Do your clothes say as much about your love of music as they do your love of fashion? Then it’s likely you have a rock style personality.

How to tell if you have a rock style personality

There is a lot of crossover between rock style and other style personalities such as the street or urban style personality.

You may also find that you are drawn to such styles as bohemian which has many roots in musical culture.

What is rock style?

Rock style manages to be both daring and classic at the same time in that it combines edgy elements while also being timeless. You’ll find lots of tips and outfit ideas in this article on how to achieve or refine your rock style looks.

What are the characteristics of rocker style?

Below, you’ll find a list of the characteristics of rock style. Take a look and see if you tick the boxes!

Deborah @deborahgates_ above (read her style interview here) shows how you could rock a dress with a rock chick look.

Below are some signs that you have a rock style personality…

Not sure about your style personality? Take the fun style personality quiz!

Your wardrobe is full of black

If I were to open your closet, I’d see a lot of black, black and more black. It’s definitely the color that dominates your outfits.

Buckles and studs

While you won’t opt for overtly feminine embellishments like embroidery or frills, you do like to embellish your outfits and accessories with buckle and stud details.

Comfortable and edgy combine

Being comfy and edgy aren’t mutually exclusive when it comes to rock style clothing.

Your style is predominantly casual, but with an edgy twist.

Mel @bagandaberet above (read her style interview here) layers her jewelry, and adds an edgy element to her outfit with her pointed booties.

You like a band tee

You’re happy to show off your musical tastes on your t-shirt. But you won’t wear a band tee just to look cool.

It also has to authentically match your taste.

Celebrities with a rock style personality

It goes without saying that plenty of celebrities have a rock chick style – probably because many of them are bona-fide rock chicks.

Celebrities with a rock style personality include Chrissy Hynde, Pink (who combines elements of urban style), Stevie Nicks (who combines her rock chick persona with bohemian styling), Madonna, the late Dolores O’Riordan, Courtney Love, Debbie Harry, Janet Jackson and Tina Turner

Designers you like if you love rock and roll clothing

If you have a rock style personality, there are plenty of designers who match your aesthetic.

Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen and ndreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood are good options to look out for at the major fashion shows when you are looking for inspiration.

How to dress like a rocker girl?

Below, we’ve put together a special capsule wardrobe especially for you if you love a rock chick style, with lots of clothes, shoes and accessories you could use to create your look this season.

Tops for the rock style personality

When choosing your rock style personality capsule wardrobe, look out for slogan and concert t-shirts which will remind you of the bands you have seen live. We love the Mick Jagger t-shirt (below).

A plaid or animal print shirt will also fit in well with your style, and it’s always good to have a white shirt in your closet to layer over or under everything from moto jackets to dresses. Also look out for black print tops.

Rock chick look jackets and coats

When it comes to jackets and coats for your style personality, the leather moto jacket is the one item your closet definitely can’t be without.

You could also add a denim jacket as well as looking at faux fur coats, and a black blazer for when you want to smarten up your jeans. Animal print and check will work well with the other clothes in your closet.

Rocker style jeans and pants

You probably have more jeans in your closet than you do skirts and dresses.

Good styles to look out for are dark denim, leather or coated jeans, animal print, striped, and utility pants.

Any of these could be dressed down with biker-style booties and your moto jacket, or up with heels and your blazer. You could also look out for print pants, including animal print and checked styles.

Rock and roll dresses and skirts

When it comes to dresses and skirts, you are unlikely to have anything too overtly feminine in your closet.

That’s not to say you don’t love a dress in darker shades or dark floral prints. You will simply style it with your moto jacket and boots.

Also look out for graphical prints and a classic leather skirt or dress. You could also look for tie-dye prints. Or, you can mix glamour with rocker chic by teaming sequins with leather and studs.

Rock and roll fashion shoes

Your shoes, and most importantly boots, help to define your style.

So, while you may still wear a floaty dress, you are likely to put a rock stamp on your look with your Dr. Martens boots or combat boots and moto jacket.

Styles with zips, studs and buckles will suit your style personality. Or, you could add a rock chick touch to classic pumps or boots by choosing a print.

Do you love layering unique accessories? Enjoy expressing your free spirit? Then embrace your inner flower child, style fearlessly, and dress for the bohemian style personality.

More than just a fashion trend, bohemian style is part of a way of life. In this article you will find out how to tell if boho style is for you as well as boho outfit inspiration and a capsule wardrobe updated for summer.

What is bohemian style?

The bohemian style is characterized by whimsical, floaty fabrics, funky patterns, and artful layering.

Bohemian style, also referred to as boho style, has always been an alternative style to the fashion trends of any given time. It incorporates ideas from around the world as well as from history.

It is a style which features long, loose, colorful clothing and is most associated with the peace and love hippie era. It is particularly linked with creative people such as artists, musicians and writers.

what are the traits of bohemian style?

Bohemian style is about freedom, with lots of relaxed, free-flowing silhouettes.

Signature elements of boho style

Key elements of boho style are long loose layers, tassels, fringing, natural fabrics, patchwork, paisley and plenty of jewelry.

Celebrities with a bohemian style

Bohemian style is truly timeless, but it has definitely enjoyed a revival in recent years.

Kate Hudson, Sienna Miller, Kate Moss, music superstars Janis Joplin and Stevie Nicks, and fashion icon Jane Birken are just a few of the famous poster girls for the bohemian, or boho chic, look.

They combine clothes in inventive and fearless ways and channel a romantic, free-spirited 60’s or 70’s sensibility.

Designers with a bohemian style

If you are naturally drawn to bohemian styling, some of the designers to take inspiration from include Missoni, Etro, Alanui, Cinq á Sept, Akris, Brunello Cucinelli, Melissa Odabash, Zimmerman, Ulla Johnson and Chloé.

How to tell if you have a bohemian style

If you feel you may have a bohemian style, but aren’t absolutely sure, you could take our fun style personality quiz to find out. You may find that you have one main style personality, but that you are also drawn to secondary styles.

Other signs that you have a bohemian style are…

1. Women with bohemian style don’t like to conform

Just like the rock style personality and the urban style personality, you don’t like to be a conformist. You prefer to express yourself in your own way.

2. You are probably creative

Not everyone who has a bohemian style, or elements of it, works in the creative industries, but there is probably a creative side to you, even if this comes out in your spare time or your hobbies rather than your day job.

Your outfits are a way of expressing that.

3. You like to be comfortable

Of course you want to be stylish, but you won’t be uncomfortable for your style. You like clothes that don’t restrict your movement. It’s unlikely we will be seeing you in a bodycon dress and heels any time soon.

Tips for dressing in a bohemian style

If you do love a boho way of dressing, below are some of the ways to get a boho chic look.

1. Layer your clothing

The key is to create a relaxed, free-spirited look and layers will help you to achieve the travelling gypsy look which inspired this style.

You can layer different prints and patterns, or you can keep your look simpler and just add some subtle boho touches.

2. Choose long, flowing pieces

The whole idea of boho style is that it is free and easy.

You shouldn’t wear anything that constricts you. Choose long, flowing maxi skirts and dresses, and loose tunics and peasant tops.

Mel @curvycartel above chooses a loose, peasant style dress that is perfect for the bohemian style personality. Wear with boots in cooler weather or sandals for summer.

Recreate her outfit with this similar dress (another option here) and boots.

3. Add plenty of JEWELRy

As well as layering your clothes, you can layer your accessories.

Opt for necklaces with tassels or coins as well as stacking your bracelets and wearing plenty of rings.

Also take a look at how to nail the layered necklace trend.

4. Think about the prints you use

Possibly more than any other style, the bohemian look can be defined by the prints you opt for. Look for heritage prints which have cultural significance, such as tribal, ikat, trellis, paisley and kilim patterns.

5. Choose natural colors

Just as you will want to choose fabrics which are natural, choose colors which are soft and muted or which can be found in nature. You could look at a palette featuring burgundies, mustards and russets, but you may also wish to take your inspiration from the oceans and add blues to your outfit choices.

6. Choose natural fabrics

Bohemian style is at one with nature, so you will want to choose natural fabrics whenever you can, such as cotton, linen, hemp, wool, leather and cheesecloth.

Elizabeth mixes her prints to create a boho look | 40plusstyle.com

Elizabeth @timeless_styling above (read her style interview here) opts for a linen poncho over her stripe pants.

Get her look with this similar poncho, pants, mules, earrings, bracelet and headband.

For more inspiration take a look at how to wear printed pants.

Why the bohemian style suits any body shape

With loose, forgiving layers, the bohemian style suits many body types.

The layers can add curves to a rectangular body shape, and can balance out a pear body shape with detailing, ruffles and dramatic necklines to draw attention to the upper body.

Add maxi dresses with uneven hemlines or dresses with bell sleeves to your capsule wardrobe. Layer vests, jackets, scarves and other elements over this foundation.

Look for vintage inspired patterns, velvets, ikat tribal prints and rich detailing to communicate a romantic, bohemian style.

Below is how to create your own bohemian capsule wardrobe.

Boho tops

Choose tops with interesting cuts, a relaxed fit, tribal, paisley or batik patterns, ruffles and unique hems.

Bell sleeves, embroidery or shirts made of unique materials like faux suede add instant bohemian style to even a basic outfit. Below, you can see the shapes, textures and prints you could choose to get a bohemian look.

Cardigans and jackets for your bohemian outfit

When looking for sweaters this season, try to find knitwear with tassel or tie detailing as well as bell sleeves and patterns.

You could opt for a short sweater to layer over longer tops, or create long lines with a long cardigan.

Choose jackets with stand-out details and unique shapes to layer over bohemian dresses, pants, and skirts.

Bohemian style wardrobe staples include kimono jackets, tassels and ties, shearling or suede vests for a bohemian rocker style, capes or ponchos, duster jackets and faux fur vests to layer.

Show off your bohemian style by choosing pants that really make a statement.

Add pants to your wardrobe that have offbeat or unusual details and materials.

Bell bottoms, embroidery, patchwork, faux leather or suede, or natural textures like gauze and linen add offbeat adventurous style to your wardrobe.

You are also likely to want some plain colors to offset your print tops.

Bohemian style dresses and skirts

When choosing skirts look for spirited details like waterfall hemlines, fringe, embroidery, crochet, and lace detailing. Tiered dresses will add a relaxed feel.

A hallmark of the boho style is to combine pieces in interesting and unexpected ways.

Try pairing a leather skirt with a delicate lace top. Wear a rugged shearling vest over a longer length feminine skirt, wear a crochet cover-up over your dress, or a tassel jacket with your skirt.

Bohemian chic boots and shoes

Choose substantial boots and shoes to offset the lighter floaty layers of the bohemian style if you are dressing for cooler weather.

Oiled leather boots work well with uneven hem maxi skirts and dresses.

For summer, choose sandals with substantial straps and contrasting textures, or lots of ties and tassels.

Look out for booties with details like grommets, and laces, and booties made of surprising materials like sumptuous velvet. You can even add some extra prints on your shoes.

Accessories to wear with your boho outfit

An easy, often affordable way to add bohemian style to your wardrobe is with artful, attention-grabbing accessories.

Wide brimmed and fedora hats and bold jewelry communicate a bohemian sensibility. Layer necklaces to add boho style to any simple outfit.

Choose unstructured bags in a slouch or hobo shape. Mix in details like colorful tassels, fringe and nubuck leather for an earthy vibe.

Try your hand at bohemian dressing by thinking creatively. Mix exotic patterns. Wear layers of long necklaces.

Try wearing long, statement-making earrings, wrap a tie-dyed scarf, or add a stack of ethnic inspired bracelets to your ensemble.

The history of bohemian style

If all of these styles resonate with you, I’m sure you will be fascinated by the origins of bohemian style, which refers to a way of dressing which is different from the mainstream at any point in time.

The first mention of the Bohemian movement was way back at the time of the French Revolution and ever since then, it has been a style associated with artists, creative types and those who wish to express their personality through their clothing. In the 60s, hippies made the boho look their own and this way of dressing will be forever synonymous with this decade and the one which came after.

Boho clothing stores

If you know that you have a bohemian style, where are the best places to shop? You probably pick up clothes and accessories when you travel, and also from vintage stores.

