible swimsuit, so it looks as if you brought 2! Plus a bikini. Adding a couple of statement necklaces into your case won’t take up much room, but will allow you to create different looks, taking you from day to night.

The DVF brand from Diane von Furstenberg has never been on my radar. I always found her styles too colorful and bohemian for my style.

That all changed last August when I was shopping in New York.

DVF silk asymmetrical top | 40plusstyle.com

I stumbled upon a sale and found this fabulous blue graphical top. I love the asymmetric hem and the silk fabric.

DVF uses a lot of silk in their garments which is a big plus for me. Nothing delights me more than wearing silk.

My style has also gravitated towards more prints. Since I often wear only one layer, I find that a beautiful print makes the outfit more interesting and adds a lot more color to my look and rather pale face.

SILK TOPS I LOVE IN STORES NOW

I also bought this colorful dress in New York, which I have worn a LOT. You can’t beat the location below: the Maldives.

This is a silk dress which is perfect for a summer day. The dress has open slits at the bottom which means I can be creative and tie knots with them and use the dress as a top. I got a lot of great feedback on my look with jeans here, with many of you thinking this was actually a top!

MY FAVORITE DVF DRESSES IN STORE NOW

I also bought this short dress which I mainly wear as a tunic top. This is a combination of viscose and silk and it has some fabulous asymmetrical elements that I like.

JUMPSUITS I LOVE

My most recent purchase is this silk top that I can wear two ways. It’s intended to wear with the the black at the front, but it also looks really good with the blue worn at the front.

I love versatility in garments I buy as it means I tire of them less quickly and it’s fun to be creative with my clothes.

As you can see my kick-flare jeans are a favorite at the moment. You can wear your silk tops casually with jeans or make them more dressy (top left) wearing them over silk pants.

I recently also bought a shirt dress from DVF which I have worn as a tunic top a few times already but I will save photos from that for another day.

WHAT I LOVE FROM DVF – CURRENTLY ON SALE

Is there a brand that you have recently discovered or recently started really liking?

With all the (over)sharing these days, you get to feel more and more that it is unacceptable to wear the same outfit more than once and that we constantly need to buy something new.

You hardly ever see a sharing of the same outfit twice. And although some instagrammers and bloggers are good at combining their old items with new purchases very often, a new outfit is shown.

As a blogger I definitely feel the pressure to come up with something new all the time, to wear the latest trend and to keep entertaining you with the latest and greatest.

The truth is, I don’t want to do it.

I feel it’s become rather crazy how many (cheap) clothes we buy and how so many clothes remain in our closets unworn.

I want to do more with less.

Quite a challenge, I must say, for someone who loves the new and the trendy and who easily gets bored with her clothes.

But then again, if it’s a challenge I want to face it head on.

Since leaving New York, I haven’t bought any new clothes and have been wearing various outfits multiple time. I’m also forcing myself to become more creative with my existing clothes.

Here are some of my tips on how to do more with less and be happy with the clothes that you already own.

Read our ultimate guide to creating a capsule wardrobe that works best for you.

I have illustrated my points with a few outfits created from my cropped red top from Stella Carakasi (another option here) from their current collection (all other items are old). The black Fly London shoes are still available as well.

#1 Don’t shop

Rather obvious, but definitely the most effective. Did you know that many women also buy outfits to go shopping in? So you actually need more outfits because you want to go to town to shop!

If you don’t go shopping, you don’t need those clothes and you will not buy new ones.

2. Know your style

This is a big one. When you know your style, you will make the RIGHT choices which means that you will be happier with your clothes for longer. So many of my style students report that they buy fewer clothes and what they do buy gets worn more and makes them happy.

Investing in a programme like my style course will pay you back many times.

Do more with less and get creative with your clothes | 40plusstyle.com

Red always looks good on me so definitely part of my style As is asymmetry as I like the more edgy vibe of an asymmetrical top and they are pretty timeless too.

3. Know your uniform and get the ingredients

It can be so handy to have a ‘uniform’ which is really an outfit formula that you know just works for you.

For me it’s cropped skinny pants with a beautiful top.

