Avoid slouchy bags and cross-body bags.

I would never wear anything double-breasted, so just try finding a nice spring/fall/raincoat – I’m looking at a sea of double-breasted trenches! Would love to see any recs for any that you stumble across.

Judging by the popularity of this post, I’m not the only one. More hourglass recommendations, please!

Hi Michelle, I’m an hourglass too and also over 40. I have found that as Sylvia has written above, bootcut styles are truly the most flattering.

They taper slightly from the hip to the knee and then flare out a bit again towards the hem. This is the most flattering because the taper at the knee helps avoid both bulk and added heaviness to the legs – especially important for many hourglass shapes who have wider thighs. Having the flare adding width at the hem helps balance the overall silhouette with the width of the hips and bust.

When I look at the article above and see Erika’s teal trousers or Nikki’s jeans in the photos, I imagine how much better both of them would look in a boot cut. I would have the inseam tailored to take them in from (just below) crotch to knee and then back out to the original hem width.

To emphasize your waist and lovely shape, look for something with a rise that sits close to your natural waist, depending upon your secondary shape characteristics. Look for good fit in the hips, seat, and thighs. You will likely have to belt them, since the waist will probably be a bit large – most jeans are cut for straighter figures. This can be flattering with a tucked-in, closer-fitting (non-baggy) shirt.

Choosing a lower-rise style will fit your hips better but will not flatter your shape as much. This may be fine if you are wearing a shirt that is not tucked in (like the peplum and wrap styles pictured in the article) or you are wearing a jacket over your jeans. As Sylvia says, it’s all about choosing what you want to emphasize!

No matter what, choose a denim that has some elastane/spandex in it for stretch and comfort. Denim is being made in a much wider array of fiber content these days, creating a lot of variety in the feel of the fabrics!

Fortunately for you, right now, in 2023, fashion is cycling out of the highly-tapered, skinny-jeans obsession and we are seeing more boot cuts again (though they never disappeared entirely). Higher waists have been the trend as well, so you should have an easy time finding what you need.

I don’t know if this link is allowed, but check these out, in Reg, Petite, and Tall, on sale for $24.

Hi Robin, you’re fortunate that your bodacious backside is on-trend at the moment. A flattie like me is always envious of your beautiful backside curves! I hope you try to celebrate what you have. Remember that there is always someone on the flipside wishing for what you have even if you wish you didn’t. I love peplums because they help hide my belly and can give me a bit in the back to balance out my bust so I don’t look like a letter P (or worse, B!) from the side!

I have just been on calculator. net. With my measurements I received I am a bottom hourglass. Do I still look to what an hourglass figure should wear or are there other things I need to look into please?

There are hourglass women of all sizes and for many flat lace shoes are fine. Although I have provided some general guidelines for shoes I don’t think it makes a huge difference to the overall outfit. Focus on silhouette is always more important in my opinion.

Which one is correct?

You should totally try a miravle cami/fake camisole when the neckline is too low. Allows you to wear almost any low cut top without extra layering.

Focus on the parts you want to highlight, then follow the guidelines for that. For example if you want to wear clothes that lengthen you and make you look slimmer follow these guidelines https://40plusstyle.com/how-to-look-taller-and-slimmer/ More tips can also be found athttps://40plusstyle.com/how-to-hide-your-belly/

I’m at a loss as to what shape I am now. I’ve always been hourglass-to-pear, no matter what weight/size…but in the last few years I put on a *lot* of weight, and for the first time ever I’ve got a stomach. I’m 5’2.5″. Way back when, at 110 lbs, I was a 32C (a D now, it seems), with a 22″ waist and 35″ hips (0-2P to regular). My natural settling point was probably in the 130-140 range, which put me at the 6-8 P and R) range in most lines. I am now a 34DDD, size 10 – 14 (mostly regular/short regular), am about 10″ larger on waist and hips than at my smallest. I’d figured out how to dress at my curvy 130-140 (wrap dresses, bootcut pants, v-necks, deep scoops, heels almost always, often quite high, form-fitting tees, patterns on top and simpler below …. But now, I’ve put on 25-30 pounds, grew a very soft stomach, have thick upper arms, and the thick thighs and behind I mourned 30 years ago before they were fashionable are now not even in the top 10 on the list of things to figure out how to flatter, and my body feels like a completely unknown thing. Long way of asking: how to dress for curvy when you no longer have the dramatic definition and (waist/belly) delineation that felt like a saving grace before a dramatic weight gain? I’d lije to say I’m getting the weight off, but right now I need to be able to dress for the short curvy soft body I currently have!