Here are some of the best stores for you to create your capsule bohemian closet.

What is the difference between boho and bohemian style?

Boho is simply a short form of bohemian. Just as in interiors, bohemian style in fashion tends to be more colorful, while boho-chic can also include plenty of neutrals, so thinking about a boho look is a great way to modernise your bohemian style.

What is bohemian style dress?

As you’ve seen in this article, bohemian style is all about a relaxed style of dressing that reflects your personality with plenty of textures and layers. So, don’t be afraid to have fun and experiment with your bohemian outfits.

Have you tried adding bohemian style elements to your own wardrobe?

Do you love the classic style looks of Audrey Hepburn, Kate Winslet or Princess Diana? They all have a classic style personality.

Many of the world’s most recognizable beauties choose a classic wardrobe style and for good reason.

A classic wardrobe lasts, rarely goes out of style, and a few well-selected pieces can take you just about anywhere at any time.

How to be sure you have a classic style personality

Are you certain of your style? Do you know you have a classic style personality.

If you aren’t 100% sure, you could try this fun style personality quiz. Most women find they have one main style personality but are drawn to elements of others.

Here are some other ways to determine if you have a classic style personality…

As a classic style personality you prefer timeless looks

While you are aware of the trends, you prefer classic looks which are totally timeless. The clothes, shoes and accessories you wear look stylish year after year.

Beth wears a striped jacket and white pants | 40plusstyle.com

Beth @styleatacertainage above (read her style interview here) chooses a classic neutral outfit and tops it with a striped cardigan.

She is wearing a jacket from J.Crew and flats from Kate Spade New York. Check out this similar top, pants, bag and earrings.

You don’t like throwaway fashion

You aren’t one to hit the shops every weekend. You would rather have fewer, quality pieces in your closet that you know will last you for seasons.

If this sounds like you, you might also like to take a look at our article on how to do more with less.

You always look elegant and well put together

You aren’t bothered about being the trendiest person in the room.

But you do always look elegant, refined and your outfits are well put together.

That’s partly because your outfit choices suit any occasion and partly because you tend to gravitate towards well-cut pieces in good quality fabric.

You tend to have classic colors in your closet

If I opened your closet, I would likely find a lot of neutrals, but you do like classic shades such as red.

You also like classic patterns like polka dots, leopard print and stripes. I’m unlikely to find more unusual hues such as orange or purple.

Also, if I were to take a peak into your wardrobe, I would probably see you have many of the items from our list of 33 essentials every woman over 40 should own.

What are the characteristics of classic style?

How to dress to look classic?

Below, we give you lots of tips so you can dress in a classic way. You’re thinking about timeless, classic shapes, natural fabrics, neutral colors, not being captivated by trends, and taking inspiration from celebrities who have a classic style. You’ll also find classic style has lots in common with old money style.

How to develop a classic style?

If you want to develop a classic style, or you aren’t sure it’s for you, then start off by adding some classic pieces into your wardrobe and combine them with your existing outfits. For example, a trench coat goes with everything, or a classic white shirt will look great with your jeans. You don’t have to start building your closet from scratch to change up your style.

Below are tips on how to build your own classic capsule wardrobe

If you have a classic style and you really want to hone your closet, here’s how.

You may also like to read our ultimate guide to creating a capsule wardrobe that works best for you.

Start with a neutral palette

Black, navy, gray or tan work as an anchor color to build your classic capsule wardrobe.

Choose wardrobe staples in one of these neutrals and build your capsule wardrobe from there.

Choose classic shapes

A classic capsule is built from tailored classics that flatter the body.

One of the best investments is a fitted blazer; a flattering style that works on just about any size or body shape.

Select a blazer style jacket in your chosen neutral shade.

Make sure the blazer buttons comfortably and doesn’t pull across the bust line, and it’s loose enough through the arms and back to allow ease of movement as well as allow you to comfortably layer a shirt or sweater underneath.

A stylish pair of cropped pants are another classic wardrobe staple. A flat front style with a side zip is flattering for most body types.

They work with flats, booties or heels, and can transition easily from daytime to evening with a simple change of jewelry or shoes.

Emms in red pencil dress and pumps | 40plusstyle.com

Emms @beautifuleveryday_uk above shows how you can still add a twist to classic style. Her red dress is beautiful, classic and timeless, but the asymmetric neckline gives it a little bit of an edge.

She is wearing a dress from L.K.Bennett. Check out this similar pair of pumps and handbag.

Choose fabrics that can work year round

If you’re a classic style personality, I’m sure you agree with me when I talk about why I have a problem wearing synthetic fabrics.

A crisp cotton poplin shirt can be worn knotted with a pair of cropped pants for summer, or worn underneath a sweater and jacket for fall.

A cashmere or lightweight wool sweater can work during winter months when layered with other shirts and jackets.

Invest in a few high quality timeless pieces

It may actually save money in the long run to invest in a few well made pieces that will work for years to come.

A leather or suede jacket in a classic shape, a wool overcoat, trench coat and merino or cashmere wool sweaters are all pieces that will stand the test of time.

Celebrities with a classic style personality

Are you drawn to the style of the celebrities below? If so, you are likely to have a classic style personality yourself.

Celebrities with timeless style | 40plusstyle.com

Kate Middleton (who also loves some preppy styles), Princess Diana, Kate Winslet, Audrey Hepburn, Victoria Beckham and Angelina Jolie (although she combines elements of the minimal style personality) All have a classic style personality.

Some designers you may like to take inspiration from if you have a classic style personality are Ralph Lauren, Kate Spade New York and Chanel.

A capsule wardrobe for the classic fashion personality

Now that you are thinking about your style and what will work best for your every day outfits, you will find all the tops, bottoms, shoes and accessories below that the classic style personality needs to build a capsule closet.

The classic style capsule below has been especially updated for 2023.

Tops with a classic look

Start with a classic white shirt that you can layer underneath jackets and sweaters.

Add a silk blouse that can be dressed up with slacks or worn with jeans for a more casual look.

Choose a cashmere or quality wool sweater and think about patterns which won’t date when choosing tops and blouses.

When selecting knits, select styles that are not too clingy, especially if you tend to carry weight in your stomach area.

A longer cardigan sweater can help camouflage a tummy area without clinging, and cover your arms when wearing a sleeveless top or dress.

If you carry weight around your hips, avoid sweaters that hit above your hip, which can draw attention to that area and make you appear fuller.

Sweaters that fall at or below mid hip work well on most women and flatter lots of body types.

Wrap styles and timeless prints like stripes will also work for you.

Recreate her outfit with this similar shirt, denim skirt, slingback pumps and sunglasses.

Jackets and coats to add to your classic clothing capsule

Make sure the jacket fits properly, but not too snug.

Jacket and coat styles to give you a classic look include a blazer, trench and moto jacket. For cooler weather, look for a longline, belted wool coat. For warmer days, you could also wear a shorter, Chanel-inspired cardigan.

Pants and Jeans for classic fashion style

When selecting pants and jeans think about shapes, shades and patterns that won’t date.

While you may find that skinny jeans are “in” one season and “out” the next, a pair of bootcut jeans will stand the test of time.

You could also add black pants, white jeans and a pair of pants in a subtle pattern such as a check, polka dot or stripe. Plus, don’t shy away from color. Just make sure you pick a color that is always on trend.

Dresses and Skirts to create classic outfits

Invest in a classic dress. A sheath or wrap style are both classic shapes that will quickly become wardrobe staples.

Pair with heels for work or dressy events and tights paired with booties for more casual days. You could also wear with wedge or flat sandals, or white sneakers for weekends.

Select skirts in a length that flatters you best (an inch or two above the knee is flattering for most women). Stay away from anything too tight or too baggy. A pencil skirt or a-line is a timeless shape.

Shoes to go with your classic style clothing

As with your clothes, you will want to make sure that your shoes are classic, timeless and versatile.

A pair of classic heels, some black booties for cooler months and some flats, including a pair of classic white sneakers, should take you through most situations. For warm months, block heeled sandals will go with all of your outfits.

Accessories to add to your classic wear

Add color to your classic capsule wardrobe with tops, jewelry and accessories. Or layer other neutrals to add texture and interest.

Pair your basics with statement necklaces, scarves, and bold accessories to add emphasis and personality. If it’s too warm for a coat, you could always add a wrap to your accessories to cover your arms.

A style that’s as hard to pin down as you are! Street or urban style develops on the streets of the world’s major cities.

It is constantly evolving, but there are elements of urban or street style which remain pretty constant.

Just like the Eurochic style personality, it is hard to define, but you will recognize urban style when you see it.

So what is urban style?

Urban or street style tends to be a mix of casual and hip, and it picks up on what is happening in the world at any given time.

It is about sub-culture rather than major trends and also has its roots in sports and music movements such as skateboarding, hip hop and rap. Many big-name designer brands are consistently inspired by an urban look.

This is a style which is often more prevalent among younger generations, but there are always exceptions, and a 40+ women can rock urban style just as well (or better) than her younger counterparts. Just ask Gwen Stefani!

If you aren’t sure what street style is, some examples (both current and from years gone by) include punk, goth, grunge, mod and hip hop.

How to tell if you have an urban style personality

If you are a non-conformist then there are probably at least some elements of urban style in your closet.

However, most women don’t just have one style they are drawn to. They also pick and choose from other styles. That’s what makes everyone’s style unique.

If you aren’t sure what your style is, you can take our fun style personality quiz to find out.

Here are just some of the ways to tell if you have an urban style personality…

You don’t like to conform

Mixing prints and patterns to create an urban look | 40plusstyle.com

While you definitely have your finger on the pulse when it comes to trends, your style tends to be about being subversive rather than conforming to all of the trends seen on the fashion show runways.

Mel @bagandaberet above (read her style interview here) always looks fabulous. Here, she evokes a punk era while bringing her look bang up-to-date.

Steal her look with this similar tee, blazer, plaid skirt and lace-up high sneakers.

You won’t compromise on comfort

Feeling comfortable in your clothes is important to you. You won’t wear anything that digs, pinches or otherwise constricts you.

Dawn Lucy @fashionshouldbefun above (read her style interview here)

Recreate her outfit with this similar top (another option here), pants, sandals, handbag and earrings.

I probably won’t see you in pastels

If I were to open your closet, I probably won’t see a lot of color, particularly rich jewel shades or pastel hues.

You gravitate towards black, khaki and dark neutrals.

You like to mix it up

Even if you are attending a formal event, you like to mix formal with casual.

You might wear a khaki jacket over your ballgown or choose pants instead of a dress.

Abi in hoodie, coat, leggings and sneakers | 40plusstyle.com

Abi @stealmystyle40 above gives her outfit an urban feel by opting for an oversized look and adding a cap.

Check out this similar hoodie, coat, leggings, sneakers (another option here), tote (another option here) and cap.

You wear your heart on your sleeve

Or, on your t-shirt at least.

While you may not necessarily love a lot of color, you do like a good logo, slogan, moto or print. Just so long as it’s either meaningful or it’s from your favorite band or brand.

Celebrities with an urban fashion personality

Gwen Stefani is, arguably, the most famous 40+ woman with a very recognizable urban style.

Fellow singer Pink also loves urban fashion (although she adds more than a touch of rock chick).

There are also plenty of times when we’ve seen Amal Clooney (whose style tends to be Eurochic) don an urban look such as ripped jeans, leather jackets or khaki jumpsuits.

So, you can add elements of this style to your own outfits for a current look.

It might only be wearing your sneakers with your dress, or adding a beanie hat to your jeans and blazer outfit, but it could give you a more youthful vibe.

Celebrities with a STREET/URBAN style personality | 40plusstyle.com

Urban T-shirts and tops

When it comes to your tops, you like slouchy styles that aren’t too fitted. You find printed tees and asymmetry attractive, but you might also add some subtle glamour by opting for a one-shoulder style.

Your closet will usually also feature a white shirt because this is such a versatile piece you can wear with jeans, under dungarees or a jumpsuit, or over a dress.

Jackets and coats for the urban style personality

Your coats tend to be shorter jackets rather than long ones, but that’s not to say you can’t rock a full-length coat with your Dr. Martens or sneakers.