The top is usually something a bit special. It’s asymmetrical or has a beautiful print.

It’s my go-to outfit that always works and if I’m really being honest I wouldn’t really need much else in my wardrobe to look good.

Red cropped top over white base - How to do more with less | 40plusstyle.com

This look is a bit more elaborate than my usual uniform as this is a layered look, but the principle is the same: skinny cropped pants and a great top!

4. Get a wide range of good solid basics

This is related to the point above but it goes a bit wider. You want to build the perfect foundation for your wardrobe.

For example, I need to make sure that I have one or two good white pants, good jeans, good black pants and a good layering top in white, a good top in red, a good jean jacket.

From there I can build many outfits. I can easily combine with a printed top or add different accessories.

Red cropped top over grey pants - how to do more with less | 40plusstyle.com

This is my winter version of my white cropped pants. These are grey in cool wool.

5. Get your accessories covered

Accessories are a great way to make even the most basic outfits more interesting, so make sure you have a good collection of necklaces or earrings.

That way you can wear the same outfit but still look different.

Wearing a statement necklace | 40plusstyle.com

2 different necklaces create a different look!

6. Get busy with a (passion)project

When I moved to Singapore I had a lot of time on my hands. And guess what happens then? You go shopping!

Definitely one of the most effective things you can do to avoid too much shopping is to get busy with work or a project you love.

These days I’m so busy with my projects that I rarely have time to shop. And before you feel sorry for me, this is a choice that I make myself.

I love my work and there are several projects that I really want to get out into the world. These are far more important that the latest clothes or trends.

If I haven’t convinced you yet, here are a few advantages of doing more with less

  • You save lots of money! Spend it on experiences!
  • You can find your existing clothes much more easily and dressing each morning becomes a breeze!
  • Buy less but better and truly love your clothes.
  • Help the environment; fast fashion is simply not sustainable in the long run.
  • If you extend your ‘doing more with less’ to your home as well, it becomes so much easier to manage.
  • Increase your feeling of ‘freedom’; it really feels less burdersome when you have a lot less ‘stuff’.

You may also want to learn how to create an ethical style. Read our artcle on how you can create a sustainable fashion capsule wardrobe

Looking good is more about style and not so much about how much you own and the latest and greatest and that is what we continue to focus on here at 40+Style.

I’m by no means perfect and I still have a lot of clothes but I am more consciously thinking about doing more with less.

How about you?

With the launch of the new 21 steps style course (you can still enroll here) and settling into Singapore again, I haven’t got round to sharing some of the photos Denton took of me in New York.

So let’s start today with these crop flared jeans.

The perfect pair of jeans for women | 40plusstyle.com

Cropped flare jeans is a new jeans silhouette for me that I had my eyes on for a while but had not been able to find the perfect pair. So when I came across a store of my favorite jeans brand Paige, I knew I had to go in and get my hands on one of their crop flare jeans.

Just like my other bootleg jeans from Paige, they fit like a dream and I love the hip silhoutte they create.

The stretchy but sturdy jeans do a great job at tucking the belly in, so I can wear these with a short top, which is often the best kind of top for cropped flares. You can find many more tips on how to wear cropped jeans here.

How to style modern pieces | 40plusstyle.com

The top is from a new-to-me brand Kow Tow and I love the colors and the natural fabric and breezy fit.

Crop flare jeans with a colorful top | 40plusstyle.com

These jeans look great with open vamp shoes but also with these high heeled open toe booties (brand is Lilian), perfect for my climate. Quite a few of you have already asked where they can buy them online, but unfortunately am not able to find them. Amazon still has quite a few alternative options though.

How to transition this outfit to fall?

As many of you are now getting into cooler weather, I just wanted to give some tips on how you transition this outfit into fall.

  • Add a short jacket. Should be about the same length as the top
  • Instead of booties wear this with longer boots. Make sure that they go underneath the pants
  • For slightly cooler weather you can also play with a sleeveless vest
  • Wear with a short dress or tunic. Make sure you belt it though to get the desire silhouette!