You will be drawn to moto, bomber and denim styles, as well as prints which have a nod to the punk era rather than being too classic.

You’re also a big fan of a slouchy sweater. You prefer an oversized knit or hoodie rather than anything too tight.

Urban jeans and pants

Jeans are a very important wardrobe staple and you are likely to have several pairs in your closet.

You are drawn to distressed jeans as well as gray denim, but also like comfy cargo pants. A pair of black skinny jeans or leggings will also go with most items in your wardrobe.

Dresses, jumpuits and skirts for the urban style personality

While jeans tend to be your go-to closet staple, you also like to mix up your outfits by wearing jumpsuits, dresses or skirts.

You are unlikely to opt for anything too “girly”. Or, if you do, you will offset that with more casual shoes or accessories such as chunky boots or sneakers.

Shoes to wear with your urban wear

Two classic shoes which will never go out of style for an urban style personalty are a pair of Dr. Martens and a pair of converse high tops.

But, you could also try booties or over-the-knee boots with your dresses and jeans. Cage-style sandals will give your outfit an edge.

Accessories to go with your urban clothes

The most iconic street style accessory has to be the beanie hat.

This gives everything from jeans to dresses an air of haven’t-tried-too-hard nonchalance.

But, you could always add a pair of sunglasses and some bright red lipstick, like Gwen Stefani, to add a little touch of glamour. Gwen likes to wear Revlon’s Love that Red.

For bags, you prefer a hands-free approach rather than a tote or a satchel, so you could choose a backpack or a crossbody bag.

Do you love shapes and structure in your outfits? Do you like unusual and bold geometrical jewelry? Do you admire the inimitable style of Narnia actress Tilda Swinton? If you are drawn to this type of architectural fashion, then you may well be an architectural style personality.

If you aren’t sure what your style personality is, you can take this fun quiz to find out.

You are likely to have one dominant style personality, and then a second style personality that you are drawn to. As an architectural style personality, you are likely to also find yourself attracted to elements of minimalist and classic dressing.

How to tell if you are an architectural style personality

1. You pay attention to the structure of clothing

You aren’t too keen on floaty, flowing fabrics. Instead you like your clothing to have structure. You are likely to opt for fabric which gives some shape to your look rather than a smock style, for example. You may also create shape with the patterns on your clothes.

Diane in black and gold outfit | 40plusstyle.com

Diana @dianagabrielnyc above (read her style interview here) adds circular shapes with her top and necklace, squares with her sunglasses and ring, and she creates structure with her jacket.

Check out this similar top, cape (another option here), pants, booties, necklace and sunglasses.

2. You choose heel shapes which are unusual

As an architectural style personality, one of the ways to show off your taste is in your shoes. You like heels which have architectural detailing such as a square or cone shape, twist or cut-out detailing.

Luckily, you’ll find plenty of choice this season, as architectural heels are one of the key shoe trends for summer 2023.

3. You like geometric jewelry

You aren’t a fan of whimsical jewelry featuring florals or soft shapes. Instead, you are likely to opt for contemporary pieces which have geometric shapes. Your bracelet of choice will be a cuff style

Dayle wearing an asymmetrical sweater and statement accessories | 40plusstyle.com

Dayle @artfulcitystyle above (read her style interview here)n chooses cuffed bracelets, a statement necklace and triangular earrings. She also opts for an asymmetric hemline and voluminous pants.

Steal her look with this similar sweater (another option here), pants, booties, necklace, bracelet and earrings.

4. You may also have architectural hair

If you have an architectural style personality, you are unlikely to have loose, flowing locks. Your hair is a reflection of your style, so you may opt for an asymmetric cut, a bob or blunt fringe. Or you may wear your hair back.

Celebrities with an architectural style personality

You’re in very stylish company when it comes to celebrities who have an architectural style personality. Tilda Swinton and Cate Blanchett are two famous examples.

Both women don’t tend to like wearing floaty, bohemian pieces. Instead, they opt for structured items and like to mix it up a bit on the red carpet. You are just as likely to see them wearing a tuxedo as a dress.

They are also drawn to minimalist and classic styling, but like to give their looks an architectural twist. So, you might see them wearing a dress with structured shoulders, an oversized collar, a funnel neck, a cape or a dress with an unusual neckline.

Read our ultimate guide to creating a capsule wardrobe that works best for you.

Architectural style personality tops

The architectural style personality will usually have a white or striped shirt in their closet because of its versatility. You can wear with a tuxedo, or under a dress.

You will also want to look out for tops with structured necklines such as a funnel neck and asymmetric detailing.

Get her look with this similar high low shirt, skirt, boots, necklace (another option here) and earrings.

Architectural style personality jackets and coats

You are likely to want to keep your coat in a neutral shade. But, having said that, you won’t rule out any color provided that it suits your style. A primary color such as red will go beautifully with your monochrome pieces or you could look at a more unusual, unexpected shade.

Boyfriend blazers, tuxedo styles, trenches and moto jackets with zips and asymmetry will appeal to you.

The architectural style personality is often more likely to wear pants than skirts and dresses.

Look out for wide-legged pants, tuxedo styles with stripes on the side of the legs and pants with geometric patterns. Striped pants are particularly on trend this summer. Graphic prints will also go well with your style personality.

Shoes are another great way to show off your style personality. Look out for shoes which come in a beautiful metallic color such as a burnished bronze, or in crisp neutrals.

Also, shoes which have unusual style detailing will appeal to you. Look out for heels which have a cone shape, or are circular, transparent or have a shape that is different from the norm. Peep-toe booties and D’Orsay styles, where the side is partially cut out, will also look good on you.

Architectural style personality accessories

The old saying goes that the devil is in the detail. That’s definitely true when it comes to adding accessories.

A classic architectural style combination would be a white shirt and contemporary, geometric jewelry like in my outfit above.

Sylvia wearing an asymmetrical shirt and geometric jewelry | 40plusstyle.com

similar tunic, pants, booties, necklace, ring and earrings

I consider myself a mix of architectural, Eurochic and a natural style personality. I love geometric and architectural pieces but I also need comfort and natural materials.

One of my favorite ways to add a bit of architecture to my looks is contemporary jewelry and asymmetry.

While other style personalities might opt for classic styles of teardrop-shaped drop earrings or jewelry and scarves featuring florals, you will prefer geometric, contemporary shapes.

You will also like some structure in your bags. While you like to carry a tote, you opt for pieces with contemporary styling, or some stitching which adds shape.

If your favorite style icon is Ali MacGraw in Love Story, then you almost certainly have a preppy style personality.

An all-American style which is inspired by prep school attire, this is a way of dressing which can transcend seasons, and generations.

What is preppy style?

So, first, what exactly is preppy style? This collegiate-inspired style is casual in the main, but that doesn’t mean that your closet will be totally full of denim and jeans.

You also love to wear skirts and dresses as well as classic blouses with pussy bows or Peter Pan collars.

How to tell if you have a preppy style personality

A preppy style has a lot in common with classic style so you may well find that you are drawn to elements of both. It can also draw inspiration from natural style.

As a preppy style personality, you love cozy knits, checks and stripes and prefer to wear flat shoes and natural fibers, including leather as well as wool.

If you aren’t sure what your style is, you could take this fun style personality quiz to see which style you are most drawn to.

You appreciate clean-cut styles

We won’t find you in distressed jeans or a moto jacket. Instead you prefer a blazer, a v-neck sweater and a classic jeans style like bootcut or straight-leg.

A style guide and capsule wardrobe for the PREPPY style personality | 40plusstyle.com

If you do love a preppy style aesthetic, you’re in luck as preppy style and check prints are very much on trend at the moment. Carmen @carmen_gimeno above slings a sweater over her shoulders to add even more preppy style to her check suit.

Steal her look with this similar blazer, pants, sweater, sneakers, handbag, belt and sunglasses.

You aren’t trend obsessed

It’s much more important to you to have a good closet of essentials than to shop for a statement piece each season.

For more inspiration take a look at the 33 essentials every woman over 40 should have in her closet.

You have a lot of stripes

If there’s one pattern you have in your closet, it will be stripes. That’s because as well as being college-inspired, the preppy look also has a nod to the nautical.

Kim @kimair above (read her style interview here) layers her shirt under her dress.

Recreate her outfit with this similar polo dress, shirt, sneakers, clutch, earrings and sunglasses.

You love a dress or shirt with a collar

While you’ll wear t-shirts and boat necks too, collared clothing styles such as the peter pan collar, classic button-down shirt or shirt dress and the polo style are among your favorite looks.

You don’t have a preference for pants or skirts

While preppy style is generally comfortable, you are just as at home in a pair of pants as you are in a skirt and you probably have equal numbers of each in your closet.

Preppy style women

celebrities with a preppy style | 40plusstyle.com

The preppy style is one that has been adopted by many younger celebrities in recent years, including Emma Watson and Olivia Palermo.

But preppy style clothing is also loved by Alexa Chung (above, right, who combines preppy with some bohemian), who is in her fourth decade, and Gwyneth Paltrow, who combines preppy with classic style. Reese Witherspoon is also often seen sporting a preppy look.

Kate Middleton also often dresses in a preppy style both off-duty and on. She loves blazers and pussy bow necklines.

Plus, there are plenty of women from years gone by who could show them all a thing or two. Fashion designer Lilly Pulizter epitomized preppy style, whereas no-one wore a twinset better than Jackie O or Grace Kelly.

Designers you like if you love preppy fashion

Designer labels' preppy fashion | 40plusstyle.com

Ralph LaurenPaul SmithStella McCartney

As the preppy style is really an all-American look, your preference tends to be for American designers including Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger and Thom Browne. Gucci and Prada have also increasingly been fans of the preppy style in recent seasons, and Paul Smith and Stella McCartney are also definitely worth looking at for inspiration.

All of these designers will appeal to your love of a clean-cut, classic style with a little hint of “geek” chic.

Preppy clothes and accessories

Now, let’s take a look at some of the best clothing, shoe and accessory styles to get a preppy look. Plus, read on and you’ll find a capsule wardrobe especially put together for the preppy style personality this summer.

Tops to get the perfect preppy look

The preppy style personality really goes for two main options when it comes to tops.

You will want to make sure you have plenty of casual options in your closet, including a classic polo neck and Breton-striped top.

But, you also like ladylike, dressy blouses and will often choose to dress up your jeans with pretty blouses featuring Peter Pan collars or pussy bow detailing.

Preppy sweaters

A classic sweater and a cardigan is definitely vital to achieving a preppy style.

For a true preppy look, choose a v-neck and look out for details such as cable knit as well as varsity or cricket-style stripes. You could also look for a sleeveless sweater to wear over your shirt.

Preppy style outerwear

For transitional months or cooler evenings, you can invest in a padded, yet fitted, vest which you can wear over your shirts and v-neck sweaters.

You will also want to add a classic blazer as well as a quilted coat. Plus, you could think about adding a classic pattern such as plaid. For winter choose a warm duffle coat with a toggle fastening.

Jeans and pants for the preppy style personality

When choosing jeans and pants, you won’t be looking for the very latest hem style or for jeans with holes in them.

Like the rest of your look, you like a clean cut look which could transcend decades.

You will want a classic jeans style as well as looking out for options with patterns such as checks and for pants which have a defined crease. A sailor style will also appeal to you.

Preppy dresses and skirts

You will probably have an equal number of pants to skirts if we were to take a look in your closet.

Look out for styles featuring pleats which will go perfectly with your Peter Pan collars. As a preppy style, you could opt for a shorter skirt length if you are confident about your legs.

You can always wear a shorter skirt with opaque tights. Or you could choose a knee-length or midi option. Choose dresses with collars, full skirts, stripes and pleats.

Preppy shoes

Like the rest of your look, your shoes will be in very classic styles. They will also, usually, be mainly flat.

You aren’t too keen on heels and you definitely don’t like to be uncomfortable. Instead, look out for loafers with bows or tassels, a pair of brogues or Oxfords and flat knee-high boots for the cooler months. For summer, you could look for sneakers or boat shoes. For more formal occasions, you might like Mary Janes, either flats or with a heel.

Accessories to go with your preppy clothes

When it comes to accessories, you like to be understated rather than flamboyant.

You love a classic satchel, some well-made leather gloves which will last you for years and, of course, a long wool scarf. Headbands are particularly on-trend right now and are a key component of preppy style.

Your jewelry will be tasteful and understated, like the rest of your wardrobe, so you might only choose to add a pair of diamond or pearl stud earrings and a watch for your day-to-day outfits.

The Eurochic look is one of those styles that is hard to define. But, you know it when you see it.

You will see the Eurochic style as you sit having a coffee at the airport, or you watch the buzz of the people going by and spot a woman who looks totally at home in her surroundings, yet also stands out from the crowd.

European outfits: A mix of styles

You are likely to find that you are drawn to more than one style personality. That is what makes your own style unique, and by combining elements of your main style personality with the other styles you are drawn to, you can create a style which is uniquely yours.

Because Eurochic style is a blend of the classic and the edgy, you are also likely to find yourself attracted to minimalist, architectural, classic, and street/urban styling.

How to know if you have a Eurochic style?

If you aren’t sure about what style personality you are, you can take this fun style personality quiz to find out. Below are more ways to tell if you have a Eurochic style:

1. It’s hard to describe.

It is difficult to pin down exactly what the Eurochic style is, but it is seen on women who seem to look effortlessly stylish and hip.

2. You like to combine unexpected pieces together

If you have a Eurostyle, you like to combine more expensive timeless pieces with less expensive high street options. The way you put them together looks very sophisticated.

Eugenia wears a denim suit | 40plusstyle.com

Eugenia @theeageofgrace above (read her style interview here) opts for a designer bag with her denim suit. You could easily mix and match items here as separates, and wear the pants with a white shirt and blazer, for example.

Recreate her outfit with this similar denim blazer, jeans, pumps, handbag and sunglasses.

3. You are aware of trends but don’t always wear them

You exude a cool elegance and look stylish but understated. You will always be aware of what is currently on-trend and you might incorporate these trends into your closet, but it’s more important to you to find pieces which are well-made and well-cut, and which fit you perfectly.

4. You like neutral shades

You prefer neutral shades which coordinate with the other pieces in your outfit. You don’t like anything too gaudy.

Rita @ritapalazzi above (read her style interview here) adds a little boho style to her Europchic outfit with the print of her shirt.

Get her look with this similar blouse, vest, skirt, booties, crossbody bag and earrings.

5. You don’t buy on impulse

You’re very unlikely to buy pieces on impulse, but you do like to add items to your closet whenever you travel so that your outfits are totally unlike those of anyone else.

European fashion

While you may have bought the pieces in your closet anywhere in the world, your style looks as if it has been honed in Europe.

You would look equally at home in any of the cities in Europe, whether visiting Milan, Paris, Rome or London, or strolling the streets of Capri.

Also take a look at these French fashion secrets to steal, and how to style yourself like an Italian woman for extra inspiration.

Celebrities with European style

Celebrities with European style | 40plusstyle.com

Celebrities with enviable eurochic style include Catherine Deneuve, Carla Bruni, Marion Cotillard, Brigitte Bardot, Jane Birkin and Juliette Binoche.

You will see that they don’t necessarily seem to have to have a lot of pieces in their closet as they concentrate on quality and style.

While they are likely to have plenty of designer names in their wardrobes, they don’t like showing off their labels. They would consider that to be tacky.

Now, let’s take a look at some clothing, shoes and accessories you could put together this summer if you have a Eurochic style.

Eurochic style tops

As you like to concentrate on quality over quantity, you will want to make sure that your tops, as well as the rest of your closet, can be worn in many ways.

You are drawn to tops with have a structural element to them, so you may opt for some draping or asymmetry, or choose cropped tops you can layer over longer pieces. You will tend to have more neutral tops in your closet, but will choose the odd pattern or brighter shade too, particularly if it has an abstract or geometric element to it.

European clothing style: pants

The emphasis with the Eurochic style personality tends to be on tops, although you might choose to add an element of the unusual in your style with pants in a deep color.

Most of the pants in your wardrobe will be classic styles you can wear in a number of different ways. But, you will make sure they still have a trend-led element. So, you might choose a pair of wide-legged jeans or cropped flares instead of going for a straight-legged option

European style dress ideas, jumpsuits & skirts

You are likely to be drawn to a number of different dress and skirt options. But, they all have things in common. You might look for asymmetrical elements such as a dipped hemline or flattering ruching. You will also look for quality fabrics such as silk or linen mixes.

Eurochic style shoes

Again, your shoes take elements of classic style and add a certain je ne sais quai. So, you may choose what would otherwise be a classic ankle boot, but opt for a style in a metallic shade or with an open toe.

You might take elements of a certain trend, such as snakeskin print, but you apply it to a classic shape. Metallic shades and sculptural heels will also add interest.

Eurochic style accessories

As with the rest of your wardrobe, your accessories are well thought out to make sure that you can not only elevate your look, but that you can mix and match.

Rather than a classic, structured tote, you are likely to be attracted to a piece which has some slouch to it, in a quality fabric. Your jewelry is likely to be contemporary and geometric rather than a style you might see as more “old-fashioned”..

How do you define glamorous style?

It can be thought of as a loud-over-the-top style with plenty of bling. But, to us, glamour is more than that.

Glamorous style is more about being able to balance that glitzy side of your style personality without ever venturing into looking tacky.

It’s about still looking sophisticated but with extra pizzazz.

How about you? How would you describe a glamorous style? Let me know in the comments at the bottom.

How to know if you have a glamorous style personality

If you have a glamorous style personality, I’m sure you know it.

Not just because of the reaction you cause when you walk into a room, but also because you will probably admit you are “high maintenance” when it comes to your fashion and beauty regime.

It may be that glamorous is your main style personality, but you are also drawn to others. For example, you may also take elements of the romantic style personality when creating your outfits.

If you aren’t sure, you can take this fun style personality quiz to find out.

If you have a glam style personality…

You like to make an entrance

If you have a glamorous style personality, you are unlikely to be a shrinking violet. When you enter the room, you have a certain presence.

Boma wears a glamorous pink outfit | 40plusstyle.com

Boma @mrs.gaf above opts for an all-pink look that is sure to get her noticed for all the right reasons.

Recreate her outfit with this similar blazer dress, bag (another option here) and pumps.

You will occasionally forgo comfort for style

Unlike style personalities such as the natural style personality, who would definitely rather be comfortable over all else, you will sometimes be a little uncomfortable with your style.

You tend to like wearing heels if heading to dinner or a party, even if your feet are a little sore at the end of the night.

Accessories are important to you

You don’t feel fully dressed without accessorizing.

You’re likely to have an extensive collection of handbags, statement jewelry, sunglasses, hats and scarves, and you don’t keep them for special occasions.

Patricia in a navy and beige outfit | 40plusstyle.com

Patricia @patriciaafricaiglesias above (read her style interview here) elevates her outfit with her accessories and a pop of red lipstick.

Get her look with this similar blazer, dress, pumps, bag, belt and sunglasses.

Read more about the must-have accessories on our article on the 10 essential fashion accessories every woman should own.

You’re not afraid of color or print

If I opened your closet, I may find quite a bit of black and some white, but you love other hues too.

Rather than the pastel shades of the romantic style personality, you love rich, jewel-like colors as well as dramatic prints such as leopard print and bold florals.

You also love texture

As well as beautiful colors, you also love texture in your outfits including sequins, velvet, lace, leather, cashmere and faux fur.

Cathy wears velvet pants | 40plusstyle.com

Cathy @themiddlepageblog above (read her style interview here) opts for a pair of glamorous, wide leg velvet pants.

She is wearing a blouse from EVEREVE, pants from Ulla Johnson and sandals from L’AGENCE (another option here). Check out this similar belt, shoulder bag, necklace and sunglasses to complete the look.

You probably have more evening wear than daywear

Plus, you’re not afraid to wear it during the day. So you might go for a glitzy shirt with jeans, or a sequin skirt with a cashmere sweater.

Your favorite designers

Glamorous runway looks | 40plusstyle.com

Dolce & GabbanaVersaceChristian Dior

You love not only the styles and ideas on the runways for the major fashion shows, but you also love the glamour surrounding the Paris, London, Milan and New York fashion weeks.

Designers to look out for if you’re looking for inspiration on the catwalks include Dolce & Gabbana, Versace and Christian Dior.

Glamorous women with the same style personality as you

Celebrities with glamorous style personalities | 40plusstyle.com

As a glamorous style personality, you’re likely to be drawn to the glamour of Hollywood, particularly from days gone by.

Celebrities with a glamorous style personality include Joan Collins, Sharon Osbourne, Monica Bellucci, Dita von Teese and Catherine Zeta-Jones, Beyoncé and Naomi Campbell, who combines her dramatic style with some elements from the classic style personality.

Tops for the glamorous style personality

Look out for beautiful tops featuring sequins, jewel colors, lace and animal print.

But, don’t forget a classic white shirt. This will allow you to wear lots of items such as a sequin skirt, or leather pants during the daytime without looking “overdressed”.

Jackets and coats for the glamorous style personality

A classic black blazer or white will suit the glamorous style personality as well as the classic style personality.

You’re also likely to be drawn to Chanel-style jackets which end on the waist or Balmain style double breasted blazers. As a double-breasted style can add the illusion of width, the key is to look for buttons that narrow as you get down to the waist, giving a more flattering effect.

Jeans and pants for the glamorous style personality

Although you have a glamorous style personality, that does not mean that elements from other styles won’t fit into your closet.

A pair of embellished or coated jeans can look very glam worn with a blazer or sequins and a pair of high heels.

Also try print jeans, leather pants and tuxedo-style trousers. You may also want to look for tactile, glamorous materials such as satin or silk, or to make a style statement with wide, palazzo style pants which will appeal to your sense of theater.

Glamorous dresses, jumpsuit and skirt ideas

It is likely that you have a lot of skirts and dresses in your closet – possibly outnumbering pants and jeans.

Lace, sequins and prints will look lovely.

Plus, you could always look out for glamorous jumpsuits rather than sticking to skirts and dresses.

If you love to look feminine and pretty, and you wouldn’t go out without looking groomed, you may well have a romantic style personality.

We’re all individuals though, so you’ll find that while you have one dominant style personality that you are most drawn to, you are also attracted to elements from other style personalities.

You may, for example find that you have a natural style but like to add a touch of romance with some floral prints.

If you aren’t sure what your style personality is you can take this fun quiz to find out.

So what are the elements of the romantic style personality?

1. You dress to express your femininity

Being practical or comfortable is not always your top priority. Even when you are dressing casually, you are likely to add a romantic element such as a touch of lace or a pretty print.

2. You are attracted to beautiful pieces

As a romantic style personality, your eye is drawn to pretty pieces and patterns, including tactile fabrics.

3. You like embellishments on your clothes

Your clothes may feature frills, ruffles, bows, pearls, embroidery, and lace.

4. You like soft colors

You are drawn to pastel shades and other soft colors.

Sheree @shesheshow chooses a brighter pink and “softens” the look with raffia accessories and her graphic print jacket.

She is wearing a dress, cardigan, sandals and clutch from Chico’s.

5. You Like To Be Well-Groomed.

Even if you are just running errands, you like to have some make-up on, even if it’s just a slick of pink lipstick.

Style Personalities

Like other style personalities, you are likely to find you have one main style personality, but that you are drawn to a secondary or even a third personality.

As a romantic style personality, you may also be drawn to elements of the glamorous style personality and be attracted to glamorous, figure-hugging outfits as well as deeper jewel colors.

In general though, your style tends to be softer and more romantic rather than overtly glamorous.

Easy ways to add some romantic style to any outfit

Maybe a romantic style already resonates with you or maybe you want to dabble a little with a more romantic look, although you feel that you have a different style personality, such as classic or glamorous, for example.

Below are 5 simple and stylish ways you could add a touch of romanticism to your existing closet.

If you aren’t sure about color, always go for pastel!

Simply adding a pastel-colored top to your jeans is a great way to get a romantic look which is still casual. The Blank NYC jacket (below) is suede, and comes in a good range of soft shades, neutrals and brighter hues. Reviewers say it is well made and classy. They advise going up one size.