Finally the accessories. Very important in every outfit.

The glasses are from Freida Rothman, earrings, ring from Bira Biro (read an interview with the designer here) and I purchased the bangle at the Museum of Arts & Design in New York.

As you know I’ve been travelling a lot this month. I thought I would tell you a little bit about it with the help of the photos I posted on Instagram.

First stop was Lisbon, in Portugal where we spent a day wondering the little beautiful streets. Wearing Dogstar clothing top (old) and Stella Carakasi skirt.

Then we flew to Miami where I got to enjoy the beach for a day… wearing a flower tunic I have had for years and the sunhat I bought in The Netherlands. Find many more tunics here.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BWiqxlsFUAY/?taken-by=40plusstyle

and got a chance to sip some fabulous mojitos… Wearing my reversible Lizzy & Coco flower dress here.

In Miami we boarded our cruise ship which took us to the Cayman Islands, Mexico, Belize and Honduras. Wearing an older flower top and the high low skirt from Zara.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BWp5xUdFwbn/?taken-by=40plusstyle

We also went to Savannah in Cuba for a few days where I wore my Lizzy & Coco reversible dress again the other way around.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BXA-IHQFiuG/?taken-by=40plusstyle

This is my favorite picture from Cuba. You can see the old and the new and one of the many old timers in the foreground.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BXIS3RnFLy4/?taken-by=40plusstyle

Back in Florida, we went to Quay West where we rented bicycles. Wearing my silk mini dress that I acquired in New York 2 years ago proving that you can wear silk for all kinds of occasions!

https://www.instagram.com/p/BXEu9T8ljm_/?taken-by=40plusstyle

After Florida we spent a few days with family in Los Altos in California and then I said goodbye to my family who went back to Singapore. I travelled further to LA where I met 40+style contributor Rosemond. Wearing new (very wide) pants from Filippa K and my older In Good Company top.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BXR0UL7lgWT/?taken-by=40plusstyle

In LA we also had a meetup with members of the 40+Style club, pictured here are myself, Gina, Rosemond and Tracy. I’m wearing my old long asymmetrial blouse by and Weekend by Max Mara pants. Booties are by Lilian (sorry can’t find these anywhere online!).

https://www.instagram.com/p/BXcF35wF3o2/?taken-by=40plusstyle

I met my online friend Susan for the first time in real life.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BXjOxZdlbaw/?taken-by=40plusstyle

Right now I’m in New York where I sat down on the Brooklyn Bridge….

https://www.instagram.com/p/BXvxNY1FrxA/?taken-by=40plusstyle

And met up with many fabulous friends: from left to right myself, Shauna, Teresa, Diana, Sue.

When you meet such stylish colorful people, you need to look the part. I wore my new african print ‘suit’t by the brand Weekend by Max Mara. Could not find the exact same suit online but here is a top in the same print.

Yesterday we got together with many of the fabulous women I met 2 years ago. These women are definitely not afraid of color and print. From left to right, Diana, myself (wearing old DKNY skirt and Essentiel blouse), Valerie, Sue, Jean, Dayle and Teresa.

I’m going to be in New York for a few weeks more and if you want to keep track of my adventures, be sure to follow me on Instagram.

Which of the above is your favorite travel outfit?

If you have been following me on Instagram, you will know that I’ve recently been to Iceland. An incredibly beautiful country that I highly recommend you visit.

In today’s article I will whet your appetite about this beautiful country and show you what to wear to Iceland and what to pack.

What to wear in Iceland in summer

As the name Iceland suggests it does not really get very warm in summer. Although you may be lucky to see the sun regularly (I was) it’s still very cool most of the time so warm clothing is essential. However, the weather changes all the time so wearing layers is key to being comfortable.

Since Island is very much about exploring its beautiful nature you will also want to pack mainly practical clothing that will help make exploring comfortable and pleasurable.

Here is what I wore most days

Camisole

My  first layer was a regular singlet. I like wearing these as a first layer to streamline my clothes and get warm and comfortable. You can review our article on the best camisoles here.