Look for feminine shapes

If you have a romantic style, you may wish to emphasize your waist and your feminine figure. Look out for styles that nip in at the waist, such as peplums, fit and flares and belted styles. Anything with a bow like the Madewell top (below) will add a touch of romanticism.

Every detail counts

It’s really all about the little, and the not-so-little, details when it comes to romantic style. Look out for florals and swirling prints as well as embroidery and crochet.

You could also think about adding a little lace to your t-shirt to give a simple jeans and tee look a romantic vibe.

Ulla Johnson Sofia Lace Detail Linen & Cotton Top | 40plusstyle.com

Choose lace

Lace is often associated with weddings, so it’s no wonder than opting for lace can immediately give you a more romantic look.

However, you don’t have to save lace for special occasions. You could add a touch of lace to more casual outfits by wearing lace on your accessories or you could choose a lace dress and then wear day-to-day by teaming with casual sneakers and a denim jacket.

Add some flowers

Another easy way to add romance is to choose floral prints and patterns, or opt for accessories in floral shapes or styles. You could always keep the rest of your look fairly neutral and add a romantic touch with your shows. Reviewers say the floral sandals (below) are comfy and add a little height without being painful to wear.

A romantic style capsule for you

Now you’re thinking about whether a romantic style sums up your own style and how to add some romance to your looks, let’s put together a full romantic capsule wardrobe for you.

Below, you’ll find all the tops, bottoms, dresses, shoes and accessories you need to evoke a romantic style this spring and summer.

At the end of the article, you’ll see all of the clothes and accessories put together in one capsule wardrobe.

Romantic style tops

As a romantic style personality, you will naturally be drawn to tops that feature some ruffle detail or draping. Your print of choice will be a beautiful floral rather than anything too graphic such as stripes or geometric shapes.

Just make sure that you include some plain tops in your closet too. Otherwise, you may find that while you have a lot of clothes, you don’t have a lot of outfit choices as there are many pieces which won’t go well with each other.

Romantic style jackets and coats

While it often feels natural to look for a coat in a darker hue such as black, you will instead find that your style personality is better suited to softer shades.

You could look for pinks to add interest to your closet as well as soft taupes or grays to ensure that you have enough neutrals in your wardrobe to balance out your outfits. You can look for jackets and coats which have draping, large collars and belted waists.

You will also like to feature texture in your coat selection. A Chanel-style jacket with a soft pattern and texture will be great to pair with jeans, for example, or choosing suede rather than leather will appeal to your desire for tactile textures. Or, you could choose a style that is traditionally thought of as giving a tougher, rock chick style look, and add a romantic element with embroidery or pearls.

Romantic style pants and jeans

You may wish to concentrate on your tops if you have a romantic style personality. For summer, you can then add white pants. For your jeans, you will probably prefer a soft shade such as a pale gray or white rather than the traditional blue denim.

You can also pair your plain tees with floral pants or jeans, which are bang-on-trend this season.

Romantic dresses and skirts

As a romantic style personality, you are likely to have more dresses and skirts in your closet than you do pants and jeans.

Again, you will be attracted to floral patterns in your dresses. For more formal occasions, you could look at textures such as lace.

The shape of your skirts will vary. You aren’t necessarily attracted to one shape over another. But, you will find that both pencil skirts and flared, or pleated, skirts suit your style personality.

You can wear a sweater with any of these skirts for spring and fall to ensure you can continue to wear them when summer is over.

You could also toughen up your romantic style a little by wearing a biker jacket and ankle booties. Adding the unexpected to your style is what makes it uniquely yours.

Check out these lace dresses from Rachel Parcell, Vince, Dress the Population and BerryGo that you can wear with this similar pair of sandals and handbag.

Romantic style accessories

Your accessories are likely to include a mix of pieces with plain colors and patterns. You could opt for a beautiful floral scarf or statement necklace.

For summer, a straw bag can add texture to your outfits, while you could add some ruffles to your clutch bag for evening.

You will still want a practical tote bag for day, but you are likely to be drawn to a slouchier shape rather than a structured bag. Or, you could mix elements of the glam style personality and choose a retro-style tote.

There can’t be a woman out there who hasn’t stood in front of her closet and thought “I have nothing to wear”. But, if you have the right wardrobe essentials in your closet, it doesn’t have to be that way for you.

If you have staple clothing pieces as the “foundation” of your wardrobe, you will always be able to create an outfit you love.

These staples will be different for each woman as we all have a different body type, style personality, lifestyle and preferences.

However, no matter what the right wardrobe basics are for you, you can then use these clothing essentials as the basis for a capsule wardrobe to make getting dressed stylishly a breeze. Take a look at the ultimate guide to creating a capsule wardrobe that works for you.

You may also want to check out our article on the most popular fashion pieces women over 40 couldn’t resist.

Use your wardrobe essentials to build your wardrobe!

A closet which you put together on a foundation of carefully selected pieces makes getting dressed every day so much easier.

So, where should you begin when it comes to selecting the essentials of your closet?

Below, I list 33 pieces that you can use as a starting point. As mentioned yours may be slightly different.

It’s worth investing more in your basics because these can form the backbone of your closet for many years to come. So, look for classic items which are good quality. Think about cost per wear rather than cost to purchase alone.

Clothing essentials: Your basic wardrobe

Once you have the essentials figured out, you can then “color them in” with hero pieces, more color and more accessories.  Having your essential pieces in place will make sure that you can always mix and match easily.

These are your basic wardrobe staples and the building blocks of your bigger wardrobe.

33 wardrobe essentials for WINTER and sPRING

This is a list of wardrobe essentials that we created for you. You can use this to create your own personalized list.

As most of you will be in winter and looking forward to spring, there are plenty of options which will work for these seasons. But you can easily adapt these essentials, no matter what the weather.

Read on for my 33 essentials as well as a capsule closet created with them. Don’t forget to let me know in the comments at the bottom of the article if you agree with me, or if you would add anything to my essentials list.

Wardrobe essentials – Tops

1. A white shirt

A white button down shirt offers endless outfit possibilities.

There are so many ways to wear it. You could team it with a pair of jeans, a blazer and ballet flats for a classic look, or wear under a sweater or a dress to give your outfit extra interest.

The white shirt from rag & bone features a high-low hemline, making it both timeless but also interesting.

2. Cashmere sweater

A cashmere sweater adds an instant feeling of luxury to even your most casual of outfits, making it perfect to add to your wardrobe essentials. Pair with jeans and ankle booties, or you could wear with a leather or pleated skirt for evening.

The cashmere sweater from Vince (below) is a true classic.

You could always wear the white shirt from above underneath it.

There are also great suggestions here from the 40+ Style Community on the best cashmere sweater brands to buy.

3. Silk shirt

Silk is another of those fabrics which adds instant luxury to your outfits.

You can expect to pay more for silk – but the beauty of it is that you can wear with absolutely everything for all occasions.

The silk blouse from Boden (below) comes in a choice of three colors and would look great worn with your favorite jeans.

4. Basic clothing – a solid color tee

It’s often advised to have a plain white tee in your closet. And, I don’t disagree that a white tee can be a hugely useful closet staple.

But, it doesn’t necessarily have to be white.

A tee in a solid color can provide a useful background to show off any statement jewelry that you have.

If, for example, you have a great red necklace, then opting for a blue, navy or a gray tee could allow you to show it off beautifully.

The COS T-shirt (below) features an on-trend boxy shape, and would look good dressed up or down.

Adaline @sdmomstyles above wears an easy, stylish, timeless look. You could always wear for colder wear with a pair of booties and a blazer if you need to add warmth.

5. Asymmetrical top

I’m a huge fan of asymmetry for all sorts of reasons.

Asymmetry can make a simple outfit look far more interesting. It can also help you to downplay the parts of your body you aren’t so keen on and play up what you do like.

The handkerchief hem top (below) from Amazon drapes well and would be a good option for wearing over leggings or skinny jeans. It is available in a vast array of colors and has plenty of positive reviews from women who say it is flowy and fabulous as well as having enough fabric to cover any “bumps and rolls”.

6. Black pants

Whether you wear them to work or you dress them up for evening, a classic pair of black pants will never go out of style.

This pair of BOSS wool trousers (below) has a classic wide-leg style which is particularly on-trend this year.

7. White pants

Just like black pants white pants should be a staple in your wardrobe. Other than black, no other color is as easy to combine and the extra benefit is that an outfit with a white base will look fresh and energetic.

You can still wear white pants for winter but you probably want to swap your sandals for a closed toe option like ankle booties!

Nora @jacketsociety above (read her style interview here) shows how you could wear white or cream pants in cooler weather.

Check out this similar sweater, cardigan, jeans, booties, clutch, scarf and sunglasses.

8. Dark denim jeans

Finding the perfect pair of jeans isn’t easy. But, I’d definitely advise you to make it a dark wash pair.

Not only do they work in a huge range of scenarios, but they’re also very flattering. Plus, they’re less likely to stain so, if you invest in a pair which are a little more expensive than the norm, they’re likely to last you longer.

A classic bootcut will suit most body shapes, but you could also opt for flared, cropped or skinny, depending on which style looks best on you.

The Wit & Wisdom bootcut jeans (below) will flatter most body shapes, and would look great paired with the silk shirt from #3.

9. LOUNGE PANTS

Lounge pants didn’t previously feature among my wardrobe essentials, but I decided it is definitely time to add them, given many of you will be spending more time at home than usual right now given new work from home arrangements – and will want to stay warm and comfy.

You could wear the Natori lounge pants (below) for a casual outing with sneakers, or just for relaxing at home. Or, of course, you could always add a smart top for virtual meetings if you are working from home.

10. A classic skirt

A classic skirt will mean different things for different women. But most women will suit the two classic styles. Choose either a pencil or an a-line to flatter your figure.

You could opt for a patterned skirt to wear with your plain tops, or a plain skirt to wear with your patterned tops. Or, of course, you could try out some pattern mixing.

This Kate Kasin skirt isn’t “classic” as you would expect because of the side tie detailing, but I’ve included it in my wardrobe essentials because it could be worn so many ways, and it comes in a huge choice of colors so you can choose one that will go best with the other items in your closet. Reviewers say it has a nice weight to it, and looks classy.

Wardrobe staples: Dresses

11. An evening dress for formal occasions

No matter whether you go out frequently, or hardly at all, everyone needs a dress that you can pull out of your closet at short notice for formal events, and know that it will look great.

A classic little black dress will see you through most events. You can add a silk wrap or some great jewelry to make it look different every time.

Choose a style to suit your body type. The black dress below from Maggy London features a flattering see-through top that adds a point of difference.

12. A wrap dress

A wrap dress is one of those wardrobe essentials that suits everyone, no matter what your body type.

The wrap dress defines your waist thanks to the waist tie and elongates your figure, thanks to the v-neck. It skims over your hips and thighs, making it a flattering option for pear shapes.

Not only that, but you can wear a wrap dress for pretty much any occasion. Depending on the fabric you choose, you could wear to work, to a casual lunch or to a formal event such as a wedding.

Many wrap dresses also have sleeves if you prefer a dress which covers your upper arms.

This faux wrap dress below has a flattering high-low hemline, and is perfect for any season. You could wear with tights and knee-high boots for winter, or with heeled sandals for summer.

For more options for dresses with sleeves, take a look at this article.

Outerwear

Of course, most of us don’t live in a climate warm enough year round to ensure that we never need to wear a jacket or a coat.

Not only that, but a layer of outerwear can add extra style to your outfits. Below are my essentials.

13. Leather or faux leather moto jacket

A leather moto jacket is a classic which exudes a certain rock star cool. This is one the go-to pieces of women who have a rock style personality.

You could wear on casual days with jeans and sneakers.

But, you can also use a moto jacket to toughen up, and add an unexpected element, to outfits such as a maxi dress, or a pleated midi skirt with a sweater and booties. In short, it pretty much goes with everything.

Not only that, but a leather jacket can actually get better with age, so you’re sure to keep it for many years if you choose a classic, fitted style.

You don’t have to choose classic black. You could opt for a lighter color which may be more flattering close to your face, and which you can also wear during spring and summer.

The Massimo Dutti jacket (below) would go beautifully with your jeans, or over your summer dresses so you can wear them year round.

14. Blazer

A blazer is another one of those pieces which is so versatile. Choose a timeless color or pattern and it will be something you will want to wear for many years.

You could add to your jeans with a tee and a pair of sneakers or heels to instantly elevate your outfit, or you can wear for a night out or for work.

You will want to opt for a style which nips in at the waist for the most flattering effect, unless you have a rectangular figure and you want to play up your androgynous figure with a boyfriend-style, looser fit.

An open style or single-breasted style like this one from Massimo Dutti is generally more flattering as double breasted blazers do have the potential to make you look wider.

15. Trench coat

There can be few pieces of outerwear which are as iconic as the trench coat.

Developed as an alternative to the heavy coats worn by soldiers in the First World War, a trench adds an instant touch of class to any outfit, even if you’re simply wearing jeans and a white shirt.

The shape itself is a classic and you could opt for the traditional beige shade or you could opt for a different color.

16. LONG CARDIGAN

A long cardigan is a fabulous transitional piece that you can wear instead of a coat when the weather starts to warm up.

Long cardigans, however, are not just for warmth. They can also be very useful for creating long, lean, flattering lines. Wear a block color underneath and then add your cardigan and you instantly look taller and slimmer.

17. Long sleeveless vest

A draped cardigan such as this one from Made by Johnny (below) is a versatile piece of outerwear that you can use to add interest, or to skim over the parts of your body you aren’t so keen on.

It is particularly useful for hiding a belly, or for elongating your figure if you are petite. Reviewers say this vest drapes beautifully.

18. Denim jacket

Jean jackets are always on trend because they exude an effortless sort of cool.

They’ve been worn by everyone from Marilyn Monroe to Madonna.

While over-sized, boxier denim jackets have been particularly on trend recently, a more fitted style like this jacket by Mavi Jeans (below) is generally more flattering.

You can swap your heavier coats for a denim jacket as winter starts to turn to spring.

19. warm coat

It goes without saying that you will want to stay cozy in the cooler months. Choose a warm coat that suits your lifestyle and style personality, like a casual puffer jacket.

20. A comfortable AND stylish pair of shoes for every day

Find a pair of shoes which you find both comfortable AND stylish which you can wear every day.

Depending on where you live and what your lifestyle is like, these will be different for different women.

These can be flat shoes of are have a small heel but you may want to consider a shoe with arch support.

One shoe style I often fall back on is to wear a pair of metallic color shoes. The FitFlop flat below are comfy but still add impact to your day-to-day outfits.

22. Heeled sandals (to go with everything)

There can be very few women who want to wear heels all of the time.

But, if you have a pair of heels in your closet, make it a versatile pair.

I believe a pair of block heels is a great option like this pair from Sam Edelman You could wear these sandals with everything from an evening dress to with a pair of jeans and a nice top for a more casual evening out. You could even mix casual with formal and wear with the lounge pants from above and a blazer.

You’ll find a block heel more comfortable than a regular stiletto heel.

23. Sneakers (in white, BLACK or metallic)

Thankfully, sneakers have never been more fashionable.

So, that means it’s easy to be both on trend AND comfortable, without having to suffer for fashion. I’ve never believed in the old “beauty is pain” adage.

If you choose a classic white, black or a metallic pair, then you should find they go with a lot of pieces in your closet.

24. Ankle booties (for transitional dressing)

One of the most useful pieces of footwear you can have in your closet, ankle booties can be worn throughout all the seasons. You could wear with your jeans, or with tights and a dress.

They can also add a little edge to outfits.

You can opt for flats or heeled depending on your preference. You can also choose booties to suit your style and weather, opting for closed or peep toes.

26. Classic leather belt

Not just for keeping your pants up! A leather belt can be used to create a different look and feel for your outfits.

You could belt around a dress, or you could cinch in the waist of a cardigan, for example, to show off your waist.

You may find that belting pieces that you have pushed to the back of your wardrobe, because you don’t feel they are flattering enough or that they have enough shape, could well give them new life.

27. Tote bag

Your tote bag should be large enough so that you can carry all of your day-to-day essentials around with you.

It should also be sturdy enough to ensure that it lasts, even if you use it everyday.

Opting for a classic leather style will add luxe to your outfit and give your tote longevity.

With everything on this list, it’s worth seeing your purchase as an investment, but this particularly holds true for your tote bag, like this one from Marc Jacobs (below).

28. Evening clutch

Of course, if you are heading out for the evening, then you won’t want to take your large daytime tote with you.

Choose an evening bag you can fit in what you need (phone, lipstick, credit card!) while not being too large to hold in your hand.

This clutch from Olga Berg should go beautifully with anything in your closet.

29. Silk or lightweight scarf

A scarf will allow you to add pizzazz to an otherwise fairly plain outfit.

Just think how much more stylish a simple pair of jeans and tee could look with the addition of a scarf.

Opting for lightweight scarf will bring extra luxury to your outfits during warmer months or choose a heavier option for winter. Choose a color which is flattering for your skin and hair tone.

This scarf from Nordstrom below comes in a soft cashmere that should feel wonderful against your skin. Plus, it is available in four different colors, including this autumnal cinnamon shade.

30. Statement necklace

Just as a scarf can really make an outfit, so too can a statement necklace.

Useful for adding extra style to outfits which could otherwise be a little boring, a statement necklace can also draw attention away from parts of your body you aren’t so keen on and up to your face.

Opt for a necklace to suit your individual style.

Wardrobe essentials

Of course, there are plenty of extra essentials you will need in your closet, such as pajamas and other underwear, but I’ve included the two essentials which will make your outfits look better and provide versatility to your closet.

32. A perfectly fitting bra

So many women are guilty of not having their bras correctly fitted, or of wearing the same old bras for years.

But, by making sure you have really well fitting bras, you will ensure that what you wear on top of them will look great.

Your bust will be supported and held in place where it should be. You definitely don’t want your bust meeting your tummy as that can make you look older than you really are.

The bra you will get most wear out of in your wardrobe will be a smooth t-shirt bra that you can’t see under your outfits. The Wacoal bra below comes in a huge choice of colors and larger sizes.

Wacoal Seamless Racerback Underwire Bra | 40plusstyle.com 40plusstyle.com

If you have larger breasts, there are some great recommendations here for the best bras for you.

33. Opaque tights or leggings

A pair of opaque tights or black leggings are your best friend when it comes to transitional dressing.

They give your outfits longevity which cuts across seasons and makes your closet a much more flexible place.

You could, for example, wear with your little black dress for a night out, or you could wear under a pencil skirt for work.

But, you could also wear with a floral summer dress and team this with your leather moto jacket to ensure you can wear your dress for spring.

If you choose control top tights or leggings, this could also help you to make sure you get smooth lines under your clothes.

When it comes to your style, do you want to add a little something extra to your everyday looks – a little bit of an edge maybe? Below you’ll find plenty of ideas to get an edgy style while still look like you?

So, what exactly is edgy?

First of all, exactly what defines an edgy style? What is edgy? Well, it’s really about being a little bolder with your look. However, what is edgy to one person may not be to another, so it’s very much a case of building on your personal style.

Let’s take a look at some ideas…

HOW TO get an edgy style

If you want to take a few risks with your style or be a little more daring with your looks then there are some easy ways you can add an edge.

add a tough material

Adding a touch of leather can be a quick way to add a little edginess to your outfit. You could add a leather jacket or choose leather pants or a leather skirt. While black is traditionally thought of as an “edgy” color, you could choose a softer shade to work for warmer weather and be more flattering to your skintone.

Choose a quirky style of shoes

Changing up your shoes or accessories is the easiest way to create different looks with your existing outfits. Deborah @deborahgates_ above (read her style interview here) wears an on-trend pair of peep-toe booties.

Looking out for shoes that are kind of a hybrid between shoes and boots can create an edgy look.

The sandals (below) are a little different from the norm, and would look good worn with your dresses, skirts and ankle pants.

Add an accessory you don’t usually wear

If you want to push yourself out of your comfort zone, then think about adding something you don’t usually wear day-to-day to your outfit. If you don’t usually wear a hat, then why not try one? A fedora style will add a little menswear inspiration to your look.

Lanzom Wide Brim Fedora Hat | 40plusstyle.com

Stack your jewelry

Edgy style - Mel layers her jewelry | 40plusstyle.com

As well as opting to add an accessory that may be a little outside your comfort zone, you could try wearing your jewelry in a different way. Layering your necklaces or rings is very on trend right now.

Mel @bagandaberet above (read her style interview here) shows how you can take something very classic and traditional – in this case pearls – and give it an edge by wearing it in a modern way.

Play with proportions

Don’t go for the obvious (mix formal and informal)

Edgy style - mixing formal and informal | 40plusstyle.com

If you think about women who have a style you admire, it’s likely that their style works because it isn’t obvious, and it isn’t top-to-toe in one particular style or theme.

By mixing formal elements with more casual pieces, you can definitely add an adge to your look.

Patricia @madamechicbcn (read her style interview here) mixes a casual pair of jeans with her more formal blazer. She also adds a pop of color with her bag and a pattern with her shoes. Her outfit comes together in a way which is unexpected yet coherent.

Try shopping a different brand

AllSaints could be a good store to browse as they tend to have edgier pieces that have an urban flair while still being flattering.

Change up your hair and make-up

Edgy style - how to give your outfits a bit of an edge: change your hair and make-up | 40plusstyle.com

A hair style in particular, or a refresh of your make-up can make a big difference to your overall style. When was the last time you changed your hair style? If it’s been a few years, perhaps it’s time to have a chat with your hairdresser. Maybe going shorter or embracing your natural gray could add an edge to your style. It could be something as simple as opting for a modern blunt cut rather than layers, for example?

You could also rethink your make-up. A bold lip shade can make a big impact to your everyday look or perhaps you could opt for a thicker brow to frame your face.

Judith @stylecrone above wears her natural gray hair in a modern, short, blunt style and adds a pop of red with her lipstick. She ups the drama of her outfit with an on-trend headband. (read her style interview and beauty interview)

In my article How to Define Style, I made an attempt at defining what style is. In this article let’s take a look at some of the things you can do to find your own personal style. If you’re thinking about how to find your style, below you will find 10 steps you can take.

What determines style?

‘Style’ is hard to define and I’ve made an attempt here, but I think we all know it when we see it. Jackie O is one example that stands out.

She developed her own unique style which was often clearly recognizable by her signature sunglasses.

How to find your style in 10 steps | 40plusstyle.com

One of the quotes that has defined style the best for me is this one from Gore Vidal: “Style is knowing who you are, what you want to say, and not giving a damn.”

Style is as much about knowing about yourself as well as knowing what you want to portray. If you are assured of this knowledge, other people’s opinions don’t really matter.

Create your own visual style quote | 40plusstyle.com

Have you found your own quotes that sum up style for you?

How to find that confidence in yourself and your style

Now that you’re thinking about style and what it means for you, let’s take a look at how you can really fine your own unique style.

1. Understand your body

How to find your style - Sylvia wears a green sweater | 40plusstyle.com

Knowledge is power. So the first thing you need to understand is what kind of body you have and what works for you. If you have a good understanding of your body shape and your strengths and weaknesses, you can buy the right clothes to either accentuate or camouflage them. At 40plusstyle.com we work with 5 horizontal body types:

You can identify your body type by going to this page and then follow the guidelines for your specific body type.

You may also like to identify your vertical body type.

Once you have discovered your body type, you can start thinking about the desired silhouette you want to create and create a balanced outfit.

Above I am wearing a sweater from MANGO. Check out this similar pants (another option here) and lace-up boots.

2. Understand your personality to find your style

Write down some words that describe your personality. How would you currently describe it? Do you feel that your style reflects your personality?

Have a look at various different styles. Which do appeal to you most?

If you still aren’t sure, you could take this fun style personality quiz and see your result.

3. Which colors inspire you?

How to find your style - Souri wears a red dress | 40plusstyle.com

Colours can also have a huge effect on your style and how you feel. Understand how certain colors make you feel. You may like to read my article on the psychology of color.

If you don’t use much color in your current style, you may start to experiment a bit by adding bits of colors through accessories and see how these make you feel.

Do you have a color you love to wear? You could create a capsule around it.