Uniqlo heat tech t-shirts with long sleeves

An ideal second layer is a form fitting stretchy t-shirt with either long or short sleeves. I love my heattech tops from Uniqlo.

I have them in various thicknesses and brought them in black, white and burgundy. As I get cold easily I like my long sleeved versions but you could also suffice with short sleeves.

A fleece jacket

I got a fancy fitted one in Lila and this is what kept me nice and warm. Since I wore thin layers underneath, even with this jacket on I still did not look bulky. It’s easy to put in my back pack when it got too hot, but I wore this most of the time.

(Skinny) stretchable jeans

I took very stretchable skinnies in black (2 versions) and my blue jeans. All 3 were very comfortable to wear and I did not need any special pants. You can also consider water proof pants or special tracking pants.

A good rain coat

Bringing a rain / wind jacket is absolutely essential in Iceland. Hardly a day goes by when it doesn’t rain (although we were very lucky to get very little of it) and you want to keep warm and dry.

I invested in a really good rain jacket that looks good as well. Longer than a regular rain jacket and super light weight, it was easy to take it on an and off and store in my back pack when I didn’t need it.

I also like the fact that it’s quite neutral. although  a lot of active wear is bright coloured I actually think that the pictures look nicer when you blend in a bit with the landscape rather that stand out too much.

Comfortable walking shoes

Due to a bad experience 20 years ago with tracking shoes I never purchased these anymore. This time my husband encouraged me to do so as he didn’t feel the soles of the booties I was planning to take were safe enough.

I invested in lightweight waterproof walking shoes and I’m so glad I did. I wore these all the time and they were so comfortable. Walking in the mountains will never be the same again!

I had lightweight ankle shoes that were water resistant. Forgot brand could be the North face.

A scarf

My travel to Gullfoss, also known as Golden Falls near south Iceland Gullfoss

I would take 2. A light scarf for milder weather and a warmer one for colder weather.

One or 2 fancy sweaters

If you go out in the evening or for your visit to Reykjavik, you may like to take 1 or 2 fancier items.

I brought my asymmetrical sweater (on sale) that I could layer over one of my long sleeved t-shirts.

Extra booties

I wore my other comfortable booties for those days that I wasn’t trekking or exploring. Mainly for the airport and in Reykjavik.

A sleeping mask

It’s light 24/7 in Iceland which can play havoc with your sleep. If you think that the country has prepared for this and has black out curtains think again! They do the exact opposite. We stayed in 7 different places and none of them blocked the lights. One of them even had see through curtains.

Optional light down jacket

I actually did not pack mine and did not miss it. If you have a good fleece jumper and combine that with your rain coat, that will be enough for summer.

I had an amazing trip and was happy with the things I packed. I hope this packing and inspiration guide will have gotten you clear on what to wear In Iceland in summer and perhaps even have inspired you to visit Iceland yourself.

Have you visited Iceland? What did you wear?

Staying on the theme of color, I thought I’d show you another outfit I wore in The Netherlands.

I bought this colorful blouse to jazz up my jeans and white pants. This ended up being the perfect outfit for a casual stroll around town.

It’s from a delicious new brand that I discovered Essentiel. Although I couldn’t find this particular piece there is a good selection of Essentiel pieces at Yoox.

Also notice these new shoes from the brand Wolky.

Keen observers of this site will notice that they’re quite similar to my Fly London sandals. As I’ll be travelling the coming months I really wanted to have shoes that are super comfortable to walk on. Although I love my Fly Londons, they are still quite high and more suitable for short city walks.

These ones are lower and even more comfortable and they performed well on their first test walk!

The ‘cool’ factor of these shoes is a little lower than the Fly London ones, but sometimes you just have to sacrifice style for comfort. Not completely though!

I still feel these shoes are hip due to the silver finish and funky soles. I think I will get a lot of mileage out of these ones!

There is a little print mixing going on in this outfit as well with the stripes of this new sunhat.

Getting back on the topic of color, here is how Greetje added a pop of green with this fabulous bag. Adding a little ‘pop’ like this is a great way to make your outfit even more interesting.

It’s summer, which means a great time for a change in hairstyle!