Souri @fabfemme_australia above (read her style interview here) looks beautiful in red.

Check out this floral dress (other options here and here) that you can wear with this similar pair of pumps and hat.

If you don’t want to add a color to your clothes, you could, for example, simply add a bright colored bag to your everyday outfits, such as the BOSS bag below.

Or, a brightly colored scarf like the Vince wrap (below).

4. Be critical of your current wardrobe

Be honest. Which garments in your closet do you REALLY like? How many of the garments have you not worn for a long time. How many were ‘mistakes’. Again, write down what didn’t work. Which clothes make you HAPPY?

Then donate or swap any items that you know don’t really work for you. They may be great pieces, but if they don’t suit YOU or your body type or create the silhouette you are after, you will not look stylish in them.  Have a look at my wardrobe editing series and create a wardrobe that you love!

5. Keep a scrapbook or pin the styles that inspire you

Whenever you see others wearing clothes you admire or like, try to get a picture and paste it in a note or scrapbook or pin it on Pinterest.

After a while, you will see a pattern developing of the kind of styles that you like. Take note of that and remind yourself about this style before going for the latest fashionable trend.

6. Make sure that every item you buy FITS you

How to find your style - Rita in a poncho and jeans | 40plusstyle.com

I’m sure this happened to you. You see an absolutely wonderful piece of clothing at a rock bottom price. It fits your body, style personality and creates a silhouette you like.

You try it on, but it’s just a little bit too short or too tight. You buy it anyway because the piece is so lovely and it’s cheap.

This is a big mistake. Any clothing that does not fit you properly will never look good on you.

So please be beware of sales and only buy new clothes when you really adore them and they fit you properly (or that you can easily alter to fit you).

Rita @ritapalazzi above (read her style interview here) turns up her jeans so she can show off her ankles.

Check out this similar poncho, jeans, pumps, handbag and sunglasses.

7. Keep a note book or diary of your outfits or take pictures

You may already pin images or make a scrapbook of clothes that inspire you, but when thinking about how to find your style, you should also try to really understand which clothes you actually wear make you feel GREAT!

If you felt wonderful on any particular day wearing a certain outfit, write it down. Or better even, take a picture.

I have found that taking pictures of myself is a great help in recognising which outfits worked and looked good and which ones didn’t. This will help you identify your style and prevent you from making buying mistakes.

To make the process easier, you could try a tripod so you don’t have to rely on others to take your photos for you.

8. Try to identify the components of your style and only follow the latest trends when they fit your style

True style defies fashion trends.

Although it is nice to add some trendy pieces each season, you should only go for the trends that suit you. Try to wait for a trend that suits you and then buy several pieces. You can check the latest trends here.

9. Make sure your wardrobe contains all the necessary basics for your style

If through all of the above you got a clearer sense of what you like and what suits you, you need to determine if you have the basic essentials necessary for your particular style.

These basics will be different for all of you. Go through your inspiration book and determine the absolutely necessary essentials for your style. Here is also what some style experts have to say about your wardrobe essentials.

10. Make your style extra special with the right statement pieces and accessories

How to find your style | 40plusstyle.com

Once you have covered the basics of your style, look for some wonderful statement pieces that are truly unique for you. Try to be creative and mix both high and low end brands together. Create something unique!

Accessories are easier to change and it’s also easier to be very creative with them. Invest in a good pair of shoes and choose the perfect hand bag for your style.

If you understand your style well, it may not be necessary at all to have many shoes or handbags.

Rather, you could focus on getting the perfect ones. One of these accessories may become part of your signature style. Something that uniquely defines you.

For example, if you like comfort but you still want to stand out from the crowd, you could choose a pair of patterned or textured sneakers.

More ideas to hone your own style

You already have 10 ideas to refine and elevate your style. Now, let’s take a look at a few more ways you can find inspiration and develop your own sense of style.

1. Choose your favorite pieces – and build your outfit around them

2. Take inspiration from celebrities

Jennifer Aniston, Michelle Obama, Sarah Jessica Parker

While you won’t want to copy anyone else, as this is all about developing your own individual style, you can definitely take inspiration from other stylish women.

Have a look at the style icons we have featured on the site.

If you love an outfit one of your favorite celebrities is wearing, why not take a look in your closet and see if you can emulate it in your own way.

3. Follow other stylish 40+ women

One problem when it comes to developing your style is imagining what a certain outfit will look like on you rather than on the 20-something model walking down the catwalk. Look at what other stylish 40+ women are wearing and how that might fit in with your own style. Take a look at @40plusstyle on Instagram, and the 40+Style Community on Facebook or check out the most stylish women over 40 on instagram.

4. Consider how you want to present yourself to the world

If you aren’t sure how to define your style, why don’t you think about it from another perspective. Rather than thinking about what to wear, think about how you want people to think about you. For example, do you want to look friendly? confident? interesting? How can you say that with your clothes?

5. Trust your instincts

Finally, trust your gut. If you’ve put together an outfit and it feels right and gives you confidence, you’ve hit upon a success!

I talked to you before about pursuing your best year ever

But how can you do that? What does it involve?

Not such an easy question to answer. Perhaps one month in Rome is a good start.

The idea I came up with is that I’d like to have a year (perhaps multiple?) of experiences. I’d like to meet new interesting people, experience new (and old favourite) places. I’d like to explore as much as possible but at a low speed.

One month in Rome - the river Tiber in Rome and one of the many roman bridges | 40plusstyle.com

Although I’ve really enjoyed the many road trips I’ve been doing in the past, the speed at which you travel is usually high. We hardly ever stay at one place more than a few days.

That’s great if you’re just interested in seeing the major tourist destinations but you also miss out on the all the special, more intimate details, that a new place has to offer.

One month in rome – Travelling slowly

When I visited New York for a whole month (and then again another time) I saw a whole new side of New York. I joined the locals for yoga class. I watched the people go by in Washington Park. I walked for hours like a New Yorker and visited local concerts. I truly got to experience what it was like to live like a new-worker. By the end of my stay I wanted to live there!

Walking beside the Tiber in Rome | 40plusstyle.com

I repeated this experience again for London where I had a similar experience. I got to discover all the hidden streets and the small special boutiques. I was able to wonder around the beautiful parks.

That’s the kind of magic that happens when you travel slow.

Video: what I packed for Rome

Is one month slow enough? I’m not sure. I remember reading the 4 hour workweek when it was first published in 2009. Tim Ferriss would travel and stay 3 months at one place. During that time, he would usually master one skill like dancing the tango in Buenos Aires or kickboxing in Thailand.

So perhaps 1 month is not enough and some places deserve even more time. Something I may consider for future trips. Inspired by that same book, I created an online business (the site you’re reading now!) that I can basically run from anywhere with only a few hours each week. The world is literally my oyster.

I’ve now also set up my home as an air B&B, so my travels can be partially funded through renting out my own house as well.

As for my outfit I went for casual chic on the day. At this time in Rome, you need to dress in layers as it can be all kinds of weather in one day. This day it was quite sunny, so I opted for a blouse with a lighter shirt jacket and jeans. As I was going to a park, I opted for my most comfortable walking shoes. Not the most stylish option perhaps, but certainly the most comfortable and safest (considering my fall 4 months ago).

will travelling and getting those experiences lead to your best year ever?

I’ve come to enjoy the little village of Luz in Portugal which is now my base. I mentioned to my husband that I will miss it. He suggested that he wouldn’t so much as he knows that he’ll return.

But I had just made a few friends, found a great yoga practise and even started a hip-hop class recently. And setting up new activities in a new town does take time. By the time, you’ve figured everything out, you need to leave again.

So we’ll see how it goes.

one month in rome – (Re)discovering Rome

At the moment, I’m definitely looking forward to discovering Rome. It’s a city I’ve visited a few times before as a tourist, but I’ve never stayed longer than one week. Since then I read a lot about Roman history (I highly recommend Colleen McCollough’s series: Masters of Rome) and am so much more knowledgeable of all the events that occurred here in the past, that I’d love to revisit all these places.

I’d like to experience what’s it’s like to sit on the Spanish steps regularly, to live like a Roman and to eat pasta on an almost daily basis.

Admiring Italian style in Rome | 40plusstyle.com

Admiring Italian style

I want to experience the Italian style again. I remember from my time in Bologna, some 30 years ago that I was so impressed with Italian style. In Bologna at the time, all the shops used to be closed on a Sunday but the shopping streets would be busier than ever.

The whole town came out to enjoy a REALLY slow stroll along these streets in their best clothes. The purpose was to see and be seen. It was a feast to eyes, and soon we would join the crowds as well. It’s called the Passeggiata and according to this article, this still happens.

Times have changed for sure and shops may now be open on Sunday. But I’m sure I’ll still experience lots of typical Italian style.

Will I fall in with Italy all over again? Or is Rome too different from Bologna?

I’ll do my best to record some of the style I spot here and report back to you. I’ll also show you what I packed in an upcoming article.

I hope to keep a record of both the good and the bad and want to record a few more videos on Instagram. Easier said than done as I usually prefer to just BE in the moment and recording a video for others takes you out of that.

But I’d also like a record for my own pleasure so I can remember what it feels like to embark on this new adventure and to capture these moments. If you’d like to follow along, follow me on Instagram.

I’ll keep your posted.

Here are some more choices, inspired by my travel look above. If you want to see some of my other outfits and what I brought to Rome, check out my article how to pack for Rome in November.

Jeans

Paige is my favorite jeans. Excellent quality, soft, flexible and long-lasting.

Tops

Stella Carakasi is my go-to for asymmetrical shirts and tops. This Stella Carakasi shirt is timeless and it’s now back in stock. Other tops I own and love are the New Mood top and the One to Watch sweater (I have it in the grey white version).

Walking shoes

If you’ll be walking a lot, I recommend bringing some dedicated walking shoes that can handle anything. I’m loving my Lowa walking boots.

Shirt Jackets

Shirtjackets are THE trend this season and they are ideal for transitional weather and packing for a holiday. I’ve brought several on my trip. I’ve got mine at Zara, but here are a few good ones I found at Nordstrom.

Have you ever thought of reinventing yourself or finally going after your dreams? In this article, let’s look at how to reinvent yourself after 40.

How to reinvent yourself after 40

So you’ve turned 40 or perhaps 50 or 60 or 70 and perhaps you have experienced this feeling of restlessness and unfulfillment.

I get it every 7 years or so; the 7 year itch!

Here’s what tends to happen.

You’re not quite happy where you are at this point of your life.

You may feel a bit stuck or perhaps a bit subdued.

You think back of a time when you had lots of hopes and dreams for yourself and now you find yourself at a certain age and many of these dreams are unfulfilled.

Or you’re in a job you don’t enjoy.

Or you’ve always wanted to travel more but you never seem to have the time nor the money.

Or you’re in a relationships that just doesn’t fulfill you.

Or you’ve never come to terms with your body and half the time you simply don’t feel confident or happy with yourself.

How to reinvent yourself - Life isn't about finding yourself, it's about creating yourself | quote | truepotentialacademy.com

It’s never too late to fulfill your dreams & reinvent yourself!

Whatever it is that you want to change, it’s not too late.

However, when you start to think about these dreams and are perhaps taking steps to fulfill them, all kinds of doubts enter your head.

How I’ve reinvented myself several times

I’ve become quite the expert of reinvention as I’ve reinvented myself various times throughout my life.

  • From a very insecure person who didn’t feel very worthy to a confident woman who knows she’s 100% worthy and is not afraid to show herself to the world
  • From working in a company to running my own company
  • From a service based business and creating websites for others to running my own website
  • From consumer of fashion to advising about fashion
  • From blogger and writer to true potential coach and podcaster

In addition I’ve lived in 7 countries and being and living in each is itself a way of reinventing as every place is just so different.

Then of course this year I’m going to mostly travel instead of living at one place for most of the year.

If you like to read my full reinvention story, read my article on how I became a true potential coach.

I have no doubt that I’ll continue to reinvent myself as I get older.

Doubts you may have that stop you from reinventing yourself

Perhaps you have wanted to reinvent yourself or your life in some way, but you feel it’s too late to realize your dreams.

“I should have done this earlier”.

I can’t do it.

Perhaps you feel doubt about your ability to change or to achieve your goal.

You may feel stuck.

You may feel that family, your house or other circumstances lock you in and it’s impossible to get out.

You’re scared ahead of time.

Top obstacles for getting the life you want

In a survey I conducted recently, these came out as the top reasons you haven’t achieved your goals yet:

  1. Discipline: you procrastinate or aren’t motivated enough
  2. Confidence: you don’t feel confident that you can do it
  3. Time: you don’t feel there’s enough time to do what you want
  4. Lack of clarity: you’re not exactly sure what you want to do so you don’t do anything
  5. Fear: you’re too scared to fail
  6. Other people: your care of other people gets in the way or you care too much about the opinions of others which stops you from acting
  7. Health: you feel your health prevents you from achieving it
  8. Money: you don’t feel you have enough money to achieve it
  9. Age: you think you’re too old

The bottom line is this: changing just feels too uncomfortable.

But here is the good and the bad news:

Being uncomfortable is part of reinventing yourself

Should you really change?

But Sylvia, you may wonder, “why should I change? Life is good in many ways and you feel comfortable in it.”

Just thinking about your dreams makes you feel uncomfortable, so you’d rather not think about them. Much better just to enjoy yourself and watch Netflix right?

But then, deep inside, that thought keeps lingering.

I want more, I’m capable of more.

I still have many more years in this beautiful life. I want to experience more of it and travel.

I don’t feel I’ve tapped into my full potential yet.

I think that we have a natural desire to grow in some way. This desire will be stronger in some than it is in others.

But when thoughts of longing come up or you find yourself saying ‘should’ a few too many times, you probably have feelings of unfulfilment.

You may have become good at suppressing these feelings though. That’s because every time you started thinking about what you want, you started to feel uncomfortable and anxious.

Because you know that when you go after your desires, you’ll have to do something that’s unfamiliar. That scares you a bit.

And the primitive brain doesn’t like to do new things that are unfamiliar.

That’s why, when you honor those feelings of unfulfillment and want to do something about it, you need to get comfortable with discomfort.

Also find more on this in my article on how to build self confidence

The good news is: discomfort is just a sensation in your body. You can cope with a sensation in your body and I’ll teach you how to do it!

How to reinvent yourself - Whenever you feel moments of discomfort that means that true change is happening to you | truepotentialacademy.com

How to reinvent yourself: Let’s look again at some things that you want

Hare are just a few responses from a recent survey I did:

I want to know what I want to do. I need clarity!

I’ve always been there to serve others but have never stood still long enough to understand what’s important to myself.

I want more freedom and travel more.

I want a new house by the sea.

I want to accept my body and be confident with who I am.

I want to get healthy again and stop eating too much.

I want to make more money doing something I love.

I want to be in a relationship that inspires me.

I want to get out of my shell, go out more and make new friends.

No matter what it is that you want, you can make a choice to go and get it!

Why do we want what we want?

The answer is usually that we want to feel a certain way.

You want to feel happier.

You want life to be easier.

You want to feel loved.

You think that life will be 10x better once you’ve accomplished your new goal.

But then when you start the process of reinvention, you may start to feel uncomfortable (because new things always feel uncomfortable).

You may start to second guess yourself:

Hey, I wanted to feel better and happier! But instead I feel all this discomfort. This is not what I signed up for! Let’s get comfortable again.

You need to be very aware when this happens, because bofore you know it, you may slip into old habits again.

But also know this: life is 50 – 50

Discomfort is definitely part of growth.

But even if you succeed in achieving you goal, you will not feel happy all the time.

Life is 50-50. There are always going to be things that will make you feel uncomfortable.

There will always be challenges.

The beauty is that they may be different challenges from what you had before.

For example the new challenge may be: how am I going to manage all these new customers , rather than how am I going to get my first customer.

But no matter where you are, there will always be moments where life just sucks a bit. When you know this, you can just accept those moments and feel them.

And then proceed with all your big plans!

So if I will not get the happiness and comfort as a reward, why reinvent myself then?

Here is why it’s so worth it.

You will get SO much more satisfaction from achieving one of your goals than watching your favorite Netflix movie.

You’ll learn so much in the process too.

You’ll get stronger, braver, more confident, may have more money to spend and more free time to spend as you wish.

Not initially perhaps, but over time.

How I reinvented myself time and time again

For example when I think of myself, my life is VERY different from what it was 20 years ago. Or even 10 years ago.

20 years ago, I was at a complete loss, very low on self esteem and had no idea what I wanted to do with my life.

Now, I feel so much more confident, so much more freedom, I developed so many more skills, which is all because I decided to go outside my comfort zone and try something new.

I’m not happy all the time, but I always have compassion for myself.

I don’t like every single task I have to do in my business, but at least I’m my own boss and don’t have to answer to anyone.

The bottom line is, I’m more confident, have more money, have a business I love that allows me to travel and have friends that inspire me.

At the same time, I’m still happily married and have a son who is now studying in Australia. Going after your dreams and fulfilling your personal needs doesn’t have to come at the expense of your family and friends!

I still have lots of plans and feel that the best years of my life are still ahead of me.

Reinventing myself after 40 | truepotentialacademy.com

How do you start with reinventing yourself?

The process of reinventing yourself can be summarized in 3 steps

#1 Become aware of what you want and why you don’t have it yet

This first step is a really important one.

You need to become aware of what it is you want exactly and why you don’t have it yet.

The reasons you haven’t gone after your dreams yet, can be any of the reasons mentioned above. It can be lack of time, lack of confidence, too much procrastination etc. But it’s important to dig deeper.

Why are you not making time for it?

Why do you procrastinate?

Why are you fearful?

Is it really something to be fearful about?

I help my clients get really clear on this with the True Potential Formula I created.

Using this formula is a really effective way to discover the real obstacles. More often than not they are created by your thoughts.

You believe you don’t have the capability to start that new business which is why you are fearful.

You believe that you can’t lose the weight because you’ve never been able to do it in the past, which is why you don’t feel confident and don’t even start.

The True Potential Formula really helps you become fully aware of what you want and all the reasons you’re stuck.

It’s only when you become aware of what you want and what’s holding you back that you can make progress towards achieving your goals.

If you need some inspiration I have created two very helpful guides to get you started: The Reinvention Guide + the Bucket List Guide.

You can get both by clicking here.

#2 Practice believing new things about yourself

Once you become aware of what you want and how you’re creating the life that you have right now, you need to start believing that change is possible for you.

You need to practice new thoughts.

You need to learn how to manage thoughts and feelings and urges so you’re not reactive in your day-to-day but are ACTIVELY working on your goals.

For example, many of you give lack of time as a reason that you can’t achieve your goals, which is mostly caused by a belief that you either don’t have any time or that you’re not a very organised person.

You’ll learn to question these beliefs and also learn a completely new system to manage your time.

#3 Take lots of action

Once you know what you want and understand what you need to do for the next step, you will be able to take the needed action.

You will do whatever it takes and are not afraid to fail to get towards your goals. You realize that each ‘failure’ will just get you closer towards your dreams.

How do you want to reinvent yourself?

Here are just some ideas on the different ways you can reinvent yourself after 40 in various parts of your life!

Reinvent your Style

#1 Change your mindset on what you can and cannot wear

Do you have the feeling that now that you have a certain age, you cannot wear certain things?

Perhaps it’s time to challenge those ideas. There truly is no limit to what you can wear after 40 and look amazing.

The key is that you need to wear what you love with confidence.

You may like to read my article on how to get out of a style rut which dives deeper into your excuses and why I don’t accept them.

#2 Wear colors that you have never worn before

We tend to get stuck in a rut when it comes to colors. Start playing with new combinations.

Check out our color guides for inspiration.

#3 Play with different styles

Do you know your style personality? Finding out may give you some ideas on what kind of style you like.

You can take our style personality quiz.

How to reinvent yourself - Style Personality Quiz | 40plusstyle.com

Although we may gravitate to one style personality, we often incorporate elements of several.

Have fun playing with different ideas and styles!

#4 Get a new haircut

The difference of a new haircut should not be underestimated.

A haircut that suits your face shape and your style personality can make the difference between you looking drab and old and modern, vibrant and hip. It’s worth the investment!

#5 Add a bit of makeup

Makeup is another area where just a little bit of color can make a huge difference.

Do you always stick to neutrals, try a brighter color.

Have you never worn eye shadow or tried a smokey eye, give it a try and see how it makes you feel.

Reinvent Your Lifestyle

#6 Start a new hobby

How to reinvent yourself after 40 - 40plusstyle.com

Has your life become a bit stale and without excitement?

Why not try taking up a new hobby or learn a new skill?

Have you always wanted to do something creative, take a class! If you love photography then why not start learning how to create these yourself?

Once you find something that you love and can pour a lot of your energy in, you feel energized and alive.

The extra benefit is that you will often meet a lot of new interesting people too (both on or offline).

#7 Do something scary, like going on a trip by yourself or with a friend

Are there things you have always wanted to do but you are just too scared to do them?

Perhaps it’s going to a restaurant by yourself?

Or booking a trip for one?

It’s never too late to push boundaries and if there are things on your bucket list that you would like to do but cannot find others to do those with, try to do them by yourself.

Travel is a good example.

How to reinvent yourself over 40 | 40plusstyle.com

Don’t wait before others will join but take the leap yourself.

You can start training yourself to do something that feels just a little bit scary every day.

One year from now, you you will find yourself doing things you never thought you would be able to.

Career & Business

#8 Go back to work

Are you a stay-at-home mum or empty nester that would like a new challenge?

There are lots of opportunities on and offline to get back to work. Many of these new jobs didn’t even exist 10 years ago.

Here are just a few of the kind of freelancers I have hired in my business:

  • Community manager
  • Copy writer
  • Ads manager
  • Writer
  • Style advisor
  • Graphic designer
  • web Developer

Sites like upwork.com make it easy for anyone with a skill to bid for projects at any time.

Don’t have the desired skills yet? Train yourself in one of the many online courses.

#9 Start a business

It’s never been easier to start a business.

You can set yourself up as a freelancer and offer your services on sites like Upwork.

Or you can start a blog and turn it into a business as I have done.

The best thing is that you can start an online business even when you are still in a permanent job.

Even as little as 15 min a day can make a huge difference towards achieving the dream of starting your own business.

Health and Wellness

#10 Stop buffering with bad habits

Many of us don’t like to deal with uncomfortable feelings. That could just be that nagging feeling that you’re not fulfilling your full potential. So what do we do? We buffer.

We avoid feeling those feeling and instead start eating too much, drinking too much, buying too much, facebooking too much or watching too much TV.

When you buffer too much you are taking away time from the tasks that are important to reach your goals. It stops you from achieving your long-term goals.

You may also be sacrificing your health which will also prevent you from reaching those goals.

#11 Get fit and strong

When I recently did a survey on what you want, this was the option that was ticked most.

It’s so important to stay strong and fit as we get older. But we often have so many other things to do, that we forget that this is our highest priority.

Set yourself a goal to do daily or weekly exercize, plan food in advance and eat healthy and quit sugar.

My secret weapon: 85% dark chocolate. It has almost completely eliminated my desire for sugar and has helped my menopausal tummy weight!

I have also hired a personal trainer that helps me with my workouts every week. He keeps me accountable.

Here are some other tools I use.

Relationships & family

#12 Make some new friends

It’s true that making new friends after your forties can be tough. Most people already have their set circle of friends.

But there are still lots of opportunities to meet new people.

  • Join an education class
  • Start a new hobby
  • Organise a meetup
  • Connect in local facebook groups
  • Become active for a cause you believe in
  • Do volunteer work

Getting new friends takes commitment and time but the investment of both can be so worth it.

There are so many more ideas!

These ideas are just the tip of the iceberg of what’s possible.

The truth is: it’s never too late to reinvent yourself and create the life you want for yourself.

Even if you don’t quite believe it.

It starts by taking small steps and perhaps spend 15 minutes a day on what you want to change.

We all have 15 minutes per day spare, so start using them wisely. In fact all of us have the same 24 hours in a day. It’s up to you to decide what to do with them.

Do you know what you really, REALLY want?

Sometimes, you find it hard to change, because you don’t know what you want yet.