I went a bit more radical this time as I really wanted an asymmetrical cut. Although I like the change I’m not 100% happy with the cut yet and will probably have the longer side cut a bit shorter so it’s only shorter in the front.

We’ll see what my new stylist will say! I’m in The Netherlands now so will have to try my luck with a brand new hairstylist. I also plan to add some highlight for summer.

This was  one of the most colorful tops of my summer capsule that I packed for summer.

It’s perfect for high waisted pants as it will highlight your waist despite the wider fitted model of this top. It works really well as a layering piece too. For more tips on wearing these (more challenging) pants, check my tips on how to style wide cropped pants.

The Netherlands is usually where I purchase new shoes as they’re all on sale and available in my size.

I’m loving these new brogues from the (new to me) brand Gabor which will be very comfortable for walking. I noticed they have lots of other fabulous shoes too.

I have also been adding more colorful pieces to my summer capsule so this top is no longer the only colorful item. I will show you more of that in later articles.

Color is very much on my mind at the moment as it’s the style training theme this month in the 40+Style Club!

image consultant and color professional Ruth Essex dives deep into all aspects of color in this month’s style training with lots of great information on how to find your best neutral, your best metallic, how to make neutrals interesting and how to combine colors.

If you like to take advantage of this training as well as the additional capsule wardrobe you will receive and the opportunity to be part of one of the most stylish and supportive communities, you can now join the style club now and get instant access.

Alkmaar is known for its cheese market but is also a quaint town with canals, lots of cute little streets and fun boutiques to match.

As you can see the sun was out which means everyone goes outdoors so sit on one of the many beautiful outdoor terraces in Alkmaar. It was also a great opportunity to wear my new hat.

Just by accident Greetje was dressed in the same colors as me: red, white and blue.

You may recognise the top as i bought this in Australia a few years ago. I love it when something old goes perfectly with something new. This striped skirt from Stella Carakasi is right up my alley. The Fly London sandals (similar) are still a favorite for city trips. (for many more great options for good arch support shoes go here)

Of course we did some shopping too. I bought this fabulous dress. It’s a reversible dress that you can wear both ways and I especially love the right version.

The striped fabric comes in pants too which I wore on another day while visiting a market in Haarlem. It works really well with my asymmetrical knitted top (similar) and paired with my Antelope sandals.

Here is another knitted high-low top that I wore paired with my older asymettrical booties from Antelope.

I LOVE a versatile piece of clothing.

When I come across an item I like and I see countless ways that I can wear the piece, it makes for an easy buying decision.

That was the case with this striped dress.

Short striped dress worn over pants | 40plustyle.com

It’s made out of a stretchy material which makes it very comfortable to wear. The dress is short and came without a belt but I instantly saw its opportunities as a tunic. Since it has sleeves, it can be worn for warmer and cooler weather situations.

Blue striped dress with fuchsia pumps | 40plusstyle.com

It can also be worn as a dress on its own, but since I’m one of those women who doesn’t particularly like to show the knees, I don’t think I will wear it much in this way unless I’m heading for a beach resort. I do like the look of the dress with these fuchsia kitten heels though.

I’m much more likely to wear this over pants. And I particularly like it with my bootcut Paige jeans. The belt gives the dress structure and I like this new silhouette that goes in and out.

A striped dress worn over bootleg jeans | 40plusstyle.com

Wearing it over skinnies is another no-brainer for this dress. These are cropped skinny jeans from Uniqlo. Super comfortable and very easy to combine with your longer tops in spring and summer. The fuchsia accessories give the look some extra color which is good for my complexion.

Blue dress worn over cropped denim skinnies | 40plusstyle.com

These whiter jeans are even wider but I really like this wide over wide silhouette at the moment. Of course it’s important to give your look structure which I’m doing with the belt. The heels help to give me some height and compared with the belt (which I belt quite high) it gives the appearance of nice long legs.

Short dress over wider white pants | 40plusstyle.com

This dress is a great example of how one new items can instantly refresh your wardrobe. All other pieces in on this page are at least one year old.
